My husband was the first drummer shown when the Drums and Pipes of the Gordon Highlanders started to play, Ian wasn't very tall so he had to stand on something for the cameraman to get the shot. Ensign Ewart from the Scots Greys captured the French standard during the battle and was at his death buried on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, when in the 1960's the people of Nova Scotia in Canada gifted a new surface for the esplanade all the tombs were moved for safety, my father William Abercrombie had the honour of driving the excavator that gently lifted Ewarts coffin to go to a place of safety. Notice the lightning flashes outside the windows. There was a severe thunderstorm that night. Which made the ground so muddy that Napoleon had to delay bringing up his artillery the next day. This gave Wellington time to move his army to a more favorable position.

Why the censorship? At about 35 secs the Duchess explains how she chose the Highland officers who she wanted to dance. Her daughter turns to her and says “mama, you chose all the big ones.” (!) Mum hushes her daughter by putting her finger on the latter’s lips. Why has that few seconds worth of the movie been deleted?

March 2024... anyone can say me what is the hymn Scottish men are playing while leaving? This movie is a real masterpiece.

I just read book by Simon Lewis. Seems this is the man on 0:57 was not a Gordon Highlander, nor was he Scot, he was New Zealander, and he was cast for the role because of his looks. He coudn't dance, hence he is shown only from waist up, they tried to teach him but it didn't help. Of course all other dancers were Gordon Highlander, actual soldiers, and the were forbidden from travelling to Ukraine, but this New Zealander actor did travel to there and spent several months there, waiting for his scene to be shot - where he is marching and singing
