I found EE as an attractive career to study as I was going through community college. It was always cool talking with my classmates about the concepts of electricity, electromagnetism, and power. I’m currently on my last year towards a B.S in EE, and I have reaffirmed my passion for this field. If I were to choose my favorite subfield on EE it would be Control Systems and Power Electronics.

So, electrical engineering is just a thing in college because when we get a job we will end up in embedded systems, power systems, RF, DSP, Electronics? What I'm trying to ask is this: is electrical engineering just a name that encompasses all those subfields? That would have a lot of sense because I have always heard people say "I'm working for XYZ as Electronics engineer, I have B. S. In electrical engineering" and stuff like that.

Thanks for asking! Good question. There are actually plenty of jobs with the title "Electrical Engineer" in which the Engineer will deal with general EE stuff like creating schematics and board layouts, and could be dealing with mixed-signal circuits and/or high power circuits or even just novel frequency and power circuitry. So those jobs do exist. Although yes, all that you've listed are under the "Electrical Engineer" umbrella. The engineer writing this is an RF engineer and I got my B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Most all of what I learned as an EE applies to this job in one way or another. For a little more context, in my degree I specialized in RF because that is what I found the most interesting, but I could've done power, IC design, DSP, etc. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Just to give my experience: It depends on company to company, if you're into Government sector, then mostly the subfield would be Power Engineering whereas if entered in Private, then it would shift towards Power Electronics, Control System, Embedded etc.

How can I decide between electrical engineering and computer science? I have been doing so much research on both fields for almost a year now, and from what I've learned computer science is about algorithms, logic, data structures, programming, and computation, while electrical engineering focuses on the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. I think electrical engineering sounds more interesting, especially since I really like physics. I have been learning some python and it is fun to. I am afraid of there not being as many opportunities in EE compared to CS... I know it seems crazy to think I won't find a job in EE, but sources such as BLS.gov and other articles show little growth and opportunity for the future. I am interested in all the fields of EE; power, telecommunications, controls, electronics, etc. While I do think that fields of CS are interesting as well, such as AI, cybersecurity, software development, and networking, I honestly don't think I can say that they seem as interesting as those in EE. I am mostly just concerned about finding employment. I know that there is some overlap between the two as well. I like robotics which both can work on, but I do think the complex/complicated hardware is just cooler to work with. I still love programming though, and I respect it a lot! I just don't know...

Great question. We can make a video on this exact topic! Expect it in the next couple weeks. In short, computer science is 100% working on your computer. Electrical and computer engineering you will be dealing with hardware, i.e. physical circuit boards and circuit devices, along with a lot of computer work. If you enjoy working in a lab and with physical things you can hold and enjoy physics - EE/CE might be the one for you. On the other hand, if you’re less interested in that side and are in love with producing efficient code and algorithms, CS could be for you. Last note, a lot of EEs go on to become programmers but it’s much harder to be a programmer that turns to EE. Ask any more questions here if you have them! :-)

@@EngineeringInsiders Omg thank you for replying!! I'm so happy you gave this answer! I do really love physics and physical things oh so much, so I will definitely likely do EE. Thank you so much! I really love your videos because they talk about engineering in a fun way, with fun animations, excellent points, and great organization. Very few other channels do this if you look, unlike CS where there is information everywhere haha. So thank you again!!! EDIT: I think the future of EE is still good, despite what sources and people may say. Electric vehicles and other sustainable energy/power solutions seem to be rising. I won't let that dissuade me. I also hear that a lot; that EEs can become programmers, but it's difficult the other way around, so I'd love having those options as well. Thank you sooo much. Could you also talk about the math in engineering, and what ways we can improve our math skills? You are the best, honestly.

Yes if you enjoy physics and the physical side of things EE could be a great fit. Also you should know whatever you choose is not the end-all, you’re absolutely allowed to change your mind and a ton of people (many on our team) have changed their minds mid-degree. Just follow your passion! It will all work out in the end. Yeah EE jobs are not going anywhere - do not worry about the noise, EE in the industry typing this. We are so glad you said those nice things because that is exactly the purpose of this channel. Thank you so much! Of course! We’d love to make a “math in engineering” video.
