Too soon to say Kenin is faded or something like that. Rybakina is on fire this season. She has won 15 matches and only lost 3 until now I think Kenin is just exhausted, she should keep a rest and show an incredible performance like in Australian Open By the way, these two girls are future of WTA. They are going to become big names this decade

I know that the "1 hit wonder topic" is very common in WTA these days but honesty loosing to Rybakina is somewhat expected, or at least not surprising, if you analyze some data. Rybakina has played 3 finals and won one of them in 2020, her record is 16W 3L, she has defeated players like Mertens, Sakkari, Siniakova and now Kenin so her level is basically top 10 just that her ranking still doesn’t reflect it.

Not that surprised with this result. Kenin has played a lot of tennis on the big stage lately with AO win and Fed Cup victory. To face a top 20 player in the first round of Dubai after all that is a tall order and she's probably a little fatigued physically and mentally. Rybakina is on a hot streak and looks to be another big contender in the women's game so it's nothing to be ashamed of to lose to her.

Okay but are we surprised Kenin lost on the first round of a follow up tournament after her AO championship win? No. Most women don’t play consistent enough for those kind of results. I am not talking down on the WTA, but can anyone name someone who’s been able to win titles back to back or have great results in follow up tournaments after big wins? The Dubai tournament did a great job pairing first round matches, and this one was a big test for Kenin. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kenin didn’t try %100. It makes me think once they win a grand slam, do they just not try hard enough? Lack of motivation? Or as fans, do we expect a lot from our favorite players? Tennis is a physical and mental sport - it’s not easy!
@footfault19414 жыл бұрын
This is an upset, but not an ordinary one! Rybakina was a finalist shortly before this tournament in St. Petersburg (while winner Bertens skipped). Kenin's victory in 2 would have been excused ... was a scenario. All credit to this younger by 1 year Kazakhstan! She's rather a slow starter. If survived in the 2nd set, she becomes ready for a battle. Well done! Bits sloppy, lackluster performance by Kenin was obvious on occasions. For some reason, her tension or focus dropped on her service game. Capable of managing the situation, but dangerous & her opponents would pounce them. Beginning of long rivalry? Take care, for working really hard since last week!

Next part of Sofia Kenin's development is her mental approach to the game. She plays like one under pressure, almost robotic at times and also without the enjoyment. This switch in her approach will put the pressure on her opponents while she enjoys taking them to the cleaners, a bit like a cat that nibbles at the tail of a mouse without going for the kill. Can't wait to see her making this gear shift!!!

I saw some of Rybakina in her recent previous matches in St. Petersberg. She seems to have a strong serve (almost a female version of smooth sampras like) and a great backhand weapon. Of late, women's tennis has become a joke. The good old days - the dominance of Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and consistent performances of Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Jana Novotna, Arantxa Sanchez. Followed by the early 2000's - Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati, Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters.

The level of women tennis has never been higher. That is the reason Serena will most likely never win another slam.
@yl89174 жыл бұрын
@@toms9864 Well, that's one way of looking at it. Optimistic, for sure. The level of tennis is so high that a qualifier could defeat the number 1 seed or an in form grand slam champion in the first round. We have seen it over and over again in the last couple of years. All I stated was the dominance of the WTA players back in the 90's and 2000's when top players performed consistently throughout the year. On the subject of Serena Williams, She is 38, back from child birth, made 4 Grand Slam finals since. Won the AO while still pregnant. Yes, she may never win a slam again but you cannot take away her accomplishments, skills on the court - talent, mental toughness. I'm not her biggest fan but it is undeniable that she is fantastic for the sport.

Yes she won over a weaker Serena, but at the AO she seemed to have had a lot of luck in two matches with intimidated opponents i.e. Barty & Murgurza. SaturnDirect it’s not about wanting to see a couple of people dominate. I understand tough matches between the top 20 players. It’s exciting. It’s great for the game. But that really isn’t the case. Qualifiers/ players out of the top 50/100 are able to defeat recent grand slam champions. Kenin isn’t an exception. We have seen it happen to many of the players. They win a slam or a title and lose in the first round the next one. Even if they get to quarters or semis shows consistency. But sadly that is not how it is.

WTA really sucks. After winning your maiden GS title,you are defeated in the first round of the following tournament.
