That was so informative, thank you for sharing. I've been thinking about making more than just jewellery; this is the perfect place to see what can be made. I worry about the stickiness of the clay, and in exploring ways to combat that I've found Baby powder to be effective, plus it has a very faint fragrance which is quite pleasant. I've not heard of the other clay you mentioned, perhaps it is not available over here in the UK.

Awesome video! A lot of techniques, thank you for them! Could you, please, give an advise about painting? When you use acrylic paints is it possibility to avoid scratches on your sculpture? I carefully cover my sculpture with one-two layer of acrylic paint, wait until it dry and then finish it with varnish , but result is always the same- if I scratch it by my nail a little bit harder the paint peels off. It is important for me because I try to make jewelries and need to be sure that they will be during okay during skin contact. Thanks in advance!

What an excellent video - my daughter is interested in making anime characters and I had no idea that polymer clay existed...this is a whole new world of making for her. And a technical Q from me...if you were making a large piece, as in too big for the oven, is there a way to harden the clay using a heat gun? Or would you make individual pieces, bake them and then connect them together somehow?
@Rukiisdb3st
@Rukiisdb3st 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Sofia, thank you for this video. I am wondering about these little black things you added on your sculpture, are they made of some plastic? You said that you bake them together with the pre-baked clay? I am really scared of putting other materials on to the oven, fearing it might damage the oven, or something might explode. xD What materials do you think would be safe? Thank you again!

Another excellent paint to use is oils. I MUCH prefer water soluble oils, with no solvents to deal with. You can get some great washes from them and because the paint is applied thin it dries within a day or two, usually overnight. You can make some great color blends and you don’t have to worry about paint drying before wiping off.

I might have to spend time carving in polymer clay begrudgingly because i'm making color swatches and wanted to put label stickers on the backs of the baked clays, even tried testing it to see if the adhesive might turn my clays sticky after a month..... 2 months later checking on it and the damn thing wasn't even attacked to it >.> I don't know if sticker labels generally don't stay adhered to polymer clay. My new plan might be to carve the names of the colors on the back, then paint the area in white like i wanted with the white plain stickers and then adding black paint in the cervices of the carved bits to make it look like i have a label on the back with black words. I liked the look of the sticker idea also it was more convenient..... Oh well. Also the other problem i discovered with my sticker idea is i wrote in black pen ink on the stickers and noticed on one of my baked pieces a bit of pen ink transferred on to one of my baked clays i guess from it being pressed up to a loose sticker in the same bag. So i also have to test to see if pen ink will transfer to polymer clay if a label is pressed against another clay piece. The ink wasn't wet, i gave them 24hrs to dry before rehandling the stickers because pen ink tends to smear, so i know the ink was dry but some of it still transferred on to one of my baked swatches.

Is the newer firm cosclay as soft? I've been using Cosclay and I like it a lot compared to sculpey, but I did notice it was softer than medium sculpey. Too much breakage on small things with Sculpey pushed me towards cosclay.
@SofiaBue
@SofiaBue 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I've gradually been incorporating CosClay for the same reason! The "Medium-Firm" is certainly better, but still a bit softer and more sticky than Sculpey Medium. They work perfectly together though!

One thing that I have seen in another artist's video that you may find helpful... don't water down acrylics with water because it will actually mess up their ability to bind properly. This is fine at first, but will lead to eventual flaking and fading of the paint. Instead, they said airbrush medium is great to water down acrylics with and it won't cause the binders in the paint to fall apart. Anyway, your alien spring onion was gorgeous and thanks for the tips. Can you explain "pre-baking" please?

So if my clay is getting sticky while sculpting I can add corn starch? Also can you please show us how you paint with alcohol inks?
@BioClone

better use baby oil, using corn will make clay to be less adhesive with itself, and abusing may lead to cracks on the oven. *make it sure you mix it fine before adding more and more oil, it can get "too soft" or "too sticky" if is abused (however, usually you can fix it to a degree by using paper below, so it can absorb the excesive oil the clay may not be able to hold.
