I got both, i constantly use beauty dish more than softbox due to better contrast

Most of the differences come down to the size difference, especially when you use that diffuser shower cap. If you bought a softbox of the same size (without honeycomb), it would probably look almost identical.

I like the contrast and flash output on beauty dish especially while shooting HSS

I really like the contrasty, harder light. And it wasn't as hard-looking as I was expecting. The main difference between the beauty dish and the softbox is light to shadow transition. The softbox pretty much shadowless light while the beauty dish gave some lovely sculpting with the more defined, darker shadows.....but they weren't super dark. I rather liked the beauty dish. That looks like a 16". I have one on the way and the white version as well (before I saw this vid) so I'm a little happier now that I bought them). Thanks for this vid.

Nice comparison. Also saw your review comparing the light dome mini ii. I’m surprised you didn’t like the light output of the mini ii but like the beauty dish (42cm) here even though it’s smaller than the mini ii (55cm) Now I wonder if a larger 55cm beauty dish would provide the perfect balance of output and compact size. I also think that the beauty dish here looks good even though it has more contrasty shadow roll off. Maybe a larger beauty dish balances that out.

Nice one, very intersting shadow, seems to provide more detail. I like the look of that one. I was sure it will be very harsh, but it's nice, perfect for your studio. The fact you need a lot less power, opens up some interesting lighting ideas in the studio.

Yeah totally agree! I forgot to mention that I tried one a few days ago and was really shocked at how good it was for video!

Normally you would use the beauty dish without the diffusor, otherwise you just make a small softbox out of it. Also you would bring a dish that small size much closer to you unless you want that harsh light look.

Using diffusion with softbox just beats the purpose of the beauty dish (the distinct look).

The other day I did a photo shoot down by this beautiful Pond and during that time I was there there were 35 mph winds! 😅😅😅 we had a hell of a time.... In the end I took off the 36-in softbox and went with my Beauty Dish

I’m using strobes: I’m thinking about switching to a beauty dish to replace umbrella key with dance portraits, simply because with one of my dance school clients, she has low ceilings and a big umbrella gets restricted from going up high enough for the older, taller students. A big soft fill source I think should take care of the harder shadows created by the smaller key source that’s probably further away from subject due to the more efficient beauty dish.

Very mild difference but it’s better to have a beauty dish, it’s cheaper, less power and lesser space. I’d try a beauty dish as well

Oooh that's interesting.... there's definitely a much more defined shadow on the offside of your face with the beauty dish, but you're right about the spill - it focuses the viewer's attention much more on the subject. It's too close to call for us, but it looks great either way. Did the B Dish come with it's own bulb? If not, what would you recommend?

Yeah it’s much closer than I thought it was going to be but I think I prefer the beauty dish which is odd because no one ever talks about using them. I used the same cob light I’ve been using for years a bowens mount which is the same as the softbox.

Nice video! The beauty dish seems to add nice highlights but at the expense of dimmer shadows and lower overall lighting. Perhaps you can compensate by editing the lighting in the video or by playing with settings but overall I prefer the softbox

Interesting…. I’m very torn but surprised at how much I like the catch light on the beauty dish… not sure I can go back now 🤣
