Social media companies make billions of dollars from advertising to minors. Maybe that should be stopped the same way laws forbid advertising junk food to minors.

In the United States, there are no federal statute laws that outright forbid the advertising of junk food to minors. Instead, the regulation of such advertising is primarily managed through a combination of industry self-regulation, state and local initiatives, and general advertising laws enforced by federal agencies. *Federal Regulations and Guidelines* Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC oversees advertising practices to ensure they are not deceptive or unfair. While there are no specific federal laws targeting junk food ads to children, the FTC can take action against misleading advertisements. The FTC has also engaged in initiatives to promote better industry practices, such as the 2008 report "Marketing Food to Children and Adolescents," which urged improvements in food marketing to children. Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI): This is a self-regulatory program where participating companies pledge to advertise only healthier dietary choices to children under 12 or to avoid advertising to them altogether. The CFBAI sets nutrition criteria for foods advertised to children and monitors compliance. Federal Communications Commission (FCC): The FCC regulates broadcast advertising and ensures adherence to general standards for content, but does not have specific restrictions on junk food ads to children. *State and Local Regulations* Certain states and localities have implemented their own measures to address junk food advertising targeted at children. These measures can vary widely and include: Some cities in California have considered or implemented ordinances to reduce junk food marketing in schools or on school property. New York City has enacted policies to restrict the sale and promotion of sugary drinks and junk food in schools and public institutions. *School and Public Institution Policies* Many states and school districts have policies that restrict the sale and advertising of junk food on school campuses. These policies often extend to vending machines, school stores, and school-sponsored events. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented standards under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that limit the types of foods and beverages that can be sold in schools, which indirectly impacts advertising by reducing the availability of junk food in schools. *Industry Self-Regulation* Many major food and beverage companies have pledged to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the CFBAI and other similar initiatives, committing to promote healthier choices and reduce the marketing of unhealthy foods to children. *Challenges and Ongoing Efforts* While there is significant advocacy for stricter regulations, industry lobbying and the balance between regulatory oversight and free market principles complicate the establishment of comprehensive federal laws. Public health organizations continue to push for stronger regulations and more effective enforcement mechanisms to protect children from the negative impacts of junk food advertising. Overall, while the U.S. relies heavily on self-regulation and state-level initiatives to manage junk food advertising to minors, there is a growing movement advocating for more robust federal regulations to address the issue comprehensively.

Parents need to take care of their own children,

If parents are ignorant of computer and electronic technology (especially immigrant parents with low English proficiency), they have no education to curb the use of social media by their children. Their kids are tech-savvy and can run circles around their parents. My mother can barely use a TV remote let alone a flip phone.

@@RaymondHngnot just them, Most mid red state parents don't even know a thing about the internet let alone social media & they never even once in life travelled outside the country & Only just knows to get hooked on the couch watching Fox spoon-fed oldie news channels world view. While talking with them, While from experience., It almost feels like they're still stuck in some decades old era.

There are to many parents that aren't taking care of the social media situation and it shows in so many kids that aren't even trying in school. American familes, work force and communities will pay for this if we don't do something. I worked as a maintenance worker in a large school district and the problem is REAL.

No doubt social media addiction is a serious problem, but putting another label warning on another thing only encourages more disconnect.

This is why I don't use social media! It's healthier to go and socialize in person. Kids need to develop strong social skills ,and that's not going to happen using social media !

@@timbly5824 Was referring to "age appropriate" idea about social media access by minors, which should also be applied to gender reaffirming curriculum which have already started being given to elementary and high school students who are basically all minors. As for guns being accessed by minors, a more stricter legislation should be introduced about the responsibility of adult gun owners on keeping their hardware safe and away from minors.

I tried to limit my child's access to smartphones and social media 24 yrs ago. The kids seemed addicted even that long ago. I received criticism from all fronts. It was even suggested that it was abusive to my child that I tried to restrict usage. At least these warnings would be some support to parents who try to help their child.
