If you go to an aircraft museum like Planes of Fame in Chino, you'll see pans of cat litter under the engines of many of the aircraft on display specifically to catch the oil leaking out of the engines of the runners. I can't prove it without doing a ton of research, but I suspect that, like the SR-71 that leaked fuel until it got to speed and the airframe heated up, the engines were designed to be more oil-tight when at operating temperature and the components expanded a bit, and when cold, the seals were less tight.
@stanislavczebinski994
@stanislavczebinski994 15 күн бұрын
@@seanmalloy7249 I'm no expert for this kind of engines - but I think you're spot on. Generally, all measurements inside an ICE are dimensioned to warm condition. This is why a warmed-up engine has (basically) no wear - whilst a cold one has plenty. For the same reason, buying a car with super-low milage always holds the danger of getting a (very, very worn) short-trip car. The actual wear is multiple times higher than the indicated milage. A high-milage on the other hand is almost impossible to reach only on a cold engine. Once it's warmed up - no more wear. This is what you want. Those engines run with a little bit of care until forever and a day. Therefore, 200,000km on the clock can be much, much better than 40,000km. I used to own a 2003 Seat Ibiza (basically, a VW Polo - but a lot less ugly) with the trusty old 1,9L TDI Diesel engine. Bought it with 205,000km - scrapped it 5 years later with 255,000 - as it was easier than selling it. Emission laws and stuff. The turbo started to lose top-end power - but it was still the first one. The engine itself was still perfect. Very smooth at idle for that kind of Diesel - basically no oil consumption.

Great video Sofi! Informative and entertaining. Never realized how tall the hull is on the ram/kangaroo. I can see why the crew was upset when the powers that be eliminated the side hatch. Good thing fuel and oil was cheap and plentiful and cheep in 1942! (God bless Texas and Oklahoma!!!!) And of course it is always good to hear a fellow connoisseur sing the praises of the Sherman Tank. I’m sure we could be great pals!👍🤣👍

This is great! This is an interesting APC, because most of the period were comparatively lightly armored. Plus, conversions and repurposed vehicles interesting to me because there are always challenges involved from a design standpoint. The pilot model's turret and upper hull casting was produced in the US by General Steel Castings and later they aided the set up of Canadian production. Montreal Locomotive Works was chosen to make the new Canadian M.3 Cruiser Tank. MLW was a subsidiary of the American Locomotive Company, which had experience in producing large castings and Alco was producing cast hulls for the M3 Medium. Most critically the Ram's Continental engine and transmissions were available only in the USA and these were always in short supply.

Early radial engines leaked oil, but it was not a big deal. Thats why pilots wore goggles and post flight you could see a contrast after doffing headgear. Oil was cheap and plentiful, but as aircraft flew faster, further and inverted, engines had to change to capture the oil so distance was not oil limited. Kudos to you Sofi for cranking that beast, not easy for anyone. Consider what it was like under fire! Cheers!

I'm sure there are such companies in Canada or the States that could do such work for a very reasonable price.
