Just as football boots have changed over the years, so have footballs. The one thing you need to even play the game in the first place seems to be constantly evolving, with Nike and Adidas each making attempts at rethinking what a football should be and how it should perform. Well, just in time for the 2020/2021 season, Nike has something new, and it's one of the weirdest looking balls ever!
In today's video I give you a technical break down of the most high-tech and aerodynamic football ever, the Nike Flight Ball! We discuss why it looks the way it does, how it performs compared to other balls and what Nike are trying to achieve with this bold new design. Just want to clear things up a bit, I am going to use my physics degree so bear with me! The jabulani is smoother and so the air DOESN'T grip as well as it does with the Nike ball for example. The ridges on the Nike ball are added to break up AND re-attach surface flow around the ball, making for a more consistent (less turbulent) flow of air around the ball and in its wake. The jabulani was unpredictable because flow separated MORE easily from its surface and in unpredictable spots on the ball. More seams and texturing actually helps a more stable flight (but there is a compromise with friction drag too, can't just have a ball made of seams obviously). Also fun fact: knuckleballs are best with a small amount of spin rather than no spin! Learnt that from a paper on knuckleballs in baseball -- I actually did research on knuckleballs at university. Gotta thank Joltter and Buduiza for inspiration.

Seems random but i just finished a work about the physical explanation behind the knuckleball. And unfortunately you're not completely right Jogi. So when a ball has a surface that is too smooth, the air that passes it cannot grip to the surface and passes the ball too fast. That way, the point where the air 'breaks' and passes the ball either on top or under gets a random position and jumps from the front to the back several times, which caused the totally random movements of the Jabulani for example. So when a ball has a textured surface, it grabs more air and has a way more consistent point where the air breaks. That's also why these balls are able to curve in the air. It's called the Magnus-Effect and funny enough, when a ball has a completely smooth surface, it can even result in an Anti-Magnus-Effect. For those who got to try the Jabulani, i'm sure you noticed that it was also harder to curve.

I'm a mechanical engineer and I got A+ in my fluid dynamics courses. And I can confirm what Nike is saying about groves and making the ball flight more predictable and make it go further. It's called creating turbulence on the surface and its 100% scientific and actually easy to calculate how much difference that surface vs smooth surface will make.

The tech behind the ball seems solid. Reminds me of the golf ball industry and how dimple patterns can effect performance and flight characteristics. Because the grooves on this model are so pronounced, I wonder if debris clogging up the grooves and effecting performance might become an issue.

The grooves reduce the continuous surface area of the ball therefore the air has less to grip to as it flows around the ball while it is flying through the air.

Also if u had a completely smooth ball it would move so unpredictibally to the point where if u shot an inside of the foot curved shot it would behave as if u shot it with the outside of ur foot. It would also knuckle very easily. Hence the jabulani

Yes, yes, yes. I believe more groves are better for stability and the smoothness of the Jabulani is what caused it's crazy effects. What I want to hear is why, if the traditional 32 panels has proven to perform better(i.e. Select Brillant super), brands insist in making weird panels.

Sales. Most consumers get excited about something new and different. This is both of those things. It's hard to argue that this isn't the most intriguing match ball out there at the moment. I'm with you a the traditional 32 panel design, I think that should be the standard, but as long as FIFA doesn't standardize much of anything when it comes to match balls, big brands will continue to push what's allowed. That's not to say that there haven't been good products to come of this freedom to innovate, but some consistency when it comes to literally the only piece of equipment required to play this sport in the first place would make sense.

I hope someone on here can help, I’m looking for older match balls that I can’t seem to find anywhere like the 2014 mls match ball and older boots like the magista 1, magista opus 1 and Nike ctr360 maestri lll in crimson, a lot of sites don’t seem to carry any stuff that’s to old

Josh says that this ball is the same as Merlin in terms of its weight (heavier than adidas match balls). But when I used it today as my friend had it, I felt it was more like an adidas ball in terms of the weight and noticeably lighter than Merlin. Am I wrong about this? Could somebody comment on this? Honestly this ball feels so good when you hit it cleanly.
