Apart from being essential for a dogs care, the style of grooming your pet is largely a matter of choice. Some owners prefer a shorter haired dog, others like to stay with the 'shaggy dog' look. When our videos were published we tried to provide a variety of techniques for owners to follow, but also realised that a Wheaten coat can be styled in many ways according to how an owner feels able to maintain it. So if preference is for hair over the fall to be short then please be careful with trimming, as the eyelashes protect the eyes from the fall hair and if cut, take a long time to regrow. An alternative would be to take the hair from the side of the face, leaving an 'thinner' cover over the eyes, but together with the more 'traditional style'.

I think that the important factor for you is does your dog have the eyelashes of Wheaten, or does he have no eyelashes as in a Black Lab? If eyelashes are there and strong, then it is these which will keep the hair around his eyes supported and allow the sort of 'ventilation' which your vet suggests. It would be wrong for me to make further comment on your Vet's point about sunlight on eyes, as we are not Vets, However have a look at this video on the link which deals with eyelashes and although this shows a puppy, it may be that you can compare with your dog 's eyelashes and surrounding hair with that of the pup being groomed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icVjlLF-prOvl6s.html

H Lesley, it seems as though you have a big task on your hands. So, if the coat is really matted it would be best not to trim to the skin, use either scissors (see our other videos), or if you have clippers then use a 10 ora 30 blade with a comb attachment (most important), this is to stop the blades cutting to the skin. Also a 3&3/4" blade, without a comb would leave about 1/2 inch of hair all over the dog, which should be sufficient to disentangle any matting to the coat. After this, look at our 'How to comb a Wheaten' video on our website, this will give a good start to one of the most important tasks of Wheaten care. Good luck

UK banned tail docking in 2007 (but with some exceptions) and you may be surprised how many countries have a complete ban on tail docking. Check it out on Wikepedia.

It's unnecessary mutilation which should be illegal everywhere. When some dogs with intact tails start doing well in shows in the US, perhaps breeders will stop the docking.

We've learned that this is actually unnecessary and cruel. Even some states in the U.S. are trying to get it banned here. This is our 4th SCWT and our first with her tail. It's adorable.
