A video I'd be interested in would be a comparison between umbrella with front diffusion as used here and an umbrella softbox (basically the same thing but the light mounts at the back and shoots through). I'd imagine the umbrella gives softer less directional light due to more bounce and the umbrella softbox is not quite as soft and more directional. But would be interesting to see an actual comparison.

Concerning you poll about editing: You are good edjucator. If you can do both phootography and editing video, do so. However, If you have chosse one or the other, I strongly would prefer you contining to do photography videos.

Excellent demonstration on how to use umbrellas and diffusers to get very good results when that's all we have. Sometimes I forget I still have mine. If I may suggest, could you add an explanation why you always fire your flash before measuring when you decrease the power. I know we do this to empty the accumulator (or condenser maybe) that was filled in after the last flash, but I'm sure not everybody knows that.

I only own one strobe with an umbrella and diffuser can I use a reflector as a kicker to fix up shadows ?
@MarkWallaceVideos
@MarkWallaceVideos Ай бұрын
A reflector will never be brighter than the source of the light, so you won't be able to create the same type of highlights that I created in this photo. But - you can open shadows and do some interesting things with a reflector. A silver reflector is going to reflect more light than a white reflector. You could even try using a mirror to add some highlights. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aN15h9eozqnPdIk.htmlsi=dxCZCh15LMewZrie

Hi Mark, In one of your video you have explained about meaning of “Stop” in exposure. There you have mentioned 1 Stop open/Up means double light entering and 1 Stop close/down means 1/2 the light. My question is - does this theory work while changing the power value of studio strobe? Example:- Say I have 500 watt mono light and at power 10 that light is producing 500 watt of light. Does this mean if the value is changed to 9 that light will produce 250 watt of light? Let me have your clarification on this matter.

It depends on the brand of flash. They don’t all use the same numbering system. But, generally speaking, going up or down one complete number is usually a stop. But you’ll have to check your manual to be sure. Also - not all flashes are created equal. Some are much more accurate than others. A Profoto head is going to be accurate to 1/10 stop while an Alien Bee fluctuates from flash to flash. Quality matters

@@MarkWallaceVideos Yes please make a tutorial video on it. This will definitely help photographer who are planning to buy strobe for their work. People easily gravitate towards cheaper brand strobe simply because of shoe string, but what they are actually loosing they would understand from that video. Looking forward of your future video.

@@MarkWallaceVideos Thanks for the explanation. This helped me to verify my understanding about stop. I use Profoto D2, then definitely this formula will work. Thanks for your time.

A white umbrella (instead of silver) could help. Or, you could just shoot without the diffusion panel. You'd get very similar results. If shiny skin is an issue, some powder on the skin might help, or just a bit of extra post-production to clean things up. There's also the option of using a large softbox, octobox, etc. Use what you have, and you can reproduce these results.

@@MarkWallaceVideos It doesn't look very elegant, but some plain white shower curtain cut to size and held in place with hook and loop. Or a diffusion panel. Don't tell Gavin Hoey, he might stick stuff to the panel for "interesting" effects.
