Woman To Woman daytime talk show - Aired late 1983
Another cool find shared by Tricia Sheldon! :)
With Glory Monty, Genie Francis, Emily McClaughlin, Susan Sullivan
This is only a partial episode, but worth watching just to hear Emily McClaughlin's great story about her daughter.(*p.s. -- I soo dislike Glory Monty... alot!*)

Genie was tense. Probably because of her impending return to GH that month. She was most likely playing it safe where Monty was concerned, because of the turmoil surrounding her departure in 82. And always love me some “Jessie”.. She is genuine & gentle on both sides of the camera.

I believe the beginning of the end of the daytime drama genre can be traced back to Gloria Monty. She started all the silly, fantastical storylines and teenybopper characters that all the other shows thought they had to copy because GH had such great ratings. However, most of the GH ratings came just from the Luke and Laura romance and a lot of hype and PR.

Very true. She may have given soaps a resurgence of popularity but she also contributed to the dumbing down of the audience, so soap operas no longer had a literary quality but instead, seemed like cartoons.

Susan Sullivan made good points about the difference between Daytime and primetime drama...And I agree with her to a point. But I think Dallas was one show, in the first 9 years, that tended to let a storyline unfold, so you slowly got lured in, and you connected with the characters...especially from mid season 1- season 6. Sue Ellen descending into alcoholism comes to mind.

I can see your point. "Dallas" was gradual for the first several years, at least it would be by today's standards, where everything now is so cut to cut to keep the audience entertained. I liked Ms. Sullivan's point about how everyone on soaps are of a homogenized beauty vs. her time during "Another World", where the looks of the performers were more relatable. You just don't see that anymore in casting.

Let's see, will start with Emily McLaughlin. Wonderful woman, and did not know that little tidbit! Also an interesting discussion on the impact of soap operas on those watching. I for one always went to them as an escape, for entertainment. I knew they weren't real. In fact, I loved the fact they were overblown. Only negative was Ms. Monty's 'joke' at the first. THAT one didn't sit well with me at all.

Carl.. Totally agree on all points! I was flabbergasted by the stuff that came out of Monty's mouth. I don't know if she had just become anesthetized by the degrading direction of TV, or if she was just a egocentric, power-hungry, heartless shrew. (I’m thinking it was the latter of the two.) Susan Sullivan always carried herself so well. And you believed she wasn’t just putting a face on it for the cameras.

I loved Susan Sullivan in Falcon Crest and honestly anything she was in. She was great in Dharma & Greg and yes, she is soo very beautiful!!

She seemed very uncomfortable, and her joke about Laura was ill-advised (I got the feeling she might have realized this too). While I appreciated her honesty about the industry, it was kind of sad that the idea of soaps having less uber-attractive people was shrugged off. Genie seemed tense. Beautiful story from Emily. And Susan Sullivan was amazing here - honest, charismatic, funny. She took over as the host, as the real host was so wan. Like seeing Another Life represented. Thank you!

Nick.. I can GAURANTEE that there was fallout from Monty's comments on this show.. I was only surprised that we didn't hear gasps in disbelief from the live audience.... You could clearly see the shocked looks of her fellow guests... as if to say "Did she REALLY just say what I thought she said??"

Oh my gosh. I was just thinking how much Emily's daughter looks like her then found out she is adopted. Then Susan says the same thing I am thinking. Love Genie (my favorite in fact) but she seems to be somewhat careful about what she says with Gloria sitting right by her. Later in her life we wouldn't see that I don't believe.

I don’t know who some of those negative guests were but were they purposely brought there to put down soaps. No wonder why Gloria Monty had some of those replies. It’s called entertainment, people. Lighten up. Those negative Karens can just take a hike.

I think people were too confused by what she was saying to even react. I was surprised she actually said it was rape. By this time I thought they'd stopped saying it. And you could tell she knew that she'd kind of screwed up. Awkward all around.

Very interesting! Not sure what to make of Ms. Monty, other than she certainly did not come across well. As always, thanks for sharing!

Ok, I don't even remember this, no telling what else you will find on those tapes! Love Susan Sullivan now on Castle. Gloria was short-sited and really didn't have women's values at heart - for her characters or her fans.
