According to the ring and ball method is the temperature at which a layer of binding agent of dimension acquired a specific tendency to now under the weight of a steel ball of given size and weight. The softening point is the temperature at which a material softens beyond some arbitrary softness. A ring and ball apparatus can also be used for the determination of softening point of bituminous materials / wax / Asphalts etc.
