I'm a 11th grader being part of this gen Z but I can proudly say that it's been 2+ years since I've quit social media and games. I use KZfaq for motivation only. Let me tell you my experience, you may feel disconnected from world may lose plenty of social media fake friends but you can instead do things in reality, my scores got better at school, my mind got more focused on things, I go to gym regularly, I read financial knowledge books and my life is going as I want it to be.

@@ROYAL01JAAt …..this is partially correct, as YT is actually more of a searchable information platform (which is completely different compared to FB, IG, Snap, X, Tok, etc.) Yes- there are “comment sections” on videos, but historical data (Google analytics) shows that over 90% of viewers never leave a single comment and just “lurk”….. so not very “social” at all 🙌🏽

Video games can increase brain matter. It's a stimulating activity, and research shows that those experiencing memory loss may benefit from playing video games by delaying the brain's aging process. You can also lesson the impact after a traumatic event by playing Tetris, to possibly prevent PTSD from developing. Social media is a whole different category, and I think placing video games under that umbrella is a reach.

I’m a social media marketing major, now I’m no professional, but i honestly want to exploit this problem to its bone. But how do I do that when these algorithms will not be in my favor as I try to exploit their very essence. It’s bad enough the system we are in is already hijacked from the food we eat, to the medicine we take, to the media we consume. But honestly it feels like there is no hope at all for change. It feels like I’m shooting through this impenetrable wall to have a beam of light shine through that I know will never reach its intended gain. The people he’s speaking of/ companies are ruled by people that won’t even let you get close to those truths, and even if you say you do get close, they will silence you like no other, but it’ll never be attainable. Feels hopeless

what people dont get is that even though social media helps bridge connections, it ruins them too- by not having to face to face someone, people are more divided and put down their feelings behind a screen thinking they are safe- this causes a feedback probelm and echo chamber issue as well, remember when your high school friend in 2010 had 461 friends? yeah do you think they in 2024 hang out with all 461? they probably dont even hang out with more than 2 of them, all it is to me is an open door to everyone's business , if anything its like a dating app, add a ton of friends, scan through, filter through, get rid of the ones you dont like-

To all the people watching this: Our brains and dopamine receptors are fried. I used to be a chain smoker. And I don't see much difference between social media addiction and smoking. It feels like I have rich and wonderful memory of my childhood (pre-internet era) than the post-internet era. I got my first smartphone after I completed highschool. And I don't have much clarity and rich memories of my life after that. Possibly because of the mental clutter all these thousands of useless information created. Try watching social dilemma again. This is screwing up our lives and we know it. But somehow it's normalised. It's like the messages on the cigarette packets "Smoking causes cancer". People know it but the companies know they will smoke anyways. So that message is useless.
