In this video, we'll go over some considerations and options for hooking up, or not hooking up a second router to your network. We will go over what this means, and you should be able to decide if this is something you want to do.
What this video is not, is a step by step guide on how to do it.

After seeing this, I were going to do this to my homeserver, just because it's easy, and I now rent an apartment. But, strangely enough, my pretty fancy router router that is a couple of years (AC 1750), had only 100 Mbps lan and not 1Gbps. So it was actually faster to keep on using an really old extender (get 144Mbps with that)... Will try to route a cable through the wall, without the owner noticing it when I have to move in 2 years time.. Thanks for the idea though.

I see the Rock Space AC2100 router in your video, and I'm considering it, what do you think of this router especially in term of range coverage and performance notably of the 5Ghz band? Which is better between this router and the Tenda RX2 Pro AX1800? Thanks

First let me start off I really liked the video a lot even though I know a good amount about networking I have never had to set up a 2 router system. I just had one question I have been able to find a ton of tutorials about LAN - LAN connections but almost nothing about LAN - WAN connections and I really wanted to got that rout I just don't know what configuring if any is needed for the second router? Or would it be the same kind of configuring that the LAN - LAN uses with changing DHCP settings. Thanks again on the great video.

I’m trying to understand all this lol I usually do a ton of research but I was on a time limit so we hooked up a second router via Ethernet cable. When I setup the second router it created a separate network name and password. It took 2 minutes and it was done. Everything seems to be working fine. Is this going to cause issues? Slow one or both down? Create interference? I really didn’t expect it to be that easy and work right away with no issues lol

Like he said, if you’re looking to expand your wireless network, get an Access Point. Otherwise, use a switch for hardwired connections. It’s often cheaper and easier to do and because you are using dedicated devices that are purpose built, rather than using a Jack of all trades, like a home router.

I would like to have wireless access in my camper in the backyard. My home wireless router does not reach it. I have an ethernet cable going from the house to the camper. Would an access point accommodate multiple devices or would a wireless router be better? My wife works remotely in the camper and my child does online learning. Would an access point be able to handle that as well?

I have two of the same router and connecting to the same network. One router (main) is located in my house. The second router is located to another house. (40 feet away) Would I use the LAN to WAN to separate the two? Will this give me the option to create two SSID? and am I correct to assume that I will have control over both configuration of both router? I will provide the password to the tenant to connect. Is there any concerns of this hook up?

Hi, I was wondering if you had any ideas on this issue. I have a nighthawk 6600 AX wifi 6 router connected to my frontier cable modem. I purchased an MSI Radix 6600 AXE wifi 6E router and a Ubit wifi 6E 5400 mbps wifi card. I installed the wifi card into my system and disabled the onboard wifi. I plugged the 6E router into an Ethernet port of the 6 router. The 2.4 and 5 channels show up but the 6E does not. I tried to connect the 6E router directly to the cable modem and that didn’t change anything. Not sure if what to do. I downloaded the wifi card drivers from Intel and that didn’t do anything. I would like to have clear and concise instructions, how to add a second router to an existing network, and do it wirelessly. Also my main question I can’t find anywhere, if my second router is a better router than my first router, would I get the full potential out of the second router? Or no since the first main router isn’t as good as the first? Any advice is appreciated, Thank you!

or you have an older modem/router and you want to update to a Wifi 6 router. Instead of buying too much equipment, set the modem/ router in bridge mode effectively make it a simple modem, and attach your shining new Wifi 6 router to this modem (your old modem/ router), that would work very nicely, wouldn't it? and you can make them talk to each other either through a cable or wirelessly

Maybe I missed something, but I just need to know if I can buy a wifi 6 router and connect it to my current wifi 5 router modem combo. I'm trying to upgrade my home network. Configuring is fine and understood, but my combo doesn't have a WAN port or maybe they're all WAN ports and the new router has a specific WAN port? I'm starting to notice my connected devices taking turns or randomly disconnect, which may just be my ISPs fault, but I hear wifi 6 is more stable for multiple connected devices, also I'm into wireless VR gaming and I aim to reduce latency as much as I can.
@BudgetNerd
@BudgetNerd Жыл бұрын
If your combo modem/router is from your ISP, they should be able to put it in bridge mode/disable the router functions if you ask them. Then your ISP should be able to tell how to hook up your own router. Also, your ISP might be able to provide a newer combo unit that supports WiFi 6. A combo unit may not have a WAN port, because it wouldn't be needed. But your new WiFi 6 router would have one.

I note that this video was made of the back of your review of the rock space RSD0614 router. The thing is, it still doesn’t answer the question if this router will work as a wireless, WDS Wi-Fi extender. Wi-Fi extenders simply have that function and many are pretty useless at doing that, whereas a router has many functions and can be the favourite choice for someone who is not technically challenged but nonetheless is not a nerd. Thus many people want a router to act as a Wi-Fi extender but without having a cable trailing from the main router to the extender router. In your previous video you showed the Wi-Fi set up page for the RDS0614 but you didn’t say if the router supports WDS at all or in the same way as many older TP Link routers did by simply pressing the WDS option, surveying the available networks and so on. When looking for a router which can also act as a completely wireless extender there is surprisingly little information given by the vendors or the makers. I get why; they want to sell you their extender but as I said they have limited functions. So I’m sure many people would appreciate an answer to the above mentioned question for the rock space router and many others out there on the market. Best regards, David Shaw.

If the second router is good enough, you could just swap out the whole router rather than use two. Using two router complicates things. If you don't want to swap routers, you could add an access point, instead of a second router. If you don't want to add/buy an access point, or swap routers, you could add another router, but you may need to do some configuring on both to make it work.

Buy an access point and set it up upstairs to supplement your wireless. It's the easiest way to go. Adding a second router can work, depending on what you want to do, and how knowledgeable you are at configuring them.

Did this topic come up because of how the older routers from 10 years ago had a 2 in 1 system, and then the recent technology got better? Our old router from like 10 years ago had a router that connected to the city's network with the coaxial cable. Then it sent a line to a sort of sub-router modem. And without the sub-router modem box the whole thing couldn't work. But the second box wasn't built very well and has issues. A lot of the old 2 in 1 router systems couldn't work without both boxes. So if 1 of the boxes fails, will a 2nd router like you are suggesting work to replace & compensate 1 of the boxes in the 2 in1 system boxes failing to make the 2 in 1 setup still work? Plus, a few cities are doing scams now where they want you to RENT your routers instead of owning them. This is basically a scam and creates incentive for people to fix older routers rather than replace them. You wouldn't rent your fridge or your stove, or your microwave, or your own driveway space from the city. This is overreach by cities and should be punished.

So much for a nerd. Just further confuse people. You only need ONE router. You can add extra switches or Access Points (WiFi), which is what most people mean. Now, you can connect a router to another router, but if you don’t know what you are doing, you will doble-NAT and certain applications may not work.

A 2nd router could work, especially if it's just internet your dad is needing.. but keep in mind adding a second router could create more configuring to get it to work. Depending on the router, of course. Otherwise, you'd want to hook up a switch and access point where your dad is, that would be ideal... But of course it can cost a bit more money.
