Hello Unwinders & Stickarounders!
This was a hard and harrowing movie to watch and harrowing doesn't even describe completely how this movie experience was, especially with the fact that it was based on true events.

39:34 Fortunatelly most of them are alive and well (14 actually, Javier Methol passed away in 2015 and Coche Inciarte in 2023). I am very proud of saying I've met five of them and will meet Fito Strauch by the end of this month as well and they all are wonderful people, so loving and inspiring. This story has literally saved my life a couple times when I thought I could not cope anymore and I am extremely happy about this movie. This is the respectul portrayal it deserved, as it made it clear that all of them made their contribuition, not only a few. I loved your video! :D

They did make fires, but very, very rarely. There are several reasons for this. One being they had very little to burn. There is nothing but rocks and snow on the mountain. Anything to burn came out of the plane. Most everything burnable in the fuselage they needed for their continued survival. Like the luggage, which was necessary to block out the bitter cold at night to insulate the fuselage. What few could be spared they used for their "x" in the snow in the hopes someone flying overhead might see it. They needed every bit of clothes to stay warm or for tools (like bandages, rags, etc), so none of those could be burned. They occasionally burned a few small wooden Coca Cola crates, some useless papers they came across, and money, but these fires would be brief (and small, so useless for smoke signals). They also wanted to save some cash in case the "Expeditionaries" (Nando, Roberto, and TinTin) succeeded in escaping the Andes, but found themselves in a situation where they might need money (like to buy food off someone or use to convince a reluctant stranger to help them). Other things might have been burnable, but were made of unfamiliar material or chemically treated in such a way it caused fumes. So they worried about inhaling something potentially hazardous. The weather and winds within the Andes also created problems. They could only light a fire on clear days when the winds were weak or non-existent, which was rare. Otherwise the winds would easily blow out the fire. They couldn't make the fires inside the fuselage, out of fear of accidentally burning down their only refuge from the bitter cold. Losing the fuselage would be certain death for all of them. Finally, it was pointed out by the groups' student doctors, Roberto Canessa and Gustavo Zerbino, cooking the meat burned away precious and desperately needed nutrients and calories. They strongly discouraged the group from cooking the meat in order to not let a single thing go to waste. Not even a single calorie provided to them by the bodies of their friends. And the group really needed every calorie/nutrient. They tried to expend very little energy while on the mountain, but just sitting and breathing still burned a lot of calories at that altitude. Despite all the dead that accumulated over the course of their entrapment on the mountain, they still rationed the bodies as much as possible since they had no idea how long they'd be stuck there. They distributed the meat to 27 people once a day before the avalanche (although some still ate little or none at all some days, but they were given their rations regardless), then just 19 after the avalanche, before dropping to 16 by the end of their ordeal. And after the avalanche, the people who died in the initial plane crash were lost under the snow and it took a while for the survivors to relocate them, as well as bodies up on the mountain who had been sucked out of the plane right after the crash. They were eating just enough to sustain themselves so they could still move. By the time Nando and Roberto left the fuselage for their final climb to get help, the remaining bodies of the dead were running low. Among them Nando's mother and sister, which made him all the more desperate to leave the crash sight and hike out. In most cases, any fires made were primarily for the sake of some of the survivors who struggled to swallow the raw meat and keep it down. The loss of calories in cooking meant little for the few members of their group who were maybe choking down a small bite of food here or there. Eating their meat cooked was the only way to get them to eat something (and keep it down). However, they had to keep working on trying to get them to eat the meat raw. Ultimately, there was little to burn and what little there was to burn the survivors worried they might come to need later. Plus the winds were rarely favorable and it just wasn't possible to do it more than a scant number of times during their 71 days on the mountain.

Of the 16 survivors, 14 are still alive. Javier Methol , the eldest one, died in 2014. Coche Inciarte died last year, just before the release of the film. Several of them made cameos. Carlitos Páez played the role of his own father Carlos Páez Vilaró. This film was made with the support of all the survivors and the families of the deceased. The director, J.A. Bayona made in 2011 another beautiful film based on a true story, it's called "The impossible".

I also had some concerns for the actors especially as they were a long way from home as the majority of the film was shot in Spain and the actors are from Uruguay and Argentina. The filming actually took longer than the survivors were on the mountain for so the actors weight loss was more gradual, and fully medically supervised. The majority of the main cast filming was at a ski resort so they were going down to hotel rooms at night. There were certainly times the cast were cold and felt hungry but there is actually a lot of make up and effects work in the film which I certainly did not realise at the time I was watching it. There is a making of documentary on netflix too.

I was 14 years old when this occurred. I remember the news reports about it being broadcasted here in Australia. I was 17 when I read the book ‘Alive’ by Paul Piers Read. I own 12 books about the Andes Survivors including 6 that were written by the survivors (Pedro, Eduardo, Carlitos, Nando, Roberto, Coche). I haven’t read Coche’s book yet as I only recently bought it. I read ‘Society of the Snow’ by the journalist Pablo Vierci earlier this year. I had been waiting for years for it to be published in English. Vierci is a friend of several of the survivors. One of the most moving stories in the book is Arturo’s death as told by Gustavo Zerbino. It is even sadder in the book than in the movie. Gustavo Zerbino never return to his medical studies after his rescue as he said he had seen too much death on the mountain. Roberto Canessa became a paediatric cardiologist and has save the lives of many children.

Hello, several of the survivors made cameos in the movie. In the airport scene, the one who opens and holds the door is Nando Parrado and her family, it is the real Nando. In the scene where the list of survivors is read, who plays his own father in Carlos Paez and in the scene where they enter the hospital, who is behind Roberto Canessa is the real Roberto (Current pediatric heart surgeon). In the scene where Numa Turcati arrives home at night, the person who greets him is Numa's uncle and the house is Numa's real house. On KZfaq you can find several interviews with survivors or the conferences given by Parrado and Canessa. Greetings from Cordoba, Argentina

Amazing reaction, thank you for sharing it and watch it in spanish. A few facts: Nando made quite a recovery because even when his head swelled with the impact, his head was facing the cold metal of the plane also he was left kind of outside thinking he was dead. This served as a very cold ice pack to heal the swelling on his head and make him better. The idea Nando had to want to eat the bodies came out of anger that the pilots' negligence got them to be stuck in the mountain helpless. Let's not forget he lost his mum, sister and 2 best friends. Nando's anger it's what pushed him to want to get out of there no matter what. They were peeing black because of severe dehydration. Fito was the one who thought of making water, glasses to protect their eyes from the reflexion of the sun in the snow and also chose the bodies that would be eaten along with his cousins Daniel and Eduardo. Fito was called the inventor. Carlitos the young person who crashed into the suitcases with his car in the airport was a spoiled child who came from a wealthy family. He was very spoiled, he even had a nanny, after this trip his perspective of life absolutely changed. In the plane, he was in charge of making sure there were not drafts in the plain or reduce the possibility of drafts using the suitcases and plane seats, he was very good at it. He also was the one who made the sleeping bag that Nando and Roberto used to sleep in during their walk to Chile. They had so many cigarettes because in Chile cigarettes were scarce and Javier Methol, the man who lost his wife in the avalanche, worked in a Tabaco company so thought it was a good business to take a lot of cigarettes and sell them in Chile. Numa did not get injured like that in the real events, someone walked on his leg by accident because of the lack of space in the plane and because he was not eating his body did not have much strength to recover from the bruise. He was the last one who died and his death pushed Nando and Roberto to say fuck it lets do this, let's save ourselves because no one else is going to. The actual survivors loved this version more than the 1993 version, because it doesn't idolise the survivors as the heroes, instead recognises and considers those who died and their memory. Reporters keep digging in a very nasty way how they survived, what did they eat, etc. The survivors were very secretive and ashamed about saying they ate human beings and were scared to be judged, being Catholics, by their families and friends also going to jail. They had a press conference were they answered to reporters questions ONCE instead that addressing the situation 100000 times to every reporter who asked. They asked the reporters and people for respect of their choices considering the very harsh circumstances they had to face. Pancho Delgado (Numa's best friend in the movie was they one who spoke in this conference) The actual survivors made a Kameo in the movie Nando, Roberto, Coche Inciarte, Numa's real nephew and Carlitos were is different scenes. The house shown as Numa's house in the movie was actually his real house back in 1972. The reason why Zerbino would not leave without the suitcase it's because he hoped that tokens from the death people, like personal belongings such as jewelry, rosaries, ID's, letters written before dying were taking back to give to their families. That actually happened the real survivor refused to leave without the suitcase. In the movie isn't shown but the rescue was in 2 stages. They had to rescue one lot of people that day and the next lot the day after. Some survivors had to stay another night waiting for the other helicopters to arrive. Those left behind the first day were left with food and a team of rescuers. A survivor said the rescuers were scared of them after seeing all the human remaining all over the place also the smell and dirt was unbearable. All the people who died in the crash are in the mountain buried with a cross and parts of the plane to remember them. The survivors go and visit the grave quite often. The only person from the victims who is not there anymore is Rafael Echavarren. During the time in the mountain he used to say I'm Rafael Echavarren and I will go back home. His dad got told this and he did all in his power even nearly got in trouble and in prison for this, but he got the right to dig his son up and take his body back to Uruguay. There is a man who was part of the search team that were looking for the plane during the search missions. His name is Claudio Lucero and he had made quite strong arguments in the media about how he believes the 27 people left alive in the plane after the crash planned and plotted maliciously all the events that happened to them to gain fame. He states they could have left the mountain days before the day they got rescued, but chose to stay longer and go through hunger and lost to become famous and earn money.

I am happy you enjoyed the reaction. Thank you for all this information. It's making my skin crawl to think about the realities of this situation again, but so glad the survivors dealt with things the way they did afterwards. I can not even phathom what they needed to deal with and the fact that there were people like the guy you mentioned, who made such ridicilous accusations against them, makes me angry even, hecause who would ever do such a thing to gain fame, that is beyond pathetic of that man. But anyway, people who never had something like this happen to them, will never understand and unfortunately there are horrible people like that man who will always try to come up with some crazy story to discredit the actual people who went through what they went through. I wasn't aware of the 1993 film until I told my husband about this one and he said, is it "Alive", and then only realized there was another film, not sure though if I'd want to watch it and go through this experience again, this one was as real as it could get for me, will forever stick in my mind. Excellently made!

The film was partially filmed up at the Valley of Tears where the fuselage actually came to rest. JA Bayona went up there and filmed things for the backdrop of Mt. Seler (named by Nando Parrado in honour of his father), plus the surround for the Andes. The sound mixer also recorded things like the wind and how the snow sounds up there to be used in this film. So it is by and large authentic to the experiences these boys went through. As for Numa Turcatti. Numa was the one righteous man we see once in a lifetime. He was a law student who was about to take the bar to become a lawyer. His arguments against eating the dead was based on both his spiritual beliefs, and his studies in law. The four days buried was because in tandem with the avalanche, they were also experiencing gale force winds and a four day storm. That was why the shelter of the fuselage was better until the storm was over. Arturo died of pneumonia. His lungs were full of fluid. Usually antibiotics could help, but up there Roberto and Gustavo had nothing. As for them being clean shavn, not all men grow bushy beards. Some may have tons of head hair, but very little if no facial hair. The actor playing Numa is Enzo Vogrinzic, actually lost about 50 pounds during the filming. He went from 150 to 103lbs. All the actors were on a closely monitored diet to fully depict the trials the actual men went through up there. As one's body begins to diminish, they become somewhat old as they no longer have the suppleness of the muscle they had. The protein in the bodies gave them nothing but lean energy, but not carbohydrates we all need to sustain us. As for Numa dying. He was the voice of the dead, the ones who didn't return. The ones who survived are still close to this day. There are 14 left as Javier Methol (the man who lost his wife) died in 2014, and Jose Luis "Coche" Inciarte (the one who needed help walking) died in 2023. They still gather on rescue day, or as they call it "rebirth day." They have all gone back up to the crash site many times since 1972. One of them, Eduardo Strauch, is part of an adventure team that takes sivilians up to the crash site. All that remains up there is wreckage as the remander of the fuselage was burned and the bodies buried in a communal grave. Roberto Canessa (med student) and Nando Parrado (man who lost his sister and mother) have been called exceptional in what they did. Mountaineers and alpinists from Ed Viesters (summited Everest five times) and others have called what they did as amazing considering they had no equipment and no training. Also not to forget their physical condition. As for the long-term effects of what happened. Many of them do suffer from a form of PTSD, but with the other survivors they have help and support. The one thing I have to say about these boys. If you remember from the beginning of the film, Numa's voice over stated many of these boys had known each other when they were young. Many of their fathers knew each other as many played rugby for Stella Maris College as teens/young men. These men formed lasting bonds that have survived to this day due in large part to their faith, and their love....always love for each other. And at the end of this story as it still is 52 years later, it is all about the love they had for each other and the love they had for the ones who didn't return. This story is about the power of love. Could we all wish to have the same spirit these men had and have today. I've been with this story since reading "Alive" back in 1976. I have followed these men since then. The one thing I have learned from them is not to squander away your life as you might not know what as Roberto Canessa has said, "When your plane will crash." Some info about where they all are today. Roberto Canessa (med student and one of the ones who made the walk) is now a world reknown pediatric cardio thorasic surgeon. He operates on fetuses inside their mother's wombs in order for them to be born healthy and life their lives as they should. He has won many awards for it including many in the United States. Nando Parrado (one who lost his sister and mother) is an vintner, and former race car drivier and who is now a motivational speaker. Many of them indluding Gustavo Zerbino (other med student) and Adolfo "Fito" Strauch have become long term associates for Stella Maris College in the rugby program. The same one they came from. Javier Methol (man who lost his wife) was a tobacco grower and successful buisness man. Moncho Sabella lives in Argentina and is a successful agriculturalist. A lot of the others have gone into other things including public speaking as has Carlitos Paez (guy whose father was looking for him.) Some trivia: Nando Parrado can be seen in the airport opening the door for his "family" and his portrayer, Agustin Pardella. Roberto Canessa can be seen aiding his film portrayer, Matias Recalt when they get to the hospital after the rescue. Coche Inciarte can be seen directly behind Numa Turcatti actor, Enzo Vogrinzic, in the pub scene with Gaston and Pancho. Ramon Sabella can be seen in the airport as an extra. Carlitos Paez (guy who made the sleeping bag) played his own father, Carlos Paez Vilaro who didn't rest until his son was back safe. Juaquin Turcatti (Numa's actual brother) is seen in the night outside the home Numa grew up in. Those were Numa's actual books he used to study from. Gustavo Zerbino is seen at the beginning as a rugby coach. In summation, this film was made to remember those who died. This is the first time the names of the dead have been used as the relatives of the dead refused to allow their loved ones names to be used in other productions: "Survive" 1976, and "Alive" 1993. This film is a dedication from the living to the dead. It is their voice Numa speaks for.

The guy at the back who told Carlitos to sit down was Carlos Roque, an airforce mechanic. The plane been chartered from the cash strapped Uruguayan airforce. The reason for the crash was pilot error, the pilot miscalculated how far they had flown and turned north too soon. They had not passed Curico, they were in fact still on the Argentine side of the border.

About two years ago I ran into Patton Oswalt on a busy street in downtown Austin, Texas that is. I was on my way to the pisser from waiting in line to see the newfangled dungeons and dragon movie or something like that I think they called it. There was a festival in town with the letter X involved somehow, but I digress. Anyhow, I walk another block and a half to find a commode in what I thought was a merchant of some sort, but I found some sorta coffee shop in the front of what darned look like a banking institution; or at least someplace one would feel mighty underdressed in a bathrobe. My mind wanders. What I mean to say is, it's a mighty fine thing to see you here and I hope to see you 'round these parts again.

Cause at that altitude the fire would not light, cause of the pressure of the air , plus add the humidity…that’s why they praticallly could not have light a fire , not even with the plane fuel!

This is not a remake of that movie. Alive was made a few years after the events and is not entirely liked by the survivors, as it is too idealistic. Society of the Snow is actually based on a book of the same name which was written by a person close to the survivors after long research and interviews with the survivors.
