Come check out the next video in the series! A long day with the SOCOM 16 took a turn for the worse with the magazines causing multiple failures!

As a general rule, 308 is higher pressure than 762 nato. If a rifle is chambered in 308, it should easily handle 762 nato. The opposite might not be the case, however.

A few years back I bought the Socom II and I just had to remove all the railing which added a lot of extra weight. I have taken it in a couple of hog hunts and it has brought down both with one shot. The problem that you encountered most likely is due to the ammo and not the rifle. I had the same problem with the 7.62x51 147 grain bulk ammo. Good video.
@OfficialWhiskey4 ай бұрын
That’s awesome man! I thought about that when making this video because I’m also going on a hog hunt soon and want to take a rifle with good stopping power. It was definitely a combination of the metal mags and needing to be lubricated but the ammo was probably also it. Super reliable rifle and I need to make another video to redeem this one! Thanks for the comment man!

10 years later, I still lose sleep on a great deal. The Fort Bliss PX had a Socom 16 in with a winter camo pattern for $1,400. I want to say it was used but lightly if I can remember the conversation correctly. I still want one, but the price tag is definitely up there.

I’d definitely lose sleep too man, hopefully one day there will be another chance for you, though the price tag is definitely high!

My dealer had a going out of business sale. I went there after they had closed. Gave the husband (Vietnam Vet USMC) & wife hug. Their German Shepard had one more nibble on my leg. The owner told me to go to the back with him. He handed me a box that had a slightly used Socom. Told me make him an offer. $700. Both the wife, husband, and dog have gone to their ranch in the sky. Still got that rifle. Miss them.

A few mods: You can take that picatinny rail off, replace with a regular handguard. Take off the fat front sight and replace with the M1A "Scout" front sight. The "Scout" sight is taller than the standard National Match front sight but is same width (thin) as the National Match sight. Also replace the large rear peep with a standard size or NM peep. Should help with those long range shots.
@michaelford25172 ай бұрын
You can also put a “kick killer“ recoil pad on the rifle to extend the length of pull a little bit. This also reduces the already reduced recoil.

I have an older M1a. I believe 1979. Be aware if you buy an older one late 70's early 80's it could be a grenade. When Springfield started running out of USGI parts they got sloppy. Cast bolts were used on some rifles. Good news is the recall is still active. I bought one few years ago, did some research and contacted Springfield. They replaced barrel and bolt, is good to fire .308 now. They even put my bayonet lug back on😃

Is this a lubrication issue? It looks pretty dry. I'm pretty surprised as I believe it was developed by special operations looking for a CQB version of the M-14. The fact it cant double tap is ridiculous. Nice review, thanks for the honest approach.

A combination of it being dry and the spring in the metal mags, so yes, I typically get sponsored these firearms and was told it was taken care of pre hand, although you see what happened. "Dual chambered" So... normal? I hesitate to say "every", but just about every .308 rifle can shoot 7.62x51. My bolt actions, my M14's (Springfield and Bula), my PTR-91, my FAL... all .308, all eat surplus M80 and European 7.62 like normal. And a max effective range of 400 yards sounds like a shooter issue. 16" barreled .308's can hit 600 yards easy. They're only held back by the sighting system, and the SOCOM comes with a crappy front sight.

Cool video! I own one. Cons? Sure, there may be some minimal cons, but those rounds not cycling isn’t one of em. Not the rifle. Definitely the ammo. You get what you pay for when you buy this rifle. It’s not a competition shooter, although you can turn them into one with some mods.. (The M1A, that is. Not so much the SOCOM with the 16”, obviously.) With this rifle, You pay for a robust battle rifle that’s reliable as hell and one hell of a thumper. That’s what you get. Love my SOCOM16. It’s just fun and cool and pretty practical in the right hands and right situation. Careful if you ever decide to put a can on it. Most often they have some blowback unless you do some very specific modifications. Definitely worth looking into.

Dude there is nothing significant about this rifle handling both .308 and 7.62 they are essentially the same. Any rifle chambered in 308 can shoot both.

Your right 7.62 by 51 an 308 Winchester are the exact same 7.62 by 51 is just the military name
@Halcyon18613 ай бұрын
@@hound_baits Actually they are not the same. 7.62 nato specs is lower pressure, thats why its not called .308
@Game-The-System3 ай бұрын
@@Halcyon1861 Absolutely...however, I'm guessing that is why you typically don't see many 7.62x51 (only) rifles made/sold in the US. In fact, I can't remember EVER seeing one. I'm not even sure military-issue weapons are only 7.62x51 these days. In the civilian market it certainly wouldn't make much sense to do so.
@Game-The-System3 ай бұрын
@@Halcyon1861 Also...there might be a bit of legal/political stuff to do with the differences between NATO designations versus US designations. The 7.62x51 IS .308 as far as measurements and construction, but as you said, NATO designation "allows" for lower pressure, which in-turn requires subtle differences for 7.62x51-only weapons. For example, those cheap M-14 knock-offs from China or Uzbekistan might blow up in your face if you put a .308 round in them 😂
