Demo and review of the SOFTUBE MODEL 84 emulation of the classic ROLAND JUNO 106 anlogue synthesizer from 1984. We'll play some wonderful sounds including bass, pads, keyboards, synth and arps. Using today the ARTURIA KEYSTEP 37 for step sequencer and arpeggiator patterns. As a special treat we'll play the excellent presets created by MATT JOHNSON, the keyboard player from JAMIROQUAI.

Matt Johnson is certainly a great part of the whole KZfaq keyboard world. Not a fan of all these presets, but they're well put together and the ones I do like, well I REALLY like. Nice choice of vid subject, Woody.

thank you, indeed yeah, some exceptional sounds in there, especially once you do some basic tweaks. can recommend the demo version, forgot to mention on the vid, it's like 30 days no limitations.

Great synth and great review. Not the cheapest of producers but the quality of softubes products seem excellent to me. This and their sh101 copy are some of the best emulations out there.

yeah it does, for me personally the 4 (or is it 5) note poly has been a turnoff, there's a reason they called the original the juno-6. :)

@@WoodyPianoShack The four voice cap and the lack of USB class-compliance have shut me off from the earlier Boutiques. The JD08 looks REALLY good, but I still hate the lack of class compliance and the lack of sysex. VSTs are still th' way to go far as I'm concerned.

It is on sale now I think until the end of the day for like 39 bucks if you already have a Softube account, otherwise 43. It never has been that cheap. I finally bought it.

Matt is an absolute legend of a programmer (never mind player), but I was expecting a little more from these sounds! There are some brilliant presets in there though.. But I'm really liking the sound of the Softube plugin, to me it has something to it sonically that the other competitors lack.

interesting comment, thanks xavier, well he made about 100 presets and I only showed 10 and I didn't make effort to choose the best, just the first ones :) and of course, you can only squeeze so much out of a juno ... agreeing with you on the second point! :)

I picked this up a few weeks ago. I'm a fan of the original juno series. The Model 84 is an amazing plugin. It's really warm too and feels full. If you can catch it on sale, it's a must have plugin IMO.

having the TAL, the Roland Cloud and the Arturia I am not really in the market for yet another 106, but I love Matt's channel so I thought I would listen in. I seem to remember my 106 being able to enable both chorus's at the same time. It has been a few years since we have parted ways though, so, memory being what it is.....

I'm thoroughly infatuated with Cherry Labs' DCO-106. It was only 30 clams so the price was VERY right (I'm still gobsmacked at the prices used Junos command nowadays. WhyWhyWHY didn't I buy one in the 1990s when I had the CHANCE?!?!? :(

Technically it really is a single DCO driven by one master clock (8 MHz! Juno 6/60 is only 1 Mhz, which is why only Juno 106 has the RANGE buttons - Juno 6/60 would lose frequency precision if you go any higher - exactly the same problem of the Atari 800 POKEY soundchip). The square and sawtooth are both simply 'waveshapes' of the same core oscillator, and the sub is just a 'divided down' square wave. So they're all locked in phase and frequency, but are summed in the mixer. It's just a clever use of resources.

There’s some nice presets in there. The voice architecture may be documented somewhere regarding that DCO.

Interestingly, if you press both Chorus I and II buttons on the Juno 6 the signal becomes mono!

I used the free TAL one and was very pleased with it. I looked around for a soft-synth version with more options and found a.o. the TAL paid, off course, the Cherry Audio, the Roland and the Softube. Read reviews on forums and watched some videos. Affordability for the occasional hobbyist sadly is not the strongest selling point of all of them. But here's the confusing thing for me. In a DAW-video I saw the Roland had two envelopes. This is a bit weird, for the original hasn't. A preset I liked on the Roland can't be reproduced on the other ones, then, can it? Nor on a vintage physical one. BTW the Softube is on sale now.

you're right, roland cloud chose to "enhance" the juno emulation with an extra envelope and some other features lacking on the original, for me that spoils the design philosophy of the original.

Sir can import a sample on modx plus because I need for 4 reasons First reason one for live orchestral performance program and second reason for studio recording and 3 reason how many own samples and library s can I improt on modx plus and 4 reason it's fast loading keyboard because I saw korg Kronos it has 9 engine and loading was too slow can't use on live orchestral program can modx plus beat this korg Kronos and natulis

The GUI is easy on the eyes which is important in my opinion considering your gonna spend a lot of time at the screen certainly the best interface compared to the other emulations ,this plugin has a much improved Unison ,unlike.the hardware.... i had an original Juno 6 and 106 they were so simple to program, and im getting the same vibe with this Version....only downside is the Installation and licensing protocol really fiddley and compersome. But still worth the price tag ,especially since its on sale "Black.Friday"

I had 2 106 in the past an i can confirm that in both of them you could activate botth chorus I & II at the same time.

interesting, rather weird that softube would miss that and claim it's not possible on the hardware, maybe i misunderstood or something lost in translation.

Only the Juno 6 and 60 can have both choruses activated at the same time. It creates a vibrato effect. The Juno 106 cannot have both active at the same time

I have serviced quite a few 106s and none of them have been able to use chorus I and II at the same time, this is a known bug that was fixed from the Juno-6/60.

Matt is a wonderful musician and a nice guy. I am not a fan of Juno simulations. I prefer to have fun with a Jupiter one... More oscillators, more fun.
