As a red manc im no fan of the scousers. But Steve Mc was an awesome midfielder probably the best in the country by the late 80s, he was on another planet than Vincent Jones tbh.

Steve McMahon was a top midfielder tbf mate but there were many in the game at that time. Every club would put their midfielder of choice up there but not many were winning everything like Liverpool were. McMahon wouldn't lace Roy Keane's boots though mate. Keano is a legend in the game. Yeah he could be a dirty little scumbag at times but he never got the credit he deserved by UEFA when they chose Ballon D'or winners or even contenders. I could never understand that. Could you?? How the fuck Beckham was in contention but the real man of that UTD ERA Roy Keane was constantly overlooked by UEFA. The semi final against Juventus in the Stadio Del Alpi? Keane's goal that night set UTD up to go on and win the whole thing out right. Keano had to contend with not only Edgar Davids but also ZiZu Zidane in midfield. I recall that game vividly as if it were only yesterday. Keano struggled for the 1st 30 mins but by then he had both in his back pocket. He had got to grips with 2 of the greatest midfielders the game has ever seen and ran the show after that. That was the night that should've won Keano the Ballon D'or for the year '99 - 2000.. It would've been a fiting tribute for a man that single handedly dragged this UTD side by its boot laces through so many tough games during that Era in UTD's history. Christ I hated UTD and Fergie but eventually I have to admit to respecting them for all they achieved during that time in the clubs history. It will never be rivalled again I don't think. Pep Guardiola could probably have a good crack at it if he stayed long enough at Citeh but I don't think he could stick one club for that length of time. He's admitted that in interviews already but you never know. How is it at the minute with Citeh being the top side now? It must be tough to take but it's football mate, eh? I still remember the 1st Premier League season when Villa and Utd were going for the title. We came up short t the time but it was a great season between both clubs tbh. It was so heartbreaking to see my beloved Villa fail at the final hurdle but even more so that it was to Man Utd.

Back in the day every team seemed to have an "enforcer". Normally a midfield player in the number 4, 6 or 8 position. Arguably these guys were not as skilful as the poster boys (Vinnie was definitely in that category) but they were there to win the ball, break down the opposition attack & take a booking or two for theam if required. As a kids over our local park 3 of us would play what we called "Tommy Smith & Norman Hunter" as 2 of us would deliberately try to clatter the other guy with the ball. His job was to try & keep the ball without getting flattened. It did help you develop your timing when tackling or trying to avoid a tackle. During my time watching Arsenal during the 70's it was Peter Storey who was their "enforcer".

Well said mate.. Spot on with ur analysis .. Footballers are far more protected these days because they are the real commodity in the game now. They have all the power since the Bosman ruling but there are far too many fannies playing the game today than the case back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and indeed even the early 1990's. The major change happened when the Premier League took the reigns at the top flight and everything changed for the better, apparently!!! Look nobody wants to see players getting badly hurt but if the culture is right and players are made to understand that as long as they are fair in the challenge and not dirty, al la Vinnie Jones (Psycho) then all's fair in love and Football. Problem is managers expected or told their so called hard men in their teams to go out and make an example of certain players in the opposition. That's fair to say of many managers in the game. I'd say it still goes on in the lower leagues today. Some managers will never learn. Wimbeldon were my local Premier League side back in the 1990's and I used to go down the Palace to watch them because you would get to see all the big teams coming down Selhurst. I lived in Thornton Heath at the time and Selhurst Park was my local ground so I would go down to watch Palace in the championship and watch the Dons in the EPL. It was dead handy to be fair. I worked in a pub at the time and I would finish every Saturday at 14:00 and be at Selhurst by 15:00 for the kick off. I'm a Villa fan and went up to many midweek games at Villa Park but I couldn't get to the great hallowed turf of my beloved Villa on Saturdays do I'd go up for midweek games and especially UEFA CUP matches during the week. They were some of my best times as a Villan tbh. Big Fat Ron capt of Army.. This was my best time while living in England. I'm Irish btw but living in England meant a lot to me personally and I made many friends over there. I miss it and fully intend on moving back over one day but it will have to be closer to Aston Villa Fc this time. I used to travel up on my own for the midweek games. I didn't know anybody up there and I would make the trip back down straight after the game for work next morning. It was a crazy time tpo be a Villa fan because we were riding fairly high by Premier League standards. There was no TOP 4 as there is today but if there were we would've been dead certs for Chumos League football every season. Sory about the long winded rant my friends. Just got carried away with my football experiences back in the 1990's.. Best time of my life tbh.. Villa fan in peace.. #UTV #vtid Come on Villa batter those noses this weekend and take 2nd place from DERBY County

I find it funny in football players get a reputation for being 'hard' for clattering through the back of people or elbowing them in the face all while they are actually trying to play football. I had a mate who'd tell me about a mate of his nicknamed knuckles who was so tough but every story of this guy being hard involved him cheap shotting people unexpectedly. Same thing really there's hard tackling and there's being a fouling pos just for the sake of it. Watch England cricketer Brian Close taking a barrage of West Indies quick bowling on the body rather than lose his wicket that's a hard man. Watch Rory Burns box the majority of a fight with a broken jaw against Beltran that's a hard man. Jones is a joke and can't fight at all he's just hyper aggressive and therefore relies on intimidating people, when someone's not afraid he's in trouble.

32:00 - No, Jones, that's something you've got to live with, not him. McMahon came straight at you, face-to-face, unlike your sneaky Cup Final challenge where you hit him on the blind side then got up and ran away as NIGEL SPACKMAN moved towards you! That challenge, incidentally, when one of you got up bleeding profusely and, guess what, it wasn't McMahon. The editing at 31:20 is bollocks, also. McMahon did not receive treatment for this tackle. He was getting treatment for a completely different incident where he got the ball smashed into his face at close contact. Look at 31:02 - you see McMahon spring to his feet.
