If you want to customize soap down to the last ingredient, cold process is a great option. Cold process soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye. That causes a chemical reaction called saponification. Melt and pour soap has already gone through that process.
Once you find your perfect recipe you can start getting creative with the designs. You get to choose the oils, colorants, scents, and more. In this video, we go over the basic tools and ingredients you need to get started. We also go over safety when working with lye, how to make soap, and how to clean up. Find more resources below!

Any equipment used for soap making should be exclusive - don’t use it for food. Lye and fragrance can get stuck in cracks, even with thorough washing. We also recommend hand washing instead of using the dishwasher.

Well your website already helped me figure out why my soap went to super thick trace in 15 seconds (cold lye but warm coconut oil) and now I find this! A charming presenter, no over-excited shouting, simple instructions and well filmed. This is the BEST soap making video I’ve found, and I’ve watched quite a few.

Vinegar! Always have white vinegar on hand for if you end up with lye on your skin. I put white vinegar into my sink of soap to deactivate any lye and I use straight vinegar to wipe down my surfaces and tools like my stick blender, thermometer and scale.

Vinegar on lye burn can actually make it worse! ALWAYS use plenty of cool, clean running water on a lye burn. For what it’s worth, common vinegar from the grocery store is only 5% vinegar and 95% water.

Love the way you explained. I started with melt and pour this Christmas, made some macarroon soaps to have fun and give to friends. My family love them. What I see is I need to work fast to make design. I see cold process you have more time so later I am thinking in having my first cold p soap. This is such a good way to be crwative and I learned a lot about what makes a good real soap .

It depends on the quality of your water. If it is good enough for drinking, it is probably okay for making soap. Some water contains chemicals or minerals that can cause problems with soap making. I would recommend making a small batch of soap using the water you have available and see how your soap turns out. Hope this helps! 🥰

Hi there, I’ve just made a batch of soap and I am a total beginner. I have a quick question which is. I made my lye solution allowed it to cool down. I waited about an hour to find that it was cold. I then proceeded to make the oil mix waited for that to cool and then combine the oil mix with the lye mix. I’ve just seen that it’s good to keep the two mixture at the same temperature because this help the batter form properly - as I allowed my lye solution to cool down too much, could this effect my final product?
