Soft Questions? Larry King Explains His Interview Style

Larry King has been maligned with the criticism that he's too soft on his interview subjects, and that his questions are too simple. But what's his take on this? Why does he ask the questions he asks in the way he does? How would he handle an interview with someone like Osama bin Laden?
Cenk Uygur asks Larry King about his notable interview approach and much, much more on TYT Interviews: • The Legend, Larry King...

It's not exactly that his questions are soft, it's just that he has a very disarming method. He doesn't put the people he's interviewing on the spot, he lets them get comfortable, then he lets them talk. That sort of method is rarely seen, but extremely effective. I kind of wish I saw that technique from more interviewers.

I used to watch Larry's show every evening it aired when I was a teenager. The education was way better than what public school offers. Thank you Larry, for the years of hard work and critical thinking. While others my age were filling their mind with ABC, FOX, Nickelodeon, and Sci Fi entertainment, I was glued to your show. I miss you old school intellectual journalists.

It was always to "for kids" for me. Let's just say "Silence of the Lambs", "Excalibur" and "Aliens" were my favorite movies when I was 8. Repercussions and consequences of being an 80s baby raised by a WW2 vet / retired Houston TX school district administrator - grandfather.

"someone's gotta do it", "that's how life works", "if I don't do it, someone else will", .... there are so many ways people have found to convince their own sense of morality, that what they do is alright to do, it couldn't possibly fit in one youtube-comment. I think you are completely right with your comment.

It's not the questions that get em speaking, it is the long awkward silences in between. Make them feel safe, then pause slightly too long between questions. When they finish speaking, pause slightly longer than is comfortable for them, the red light is on, they know they are on air, they will blurt out whatever is on their mind, even if they don't want to, because silence is not golden, silence is uncomfortable.

That's good advice for a witness giving court testimony as well. When asked a question, take all the time you want to answer. Cops, too. When asked a question, reply "What do you mean by that" "Why are you asking that question". This puts them off. You get a slight advantage by being the interrogator
@dangerouslytalented

***** In such situations, silence is always your friend. If you can tolerate it, you can get anything out of the person you are interviewing, or if you are the one being interrogated, if you are able to tolerate silences, you are suddenly in control.

dangerouslytalented For some reason, this brings me back to a quote from The Notebook book "...Silence is holy. It draws people together because only those who are comfortable with each other can sit without speaking. This is the great paradox.” I've never really found silence uncomfortable, so I guess I'd kill in one of these interviews!
@dangerouslytalented

debeastdueeast ah yes, but you don't know the psychology of the studio, where time is money, and silence brings dull tv and you don't want to be considered as "dull". Everybody is watching...

I hear people in the comment section saying Larry is describing how Cenk interviews people.. but that isn't true, you can't compare his regular broadcast to interviews he does with people.. Cenk may seem like a hot head when he's talking about something hes passionate about, but he's always respectful of the people around him.. I mean you can tell by how he treats people when they do the little court thing when everyone vote to get a verdict on a topic. there is a time and place for everything and I think Cenk handle him self appropriately according to each situation. I liked this interview, I hope they get more people on here to interview.

Interesting and great interview. It's really nice that TYT's exploring and showing us a side of old media like Larry King and CNN. And instead of just being aggressive and using the interview as a chance to stroke their ego, really letting us see what kind of person Larry King is and what his motivations are. I think the point Larry King's making is that if you ask specific questions, or rather, spout off talking points, you're just going to get talking points back. In the end, you're just going to get something like Crossfire. The audience doesn't really learn anything. By getting the interviewee to get their guard down and emotional, Larry King at least gives the audience the chance to judge the character of the interviewee. Even if the interviewee ultimately takes advantage of the vague questions and spouts off talking points, the audience would be in a position to judge if that answer was genuine or not.

I'd rather Cenk's style. Criminal politicians have the privilege of avoiding tough questions that hold them accountable for their decisions and highlight their hypocrisy. Larry King has set a journalistic standard of not following up on questions that the interviewee has avoided

Great point. The best example of King not following up I remember is when he had Netanyahu on years ago. It was when he was foreign minister. King asks about why the Israeli security services detain young men without charge or trial for extended periods. Netanyahu response was "well we have to protect ourselves from 'potential criminals'. King never follows up this bullshit answer. Everyone on earth is a potential criminal.

What an interesting clash of opinions. Subtlety vs. Accountability, they are both trying to get the guests to be honest, but Larry King realizes that's impossible and "hard" questions lead to less insightful interviews. Cenk realizes this but recognizes the need for the media to keep people accountable for their actions and sees his job primarily as a watchdog, even though that may lead to some guests becoming defensive or refusing to come on his program. The part about Osama Bin Laden really explained Larry King's philosophy, that a gentle approach in his mind is ultimately more beneficial and insightful.

I understand what Larry is saying here and I don't necessarily think his interview style is soft.. he understands that vague, open ended questions gets the interviewee to start speaking candidly and let down their guard. It's actually a really good strategy. My only issue w/ Larry King is this: he does very little to zero prep before sitting down with the interviewee. He has made himself look very foolish several times in high profile interviews. Watch the Debra Tate interview where he asks her about her relationship with Roman Polanski after he murdered her sister (he very clearly did not). Or when he basically outted a congressman on live TV. He asked Lady Gage if she "had Lupus or something" (she didn't). IMO the worst one was the Jerry Seinfeld interview. Just go watch it. Watch all of them. He makes himself look like a complete fool on a frequent basis. A little pre-show prep would go a long way.

You guys do great work Cenk. I would hope you guys can be more self-aware in your ideological battle with crazies. As a small but telling example, one of your criticisms of O'Reilly in his most recent Presidential interview (and in a lot of his interviews) is "some people say" or "some people might say" before launching into a criticism. I trust you know you did the same thing in trying to challenge Larry King by leading with "critics might say". C'mon, *you're* saying it.

I disagree with his point about evil people to a degree. People like Sylvia Browne, who were on record mocking their gullible customers behind the scenes, knew full well they were pulling a gigantic scam to get rich exploiting the uneducated, superstitious and credulous. There's simply no way someone doing that can think "this is normal, I'm a decent person, I do what I really believe is best".
