If you examine your thinking you will find that it is aways 'tainted' by underlying emotions. If you rely on logic alone, you will inevitably end up a nihilist, which is depressing and undesirable. It is therefore important to base your thinking on the right kind of emotions, and be consciously aware of them. Moral thinking has to be grounded in emotions of empathy and compassion for example, for oneself and others.

Why not adopt a ready made, consistent set of principles? I chose Catholicism.

This was your only video, but boy did it make me think. I have been thinking of doing something totally out of the ordinary, and many times I ended up thinking of people's reactions. For a second there I was too caught up in thinking what people would think of me rather than do what's best for me. Thank you for the excellent video.

Thank you James. I've been looking for a clear description of what is meant by that famous sentence. You are finally the first person who has succeeded in giving me a clear answer. Thank you!!!!!👏💥✊

Super, well explained. Can you come up with personal experiences and observations showing how people are living unexamined lives?

How to live a meaningful life according to Socrates?

As much as I agree with your opinion, there is something bugging me. When Socrates suggests that the unexamined life is not worth living, does that mean that those people have no place here? If that is the case, I would have to disagree. People who do not examine their lives would still be useful in our society. They could grow up being told to work and later actually work.

Good, though it does sound like you are embracing a little bit of Epicurean philosophy too. No bad thing in my opinion!

If there is nothing after death, nothing before death has any meaning and if there is no ultimate judge to assess the worth of a person's life then it really doesn't matter how you live since no existence or final judge means that Mother Teresa will fare no better or worse than Adolf Hitler. When the last human has gone the way of the dinosaurs we won't even have History to judge us since there won't be anyone left to read what our history books say. So to say that the un-examined life is not worth living is true but the life that is lived with indifference to it's creator and saviour is not worth examining.

Warren Hicks must every single action be observed and judged to have value? Is it not enough to live? Does humanity need to be remembered to feel worthy of existence however fleeting it may be? Do we need to feel special?

It's the experience of living life itself that is the value.

I feel personally attacked. “An unexamined life, a whimsical life!” I call bullshit. You can absolutely examine your life and try your best to learn grow be self-aware and aware of others and maintain healthy boundaries and have a fun whimsical life as well. I think this guy has a lot to learn
