Great test! I feel like the lack of difference while driving is a clear indication that the sound isn't due to the material of the top but due to the poor road noise/vibration/aero of the wrangler. I think that another test you should conduct that people should be aware of is how well the soft top contains noise. In other words, if you play music in the soft top and at the same volume in the hard top, I am willing to bet a few bucks that someone outside the car, whether on the street or sitting in traffic, is going to have a harder time hearing that music.

Hey JI - this is not a criticism, but just a note. I did this test in my car last week (a Nissan Rogue) 70dB at 70mph. I noticed that when I put my phone in the holster which is located in the front air vent just like where yours is, the reading went up to 75dB. When I held the phone closer to the seat, or left the phone on my lap, the reading went down by 4dB. I believe that 70dB is a more realistic representation of what the interior noise is like in my car simply because I don't drive with my ear next to the air vent/near the windshield. Just thought I'd mention it here for reference.

I run both and the times I see that the soft top is significantly louder than the hard top is during rain or driving through a tunnel. Other than that though, you are spot on with your tests, it’s really not that much louder most of the time.

How about a test between a hardtop with mopar headliner and one without. Is the Mopar healiner really worth $500 option? Does it reduce noise at all? (The headliner should help stereo accoustics, but that would be harder to measure than just overall noise level) Thanks!

Excellent work! Makes me reconsider soft top. My biggest problem is if I ever want to switch to a hard top later on, you have to get the hard top wire kit and replace buttons on dash and steering wheel. I wish the soft tops sold with option including pre-wired hard top wiring. (Also, my biggerst gripe with soft tops are the plastic rear window. I wish someone made a plexiglass hard rear windo insert as option) One other key point i have noticed driving several Wranglers (both soft and hard tops)going back to 1993, the soft top is much louder than a hard top when passing other cars/trucks. The road noise is much higher during these times. Also, having owned a 2007 JK (over 11 years now) that came originally with soft top, I can attest to how -- as a soft top ages and stretches (and tears) over a decade -- it gets much louder! A nice new tight soft top will be much louder in a few years. A hardtop stays consistently quiet as it ages. Also, was the test of the hard top noise level done on the same road and on the same day as the soft top test? Or did you use the previous hardtop noise test from a week earlier? That would change the variables if you did not drive hard top on the same day in same weather conditions that you drove soft top in. Great work, thanks!

Now.....test one with active noise cancellation (2.0 turbo with Alpine upgrade) vs one without. Cuts a bit of that noise out.

My dilemma is choosing the hard or soft top. As well as how much colder the soft top is compared to the hard top. Also in Southeast Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia , it doesn't get terribly cold for a long time. Durability is something I wonder about too. I'm paranoid someone will try and cut into the top of they want to get inside the jeep.

Hi Brandon, first off great videos. I will purchasing a 2022 Jeep pretty soon. I have been flip flopping between hardtop and soft top. After watching the water test and road noise between the 2, you have me leaning towards the premium soft top. Just curious if you will be having any updated videos between the tops again. Nice review! It makes me reconsider the soft top! The only issue I have is that I live in New England and in the the hardtop with the glass rear window defrost and wiper is best for snow etc but you can’t get that open air feel in the warmer weather. Decisions! Wish someone made a glass rear window with wiper/defrost for the soft top.

My hard top is very noisy at 75 MPH. But apparently as of July 2018 the soft tops are still not available to purchase separately. Sigh....

I have less wind noise with the soft top but more noise from other cars at really low speeds with the soft. All that is moot, soft tops for life.

You need to compare a JK softop now to see how much, if any, louder it is to JL. Now is the time to do test while JKs are still new from factory. I bet the jk softop is significantly louder than JL Thanks!

Were you using the premium soft top or the standard soft top?

Love your vids and the info... I also understand that the JL is the "flavor du jour"...but there are still a lot of JKs out there, new and used. Any chance of doing some of these for the JK?

I’m making this comment without watching the end of the video. I’ve driven both the premium top and the standard top. The premium top is much quieter. I two big mistakes getting my JL is not getting the premium top and not getting the alpine stereo upgrade.

Honestly, I don’t know why the hard tops are such a popular item. Part of the thrill of having a Jeep, is being able to quickly take down the top. That simply cannot be done with a hard top. Soft top all day long baby. Sure, some savage can cut open the window, but then again, a glass window can easily be shattered to get into the Jeep as well. So many vehicle burglaries in big cities, and virtually all involve vehicles with typical glass windows.

Yeah my hardtop reads about the same DB level...been looking at ways to quiet it down some with no luck thus far. Think it's just an aerodynamic issue.

Ok another soft top question. The plug for the rear windshield washer and fluid get popped out with the required holder when raising soft top. Same for you??

Any chance of a comparison between the Twill and Sailcloth soft tops?

My soft top comes in today. Do you drive top on and windows out? I haven’t seen any demonstrations that just show that option. I’m sure you can. Did it with jk all the time. .

Just picked up a 2020 Willys with a hard top. It has moderate off road tires and is loud AF on the highway. It has the shitty stock sound system in it, but I was thinking it might not even be worth upgrading. There is so much road noise in it, I am on the fence about spending 2 - 3k on an upgraded sound system. Does anyone have any input?
