➡️ Try It Yourself:
All you need is some Aluminum cola/pop cans or pipe, and copper wire or pipes. You can also use Zinc instead of the Aluminum. The more salt or acid you put in the water, the stronger the battery will be but, the faster it will corrode and break down the metals. Please post your results in the comments so we can see your project!
➡️ Helpful Battery Information:
The same principles apply to making and lemon battery or potato battery. You just need two dissimilar metals like copper and aluminum, used in this video, and an electrolyte like sodium (table salt) or Epsom salts, or an acid like lemon juice, vinegar, or other common battery acid. Making your own battery is actually fairly simple. You just need two metals separated buy a thin insulator like paper, or by your electrolyte fluid. Then connect the positive and negative terminals to each metal. The more surface area you have touching the electrolyte or acid, the more amps you get. The more of these cells that you wire together in series, the more voltage you get. 12 volt car batteries for example, have hundreds of thin lead plates inside each cell. Then each cell inside the car battery is wired together in series to increase voltage. Those plates are what hold the charge. Each pole on the battery is connected to the positive or negative end the chain of battery cells, wired in series, inside the battery. Another example is a 9-volt battery used for devices around the home, such as smoke alarms, remote controls for RC cars, walkie talkies, and much more. These 9 volt batteries usually have six cells inside of them that equal about 1.5 volts each to give you the 9 volts required for your device.

THIS IS THE STUFF WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEARNING IN SCHOOL: Demonstrating general chemistry and physics put to practical usage is so much better than the lab experiments they had us doing in our college courses. I have no idea the stuff I was combining nor for what purpose other than it was the curriculum requirement. We had to do these experiments if we wanted to get at least a passing grade in the course.

If you take Washing Soda Na2CO3 you will get at least double of this cell voltage... If you will use Carbon rods from Zinc carbon Batteries instead of the coper spiral you can get 1.3 Volts with Na2CO3 if your can is from Aluminium...

Nice kids project. Tip. All Alu cans are coated inside, rough up the inside of the can with a wire brush on a drill to maximise the alu surface area, increase the copper wire diameter and amount of coils, more copper equals more amps.

Great project! A few improvement suggestions: Get rid of the cardboard. Replace the bottom insulator with something more robust (plastic, plexiglass, etc.). Do not put any insulator around the can at all, that reduces the contact area increasing the battery's internal resistance affecting the amperage the battery can deliver. Sand alone should prevent the shorts from happening. To further reduce internal resistance give the inside of the cans thorough sanding and also make the copper as large of a surface as practicable (eg a few serpentine twists or use foil instead of wire). Cover the cans with lids to reduce electrolyte evaporation. Use a mild acid instead of salt. Good luck.

Hi Bob, thanks for the suggestions. I am wondering .. If we go and use alum foil and copper foil [like a sandwich], would that work ? sounds like the better conditions, bigger surface area all around. Questions : 1. The sand is there to keep the copper from touching the other terminal, right ? It does not involve itself in the chemical reaction, correct ? while the granules allow the liquid and ions to go through to perform the electrical currents ? If all this is correct, then can we use gauze or cotton to separate and make the sandwich ? 2. Is there anything in this being the consumable items ? Eventually the metals will be eaten away ?

Thank you for the comment Bob and for the suggestions! Please Subscribe if you haven't already, I would appreciate your feedback on future projects. I did put some vinegar in later which did seem to increase output to the light, however the cans started getting holes in them shortly after. I should have put them in seal-able plastic containers to prevent evaporation and leaking. Would have keep them running longer.
@SourcePortEntertainment

Hi Kingston, thanks for your comment. Please Subscribe if you haven't already! 1. I just used the sand to hold the copper wire in place. Unless your sand has any acidic or electrolyte properties in it, the sand should not play a role in the chemical reaction. Yes I would think you can use gauze or cotton. As long as the two metals do not touch, which would cause a short. 2. The Aluminum is being consumed in this type of battery. Holes start to appear in the Aluminum cans after several weeks.

Hi Urnaa, thank so much for watching and commenting! More surface area in contact with the saltwater or vinegar would give you more amperage, so more copper wire in the coil inside tthe can should work. The voltage ⚡ you would have to get a different metal probably. Aluminum and Copper only produce up to a certain voltage. Please share my videos and subscribe!

I made these and after about 3 days I had salt water all over ..the salt caused holes the sides of the cans...Made different ones using large plastic jars , galvanized pieces of metal, larger gage copper wire, and epsom salts instead of salt and distilled water . Worked a little better...no leaks.. like batteries with electrolyte of some water mix, the water evaporates and add only distilled water to prevent build up of minerals in tap water. that cause batteries to deteriorate..

Hi Joseph, they stayed lit for a week or two at a time till the cells dried out. Then I just refilled them again and with a bit of water and it would keep running for a few more weeks. It got a little dimmer each time because the electrons were being used up in the chemical to electrical reaction. The holes in the cans are shown in the update video. Could you make a 24amp battery with this? If so how long would it last do you reckon?
@SourcePortEntertainment
@SourcePortEntertainment 5 жыл бұрын
Good question! Thanks for watching 👀 ! I reckon it would last for a few week's depending on how much you use it. If you could make a 24amp battery you would need many plates/sheets of aluminum to increase the surface area enough to produce high amperage. Probably also sheets of copper, which would be expensive. Since my setup was just in series with a single cell in each it was only about 0.5v and a few milliamps for each cell. If you would like to try a larger version I would love to see your results. Please share and subscribe, and keep me informed if you do try it. - Danny

Hello, may I have the list of materials used per can, I need it urgently. As well I input you on our acknowledgement on my research paper.
@SourcePortEntertainment
@SourcePortEntertainment 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hokage, Of course I would be happy to. Per can there is one aluminum soda can (lightly sanded with sand paper), one round cardboard insulator for the bottom of the can, one thin sheet of cardboard insulator to wrap around the inside of the can, about 6-8 inches of 12 gauge copper wire wrapped into a coil, and one soda can full of play sand, a salt water to fill the can until sand is fully saturated. Then smaller gauge lead wires to connect copper coil from one can (cell) to aluminum can of the next cell, all the way down the chain. By the end you should have one small wire on the copper coil of the first cell and one wire on the aluminum can of the last cell. Please let me know if you have any other questions and please SHARE and SUBSCRIBE! - Danny

Hi Alan, thanks for commenting. That is great your son tested this out. If it was an LED light he will want to make sure he tries the positive and negative both ways LEDs only work in one direction. The reason for the coil is just to get more copper surface area in contact with the electrolyte. Better amperage that way. Could Be twisted too but more copper in contact with the salt water solution is what is needed. Thanks for the comment. Please share and subscribe!

How manny Diy Soda Can Battery need in order to power up an Dc motor..?
@SourcePortEntertainment
@SourcePortEntertainment 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the DC motor and the volts/amps needed to run it. If you have a small 1.5v DC motor you would need at least 3 (0.5v) cells to meet the voltage requirement. It would probably spin fairly slowly with only a few milliamps that the cells are running at. Please share and subscribe!

I'm following this tutorial for a project, and I was just wondering, would rice work as a substitute for the sand? Also, would the voltage increase if I used an acid like lemon juice or vinegar instead of salt water?
@SourcePortEntertainment
@SourcePortEntertainment 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Liana, I think rice should work just fine, since I'm just using it in this video to separate the copper from the aluminum further. If you used an acid like lemon juice or vinegar it will give you more amperage not necessarily More Voltage. Make sure you lightly sand the inside of the cans before you fill them. Also make sure you put some kind of plastic container or water bottle around each can, to prevent leaking your electrolyte out all over. They will degrade faster if you use a stronger acid like lemon juice or vinegar. Please let me know your results. Thank you for watching and commenting please share and subscribe!

What if you mix half of the sand with soda can pull tabs (sanded down if applicable) randomly distributed throughout the inside of the can? How about if you crush full size cans with a can crusher and layer them in with the sand, and if it makes a difference, have the copper coil through each layer in spirals working from the outside-in then going through the middle of the next aluminum can disc then spiraling out, repeat.

The copper wired inside the battery is a 12 gauge standard electrical wire you can get at any hardware store. The smaller wire to connect the battery cells is I think a 24-26 gauge wire from inside and old broken HDMI cable that I had laying around. Gauge of the wire isn't important since it its very low voltage and low amperage.

That's called a earth battery, you can sink rods in the ground . you have to have the same thing, you have to have copper rods and tin rods. but yes you can't stick them in the ground and get power . but you will get nowhere near the same amount of power as you will get out of building a battery the way he just built one ... but there are people that build earth batteries . (low power) but I think myself it takes up way too much land space, too many rods to be worth anything. because you will get very low power from the earth battery.

Could you scale this big enough to power a house?

Hey Brent, thanks for watching and commenting! A rechargeable Lead Acid battery 🔋 would be a better choice. A copper aluminum battery, would be very expensive for the copper to build a battery big enough to support a house. Please share and subscribe!

Hello are you the one did all the research to this soda can as organic battery?
@SourcePortEntertainment

Hi Maryann, I can't claim to be the first person to do research on a Soda Can Battery but, yes I did a lot of research on Aluminium/Copper batteries and other types before starting this project. I chose this one because it was the safest and didn't use harsh chemicals. If you like please share and subscribe!

Hi should the copper wire touch the can?
@SourcePortEntertainment
@SourcePortEntertainment 2 жыл бұрын
It should Not touch the can. You need to keep the two metals separated from each other by your electrolyte fluid (and sand in this setup). That creates the difference electrons in the two surfaces that makes the electric charge. Thank you for the question, please Share and Subscribe!
