In this exerpt from a recent Direct interview, Mary Eberstadt points out that Christianity teaches us we have a place in the cosmos, a binding responsibility to society and a coherent community to live in. Is society 'nicer' now that we have largely moved on from this? Mary Eberstadt argues that part of the reason politics is so vicious in the modern age is because the code of conduct that kept many people civil - Christianity - is on the decline.
Mary Eberstadt holds the Panula Chair at the Catholic Information Center and is a senior fellow with the Faith and Reason Institute. She is the author of several books, including Primal Screams and How the West Really Lost God, and has written widely for newspapers, magazines, and journals.
A frequent contributor to magazines and journals including TIME, the Wall Street Journal, National Review, and First Things, Eberstadt has also served as an editor at The Public Interest, The National Interest, and Policy Review. During the Reagan administration, Mrs. Eberstadt spent two years as a speechwriter to Secretary of State George Shultz. In summer 1981, she became the first female voting member of the student body at formerly all-male Deep Springs College.

John, that is the nail on the head, having a society with no forgiveness or love, truly is nihilistic.

Where I live, society and social life have lost nearly all their charm. Things were tanking ever since the turn of the century but now and ever since the start of the pandemic, very few people are pleasant anymore. There's been a collapse of personality, of manners, of sociability and everything that makes people worth being around.

Yes, I agree. It's just as the scriptures foretold for the 'last days'. 2 Timothy 3:13 tells us that "wicked people will advance from bad to worse". Luke 21:28 tells us that this is the time to "lift up our heads because deliverance is near"

They may remove religion entirely from the public square. However, they will never be able to remove it from the soul of truly good people. Those good people will always be good stewards of those in need.

Just one of many reasons that Protestants have characterised the Papacy as anti-christ. The term is from the Greek word "ante", meaning "in place of," i.e. a counterfeit for the real thing: fake Christianity.

It is simply a huuuuuge category mistake to speak of the ‘decline of Christianity’! The argument is predicated on the (false) assumption that ‘being Christian’ is nothing more than a matter of mere belief - ticking ‘Christian’ in response to a pollsters question fails the essential nature of what maketh a Christian - dilate for a moment on the immense import of Christ’s words in Mat 7:21 for example…

About a year ago I watch a vlog about AI and how it learns, that it learns from the negative posts as much as the positive. We really need to be careful that we post positive things about ourselves and the planet instead of complaining as AI cannot distinguish between someone just having a moan or being really angry, to AI its the same thing. We should treat it like a small child and not argue in front of it. Secondly there's a bit more anger in the world but this is just weather as people adjust to the new world that is coming. Some are already working towards this, some are realising they need to be doing something other than the daily grind, others are stuck or working through their own problems. Don't take it personally, this is meant to happen and will resolve. Blessings

Non-Western societies can do without these Christian niceties, Japan being a case in point. On the whole, I don't think it makes Japan a better place because of it, but it doesn't stop it from being viable. It seems to me that the US is becoming more similar to Japan.

@daysofnoah

@@opencurtin No.... there are no denominations in the Bible. There is only one church. the Church of Jesus Christ. Catholics practice idolatry by praying to Mary. Catholics do not beleve that you are saved by grace alone as the word of God states. The Catholic church violates Matthew 23:9 incessantly. The Catholic church is divided against itself. The Pope is directly responsible.

I accept the general rules behind Christianity, tend to support a stable society but I believe it is fallacious to use this correlation to say the fall of Christianity is the cause of the current fall of civilization. It is likely that there are several behaviors that lead to stable societies. This view is supported by the fact that there are many religions throughout the world that have had long periods of stability and have laws that enforce similar values, i.e. the value of life, value of truth, consequence of theft, etc

@@ianbuttery8693 You might be right that it is a logical fallacy but the only way any society can work is to have people signed up to an agreed modus operandi. I can't see how this can be other than religious in nature given that anything else would be the subject of endless contention.
