Not at 2,300 fps. At velocities that are 1/2 or close to a 1/3 of this then the engineering and construction into the hollow point design becomes more important and adds cost.

@@jaredevildog6343 yes Yeet. If it seats, it yeets. It's a saying in AK forums which aren't picky like folks are with 5.56. 7"-20" barrel length of 7.62x93, folks aren't picky. If it loads into the chamber and fires, get it. Life's better when simple.

@@ToolsandTargets I have never seen any muzzle velocities at the 2500 fps level with that cartridge. I have TWO AR-15s that are both chambered in the 7.62×39 SOVIET. One, (COLT) has a 16 inch barrel. The other has a DPMS 20 inch barrel on a HESS lower. Even my 20 inch does not reach 2500 fps with 123 gr bullets. (The 20 inch IS a bit "flatter shooting" out to 200-300 yards.) One MIGHT be able to reach that with a bit lighter bullet.🤔 For an aspiring reloader, it might be worth a try.
@lestergillis8171
@lestergillis8171 Жыл бұрын
@@ur_asian_milfoil That has not been my experience with their 7.62×39 123gr steel case SOVIET ammo. I bought considerable quantities many years ago. It is my understanding that S&B no longer makes that cartridge in the steel (disposable) case version. If you are shooting the 233 or 5.56NATO cartridge, it COULD be a different story as both of my AR-15s use the SOVIET cartridge. This much I DO know about steel case ammo, (no matter who makes it) if one fires at a fast enough repetition rate to get the barrel hot, the lacquer coating begins to soften & ultimately melt inside the chamber. This will turn into a gooey-sticky mess.

@@ur_asian_milfoil Sound a little whiney lol. Their ammo doesn't work in your rifle, an THEY wouldn't deal with it. Wth is that suppose to mean, what were they suppose to listen to you b#tch about it or refund you for the ammo cause your rifle doesn't like it. Good test, Tools! My experiences are pretty much the same as yours. It is also possible (if you're willing to put in the work!) To turn FMJ into quick and dirty hollow points. Just use a heavy grit sand paper, maybe 60 grit ir so, and all it takes is a few seconds against a belt sander and bingo, hollow point. It doesn't take but 4 or 5 seconds and the bullet doesn't get hot enough to affect anything. If you're feeling fancy they can be touched up with finer grit to smooth off the burrs. It isn't necessary, they will still shoot just fine. Just don't grind them down so far as to effect feeding. Just sand off enough to get into the hollow space under the tip of the bullet and they work exactly like the store bought HP's. I also find Tul ammo to usually be a bit lighter loaded than the Wolf, which is loaded lighter than most other commercial "military" grade ammo. None of it is exactly fast to begin with. If you roll your own and want some screaming velocities, load up some Hornady 110 gr. .308 soft points! 2500 fps is easy to get yet these little Carbine bullets, while not the most accurate, the velocity, if you hit anything, is unreal! Theses bullets tend to stay together, too, with perfect mushrooms at that 2500 fps! Good fun stuff to play with, for sure! Cheers, crkckr

@@ToolsandTargets An interesting one might be PPU 7.62x39 SP versus PPU .223 SP ammo from the most common rifle length of 16". Both ammo types are readily available at the moment as you probably already know. I currently use PPU .223 SP ammo in my AR pistol as defensive ammo. From tests I've seen on other channels, that stuff does spectacular temporary stretch cavities. It would be interesting to see if it out-performs the 7.62x39mm rounds.

Will say from a practical perspective doing skunk removal on a buddies property,that the 7.62x39 hollow points work. Buddy shot the skunk 5 times with a 10/22 using thunderbolt rds with the only result being it changing direction and heading towards a bush. Connected with one russian think was silverbear hp round and it dumped energy and sent it literally front flipping into said bush. Wish still had my old 20" barreled norinco skiss. Ar47 just doesnt have the same charm that old thing had. Was one of the good import ones,cant remember the numbers but had a clean chrome lined bore and shot as straight as you could ask it to. Through a tapco number on it as came with a chote machine and tool stock on it that was too wobbly for my taste. And threw a scout scope on it as well as a couple leather 1" dog collars I sinched as tight as I could and cut down to make sure the gas piston cover that had the picatinny didn't wobble. Kept it fed with 20 rd poly duckbill mags as was less chance of the sharp fmjs in the deep curved mags biting into the poly and hanging up since was almost like they were built for hp or sp rounds not fmjs. Never had a problem with the brand x 30rd steel box it came with and got a 40rd promag to work pretty well after fed it about 36 or 7 rds then presded them back and forth repeatedly ad nauseum to literally saw a groove in the poly for fmjs to run. Actually borrowed a folding grip that came on brothers airsoft gun since had to have it folded to easily clear the hook and press mag insertion method with the 40 rd banana. Much preferred the 20rd and just throwing a meaty rubber rail cover on the under pic rail for grip. The 20 rounders also kept weight down a bit,were more reliable and was already twice the cap on what ended up being a very capable "surprisingly marksman" rifle at least at the 200 yd mark had it sighted for. Never did figure out if the tapco telescoping buttstock on it was a mil or civ spec AR clone as planned to attach a fixed butt stock to it since it had a slight wobble to it I didnt like but wasnt near as sloppy as the chote ir choate,cant remember which and probably coulda fixed kinda easy with a couple O rings or some tape or junk. Miss my skiss Was what one could call a wwsd rifle. What would simonov do

You should show the wound channels from more angles on the outside of the gel, and then cut the gel halfway through each bullet trajectory to really reveal the details of the wound channels I'd use the HP for self-defense, to minimize over-penetration. It also has a wider permanent wound cavity. I'd use the SP for hunting, for deeper penetration of quadripeds. Also, it looks to have a bit of wider permanent wound cavity early on, and definitely carries on more of a permanent wound cavity at the later part of the wound channel. But, most human torsos (standing, facing you) aren't that thick, so I'd rather have the wider wound channel in the middle that the HP has for self-defense. The SP looks like a fair hunting round, although all the little pieces of the bullet would be a major negative for a hunter

Took my first buck in the mid late 90's with the HP x39 out of a Norinco SKS. It may not be pretty. But at 20-25 yards. It sure did the trick. As time and experience came. I found a preference for the 154gr SP in the 7.62x39 works well for deer, others have spoke well of the same load on hogs. But if you get either of those in the lungs and they perform as they did in your test. Freezer is getting filled up 😆

I shot a deer with a similar sp, I never found the jacket, but the lead core was found and it weighed in right about 85 grains, so that gell is a pretty accurate representation, my shot did strike bone, and did penetrate more than 16 inches as well though, it was a frontal shot and the core traveled all the way to behind the ribs. Overall I'd say the 7.62x39 is a great deer cartridge at moderate ranges and the cheap Russian sp or hp will put them down with good shot placement.

A lot of videos in the past using the 7.62x39 the HP didn’t expand and acted like a FMJ. Maybe they are different now? That’s why I always go with SP. they expand reliably.

🇦🇺😎👍Hey brother I love the 7.62x39. We aren’t allowed semi autos just in case nothing happens but we are allowed bolt actions to keep the tyrants safe. The only cheap soft points are PPU $79/100 and they work well…great wound damage from the 7.62r tumbler🏁….🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🤠👊

Great test! One thing I noticed is that the HP round has an open base on the bullet and the SP has a closed base on the bullet. Curious why that is and if it had any impact (pun intended) on your test results. Would be curous also to see how the TulAmmo 154 grain SP would compare.

Frankly, I was impressed with the h.p. mushroom. I've only used them for range fodder. I use both 125gr. and 154gr. s.p.'s. Pigs don't complain. I did buy some fraggies, for two leggeds, but thankfully habe never used the first round. I had read that the 7.62x39 weren't true h.p.'s, that it was only a shallow tap in the end of the projectile. This vid tells me otherwise, h.p.'s would work as well as s.p.'s for hunting. Just goes tah, show...ya nevah can tell!
