Do you have trouble starting soft notes at the frog? How about changing bow at the frog, especially with a slow bow? Once you learn my technique for soft starts, you'll do these things easily and reliably, even under pressure!

Very well described, my fingers are so shaky just trying to use a computer mouse, it's a wonder I can play violin at all! haha. The small light motions are so much more difficult! It gets worse with age too; my father has a slight difficulty even signing a check without a little wobble. But it's nice to know I am not uniquely deficient is this regard, Thanks Mr. Cole:)

The violin can also be raised with the gentle up motion of the chest through an inhale, or the dropping of the chin weight naturally on the chin rest ; they will both support the violin before the bow change. Mr Cole, can you comment a bit on those alternatives? You video is immensely helpful!

Thank you so much for this video! Btw is it necessary to play exactly at the top of your finger? :/
@natesviolin

I don't quite understand the question. Are you talking about the fingers of the left hand? And do you mean the finger tips?
@CMARIEViolin
@CMARIEViolin 7 жыл бұрын
Oh lol pardon me. Yeah the left hand. Is it really a requirement to play exactly at the tip of the left hand? :)

No, that will depend on the length of the fingers. In general, longer fingers will tend to be more comfortable away from the fingertip; shorter fingers closer to the fingertip. But in general, fingertip placement can help with flexibility for vibrato, and for helping the fingers to curve properly.

I think we need strengthen pinky at first. as you know, pinky alleviate the bow weight. right? If your pinky is weak, you probably can't make soft because bow weight is alleviated by strong pinky.

Amazing video! Would this technique also work at the tip?
@natesviolin
@natesviolin 8 жыл бұрын
+Jonah Poplove It would! Although at the tip, the relatively little weight (or interference) from the arm usually means that changes are smoother there. If you have bumps in a bow change there, make sure that you're not altering anything about the arm or hand as you change direction.

Thanks Nathan! I find bow changes at the tip to be a lot easier than at the frog. What I find particularly difficult is the 'soft start' at the tip. I tried your trick for the down bows and it works amazingly! When I need to start a passage up-bow at the tip softly, I often find my bow bouncing around before I can settle it onto the string. Any suggestions you have would be very much appreciated!
@natesviolin
@natesviolin 8 жыл бұрын
+Jonah Poplove For that, there are a few things to look at... first of all, don't try to "finesse" it too much. As long as your weight is balanced by the little finger of the bow hand, you can place the bow at the tip with decision. If you try to hover over the string much, it will shake. Also, do you drink caffeine? If so, it can be a factor! Lastly, you might want to think of the entire right arm as one unit. Move it as one.

Thanks Nathan! I try to stay away from coffee, much as I love it. I have an essential tremor in my hands and it once almost moved me to quit playing! Beta blockers help, but often it's still too darn hard to place my bow gently at the tip. I change my bowings to accommodate, but I will still keep searching for a way to start pianissimo at the tip!
@natesviolin
@natesviolin 8 жыл бұрын
+Jonah Poplove If you haven't seen my video on bow shakes you may want to view that as well. At the tip you can tilt the bow to make it easier to place quietly.
