Endless Night! I think it is super underrated among fans but I like it because there is no detective so it's a brand new experience. Pure mystery with enjoyable plot! It starts slow though so it takes a bit getting used to! Other than this one I think my favorite is Sad Cypress

Christie is my favorite author. I’m on a steady track to read all of her works by reading 1 per month. There is a Tide is one of my favorites that I haven’t heard anyone talk about. Just finished Cards on the Table and loved it. My favorite Marple books so far are Body in the Library (the first chapter I found hilarious!!), and A Murder is Announced.

My first was Morder on the orient express and I’ve read over 50 of her novels by now. I’m a huge fan and especially enjoy the Poirot stories. Every book is Christie and also different. My favorite is the Morder of … Ackroid (in german its just called Alibi), followed by the ABC murders.

Great video. Thank you for the suggestions. And Then There Were None is indeed her masterpiece, I think. But I still have much to read. Roger Ackroyd’s twist genuinely blew my mind - so simple and “obvious”, but so genius. And I actually think Orient Express, although spoiled now through its many adaptations (1974 being the best, IMO), is perhaps the most innovative, subversive, and unpredictable (even poignant) solution to a murder mystery ever formulated. Curtain is also amazing that way. But I have yet to really dive into Miss Marple’s stories…looking forward to it!

I've only read a little bit of Miss Marple up to now (Thirteen Problems, The Murder at the Vicarage, The Body in the Library) and I liked them. Mystery isn't my go-to genre but I plan to pick up more of her novels in the future, just having the eternal problem of "too many books and too little time" 😂 You certainly peaked my interest with this Mr. Quin book.

For the standalones, I would add Death comes as the end (the one set in Ancient Egypt) and Pale Horse. I think the best MM is A murder is announced. It's also considered as one of the best AC books. Caribbean is nice but she didn't take advantage of the setting; that story could take place anywhere. As for the Poirot stories, I would go for ABC murders, Peril at End House and Five Little Pigs.

The fact that Agatha Christie started to loathe Hercule Poirot herself might have something to do with that fact, I guess?
@sciagurrato1831
@sciagurrato1831 10 ай бұрын
Many would disagree. Poirot has its lows but its highs are higher than Marple - and there are many more highs. And in Poirot there is a “team concept” - so the books are richer in humor, darker in the shadows, and more characterful. Poirot’s demise is far above any of the Marples in terms of human understanding. And puts the lie to the throwaway comment by Christie that she couldn’t stand Poirot. Like Conan Doyle saying he couldn’t stand Holmes.
@cafeaulivre
@cafeaulivre 10 ай бұрын
@@sciagurrato1831 Conan Doyle absolutely hated Holmes because he felt the detective overshadowed his other literary work which he thought was better. The reason why Holmes supposedly died at Reichenbach falls was because Conan Doyle refused to write anymore Holmes. He kept refusing for quite a while, despite the huge protest from fans and the financial backlash for The Strand Magazine. In the end, he caved to the fans, but only begrudgingly so.
@sciagurrato1831
@sciagurrato1831 10 ай бұрын
@@cafeaulivre that’s the conventional storyline but the human psyche is more complex than that. If you believe a writer can “hate” his creative works, then you’re probably conflating a number of variables. In Conan Doyle’s case, he failed at writing something that the rest of the world welcomed….to this day, few read CD’s “serious” works. So CD underneath it realized he didn’t have the talent he aspired to…and that could be disappointing. However, the care which he invested in the detail - nay, the very life of SH - of the stories is testimony to CD’s ongoing commitment to an enterprise that was admired from Day 1 and shows absolutely no signs of abating. There’s also a famous story about Beethoven who was so alarmed at the popularity of one of his works (a masterpiece forgotten which) that he told someone that that work was rubbish and that his genius was to be found in some other work - a much lesser work. What someone says is not an infallible guide to the truth, which is why we have analytical criticism. As for Dame Agatha, I find dubious her own statements because I (for one) believe she engaged in an early form of “spoofing” the journalists of her day.

Great recommendations. I’ve completed my pastel Agatha Christie series a couple of months ago. So I’ve got every (I think?) Agatha Christie story. I’ve started to read the Miss Marples as the ladies from the History Shelf do their A Marple a Month reading event. I’ve just read two though. (reviews up on my channel). Have you read any of the romance Agatha Christies? I was wondering if they are as excellent as her mystery novels. I’m not a big romance reader, but I was wondering if this was a great start for a novice romance reader.
@cafeaulivre
@cafeaulivre 8 ай бұрын
I’ve read the Unfinished Portrait. I’m not much of a romance reader myself, so I must admit that it wasn’t really my cup of tea. Having read up on AC’s life, it did feel very autobiographical. (Being cheated on) and it is certainly a bit more bitter than you would expect from a romance novel (perhaps it’s just this one though, have not read the others).
