Gatekeepers were found shaking once again. 😂 I noticed someone claiming that a cloud engineer should have a BSc degree in computer science. 😂😂🤦🏾 Different paths for different people. A degree is important, especially if you lack both experience AND industry certs. However, it's NOT compulsory. Thanks Boni, I've been asking for cloud engineer payslips. 😅

In all industries you are likely to find people without a degree but yes , most job requirement (90%) will need a BSc as a primary requirement for shortlisting. The person is right , he is not gatekeeping anything. You must not take outliers as if they are regulars.

@@mpholoso3261 Its not about college but more of having a good portfolio. study from anywhere including online youtube materials. After that get yourself a great portfolio, you will get a gig. certificates in some industries dont matter that much. Just choose what you want and do it well

Certification is one of many ways to get a junior dev role. Other ways include enrolling in a software dev internship and working your way into a junior dev role, or have an impressive portfolio of projects you’ve built.

Don’t quit. Finish Comp Sci, I did Comp Sci, these other streams are much easier to get into once you have that degree considering you already started. You can do these other courses as short courses but your degree will hold water. Comp Science isn’t easy but worth it. Just pray and have faith you will find employment afterwards, then the rest is history. Hardest part is your initial employment. I managed to get a low level job at SANRAL during e-tolls implementations and I was still a student doing the same course you doing. That helped. Try find some employment once you hit 3rd year, it will be hard to balance but you might get a gig early. Goodluck.

Quiting will not be in your interest. Getting certificates is easy, you could literally do it as you study. When a BSc Computer Science graduate applies for any post and is put up against a person with matric and certificates the company will most likely choose you. It's only people without a degree that will tell you otherwise

@@nkosingiphilembatha7940 im doing azure cloud engineering certs so its on Microsoft learning platform. Just search on Google for the name of the certification you want to do. I prefer first doing your research on them to find out what they are and what they are for before choosing a certification. Microsoft also provides learning content right under the name of the certification so you can start learning ASAP, the same applies for other vendors like cisco, aws and comptia

Do your research before choosing a certification because theres many and they're all different, and you'll find the course content right under the name of the certification so you can start learning asap.

You should be getting paid much more then. Find another job that pays higher, your employer will counter offer you. You are likely underpaid. If you want more money, you need to job hop. Don’t buy the idea that job hopping is bad. In the IT space that’s exactly what we do. There’s no collecting “service years”. I’ve hopped couple of times even returning to one of the companies I’ve worked at before then still left the again. Unfortunately negotiating salary increase don’t solve the issue when you under paid , you need salary adjustment for real change.

A cloud engineer should have at least a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, engineering or other related field that provides similar skills. Unfortunately people with degrees are pushed out of tech jobs because employers cannot meet the salary demands.

@@liferesetwithboni It is a multi-disciplinary role as it needs someone with combination of IT skills from programming, networking, cyber-security, database administration/management, application integration, and many more. In most cases a degree would cover all these in a curriculum, and to specialise in cloud engineering you need to get certifications in the cloud services offered by AWS/Azure/GCP. The reason I say a degree is required is that it offers the foundation like in any specialised profession.

Should have? I don't think so. Cloud engineer jobs aren't exactly entry-level roles- a graduate with zero experience will not qualify for such jobs. However, if that graduate has a couple of cloud certs and comptia ones, then they'll have some advantage in landing an internship. Also, software devs with one or two cloud certs can easily transition to cloud, from what I have observed. Knowledge of networking, database, cybersecurity and etc. can be supplemented by getting specific certs such comptia network+, security+, sql courses via Udemy and etc. One can attain all of that without a degree.
