@@ramonbs6075 Absolutely I hear you, that's the difference between them. CR7 honed his body and drive and skill. Whereas Messi focused on maintaining his body to keep up but I feel like he focused most of his hardwork on improving his game sense or his game iq. It's still remarkable that both of these players are still performing at their respective ages. Most legends are retired, like look at their peers: Wanye Roney, Thierry Henry just to name a few. My personal opinion is both are amazing players, Messi is like the sun whearas Ronald is like the moon. The moon may get its light from the sun but we still appreciate both for their unique attributes.

Messi on the other hand says he voted for Ronaldo in Ballondor, never claimed he was the best, never boasted about his achievements... When asked who is the best, he usually lists players other than himself and Ronaldo, and gives young players' names, because he thinks the younger generations wil surpass them. I would say that's being humble.

To anybody who really understands football, Messi was already the GOAT before the WC. The one deciding factor touched on in this video is his vision. For all his skills with his feet and body movements, the one thing that sets him apart from all other players is his football IQ. This, to me, is what puts him above even Pele and Maradona, especially given the pace the game is played at today. Some of his haters have complained that he 'walks the field'. What they don't understand is that his 'walking' serves several purposes: 1) It throws off opponents, leading them to think that he's absent from the game. When he comes alive, you're in trouble. 2) He's x-raying the field and identifying the opponents' weak spots, the cracks, and where his own teammates are. This is why when he receives the ball, he usually already knows what he's going to do and it's often the unexpected. The pass to Molina against the Netherlands is a prime example of this. Nobody saw it coming. And to make it more outrageous, he executes it nutmegging the defender covering him. 3) He conserves his energy. He's not a player with a lot of physical stamina, especially at this age, and he knows it. Therefore he makes his body a very efficient little machine. If there ever was a debate about the GOAT, it was never between Messi and CR. That was just media hype to get ratings. The real debate is between Messi, Maradona, and Pele. Ronaldo is simply not in that category as a player. He has impressive numbers, but when you boil it down to the facts, one third of his goals come from either the penalty spot or are tap-ins. Messi is the most complete football player ever to have played the beautiful game. This is proven by how he changed his style in his later years. He knows he can no longer make those electrifying slaloms he used to when he was younger. So he changed his tactics and style to make up for it by playmaking, passing, and launching play, many times with a single touch. Genius.

People always mention Messi's 91 goal in a calendar year season to justify him being GOAT level. But what people seem to forget is not just the crazy amount of goals he had, but also the sheer brilliance of each goal. Some try to say Haaland's season is comparable to Messi in 2012 as playing in the PL is harder than La Liga. But try to think of each of his goals and if they were as creative as Messi's. Haaland is a complete forward playing in a well-oiled City team, whereas Messi played in a Barcelona team that depended on him for creativity, and that is the fundamental difference that most people forget when they try to put Messi just to goal numbers. Anyone that tries to pin Messi to just goals dont understand the beauty of the game Messi plays.

Those Barça players with also Puyol, Piqué, etc. were the basis of the teams that won two European Championships and in 2010 a World Cup wearing Spain's outfit, so with no Messi on their side. That's how good they were. Messi was the sublime icing of a top cake.

@@messidor-sb8sg 1) Prime Xavi and Iniesta was probably the core of that Barcelona team until 2012, they were old at that point and werent even first team choices by 2014. Messi played a deep playmaker role from 2013 onwards, where he would register more assist than the best playmakers in the game during MSN. 2) Messi even at 2010 was not just an icing on the cake, this is exactly the kind of misunderstanding I was referring to in my first comment. Even in 2010, Messi was not just waiting for passes from Xavi or Iniesta. He was playing more of a CAM role, with the ability to transition to a natural finisher which made him a hybrid of both positions ie false 9. To say he was just the icing on the cake ignores the abundance of assist he made in 2010s without having to rely on Xavi or Iniesta.

I truly don't understand Messi haters. How can you dislike him? As a human being he has shown to be humble, down to earth and not seeking ANY attention. You don't see him show off his wealth, houses, cars - nothing. No drama with women, his wife is with him since childhood. No team drama ever - he respects his teammates and the opposition. As a footballer there's no point to say anything, because everything has been said. This is the reason I prefer him over Ronaldo. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Cristiano - he is a phenomenal athlete. The hunger, the work-ethic, the discipline - truly mind-blowing. But from all I've seen and read over the years, I just can relate much more to Messi than him. I got to witness a fantastical rivalry, the likes of which may not happen anytime soon again. Grateful to both of them for this! ❤

Even before the World Cup he was the Greatest of all time. Ronaldo was a great Striker and goal scorer where Messi is the best all round player. Its like you got the Golden boot in the World cup for most goals then you got the Golden Ball for the best player of the Tournament and this is what Messi is. Its not just about scoring goals for Messi (even though he scores a lot) its about his dribbles, his passes, his assists, he does it all. And even at 35, I still rate him above Mbappe and the best player still playing. He can basically still do everything he could at 19, but the only thing he has lost his pace, so he isnt as effective while dribbling now. But he has everything else still and that shows you how good he is. Btw, I used to think Maradona was the best, but he didn't keep the highest standard for as long as Messi did (I think mainly because of the drugs he consistently took and it shortened his career) while Messi hasn't lost any of his skills and still just as good when he plays at 35 as he was at 19, this is why Messi is the GOAT for me.

Well said. Pele did have Messi's longevity--which is why personally I and most non-argentina-fanboys thought Pele was the goat until maybe a decade ago--but if you watch the videos of his play, he was playing against garbage, the level of world football is so much higher now than back then and yet Messi still stands atop the throne. The magic of peak Maradona with the longevity of dominance of Pele in the most competitive era football has ever seen. Messi is undoubtedly the goat. I don't even understand the people who can still argue Ronaldo, imo ronaldo still hasn't even surpassed Pele in career greatness.

Every time he had the ball, the fan knew Messi had the potential to make something magical happen. Whether it's dribbling past 4,5,6 defenders and putting it in the net, taking a wicked shot from outside the box, or making an impossible pass for an assist, SOMETHING was going to happen. Here in Argentina we knew he was different since he went to La Masia, I remember it clearly, watching the local news around '99/2000 mentioning him going to Europe at that very young age, sports media started rising the hype, looking for the next Maradona as they did during the 90's (and we always had great, great players, those were the times of Aimar and Riquelme just to mention a couple). GOAT tag was never between Messi & Ronaldo, at least for football fans, it was always the Media which milked it out. It was always between Pele, Maradona & Leo Messi. For me, Messi is the best and out of respect for Pele & Maradona, I would say the 3 Gods of the Game equally stand above other players by some distance.

I totally share Thierry Henry's comparative views of Messi and Ronaldo. Ronaldo works really, really hard to reach as far as he has while Messi is naturally gifted and also works hard. Its the age old tale of the born genius vs those who have to claw their way into the spotlight. Hard work can get you really far but in most cases it's not enough to surpass someone who's more gifted. Messi is truly the GOAT. I can understand Ronaldo's tears and the frustration he demonstrates at times.

It's a story like Mozart and Salieri. Salieri was also frustrated by Mozart's genius and hated him. Worked against him, like Ronaldo hates Messi and launched hate campaign v Messi after his 7th Ballon d'or. Messi said not a word. I'm so impressed by that. It clinches it for me that he's absolutely the GOAT.

6:19 this pass he is doing here is not an assist, but is a pass that goes to the foot of the teammate so that teammates does the assist. How many passes like this have we seen Messi do? Thousands. The ability to see the field of play as if he is watching it from above, is totally insane. The precision of these type of passes in the box with when there are opponents in the box too is phenomenal. Me as a footballer and a forward. I am amazed at Messi's view of the field. Out of this world.

Of course he is the best. He scored a hell of a lot of goals, and still managed to have a great amount of assists. On top of that his dribblings and his passes (especially in his prime) are out of this world. There are other great goal scorers, players with a lot of assists, great dribblers and players who can play great passes. But there is no other single player in the world who can do all of that on Messis Level. CR7 is a great goal scorer, there is not doubt about it and he might be equal in that department. But with Assists he is already far behind and he could never do the passes that Messi does or did, let alone the isane dribblings that Messi did for years.
