Machete are meant for small trees and brush. If ur processing large pieces of wood get a ax
@mwhich5010 жыл бұрын
If I was going to use a machete like a hatchet, I wouldn't use a light machete. The $50-$60 Condors are the right choice for this type of abuse. Every time I watch a light machete review, it is being used to assault tree trunks or thick limbs? I just want to see it being used on brushy material, lol.

I appreciate the post, but here's what I can't understand: Why do all these folks do machete reviews that consist of chopping relatively large logs or trees? By definition (quite literally from Merriam-Webster), a machete is intended to be used for "for cutting sugarcane and underbrush". The original machetes were constructed to cut jungle vegetation, not wood or logs. That is why they are so thin, as compared to an axe, which is obviously thick.

Got one from Wally World a few years ago. Used it once on a couple of finger sized vines. Blade folded over in several places. Right on the edge. It's like the blade was just mild steel. Their heat treating must be all over the place or just non existent.

Usually the price is indicative of the quality ( a high percentage of truth ), but atleast you tested it out before trusting your life on it in a wilderness survival. My 13" chopper is a H.I. M43 Khukuri, very heavy, but I would trust my life on it, Thanx for a great reminder, Bro.

You are correct in your definition. BUT, SOG also advertises on their website that it chops wood. I think most people who spent time outdoors and are into knives(and machetes), would expect a Machete from a name brand manufacturer to do a little more than cut small brush. Having said that, the initial damage (bent blade) occurred when cutting brush in the back yard and with the exception of the couple logs I cut, it was used mainly on wood a couple inches thick or thinner, like when it failed.
@christianandrew391910 жыл бұрын
Maybe the machete doesn't suck and you broke it trying to cut a six inch hardwood log with it instead of using the proper tool for logs: an axe.

I also picked up an Ontario after this but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Had a fantastic summer with the kids then came down with a severe case of Bells Palsy a few weeks ago. I'm hoping a few more weeks and I'll be able to get back into the woods. Thanks for watching.

Just so everyone's on the same page, this is called a Machete, but anyone who's familiar with clearing Brush with actual Machetes knows the SOGfari is WAY TOO LIGHT & short to clear even light Brush (you'd have to swing a LOT more & harder) This is really a Combat Blade being MARKETED as a Machete

Have mine 13'' for over a year. I've been used and abused. Choped branches of soft both hard wood. Even chopped realy hard wood bushes. And theres just tiny barely noticeble chipping on the end of the blade, cause I hit the ground for couple times. No big problems realy so far.

I have 2 SOG knives which I love but every blade is an individual design. 8CR13 is pretty low budget steel though, seems inadequate for a blade of that size?
@WildGearAdventures11 жыл бұрын
I was a little dissapointed but not surprised, it was a SOG. I'll be heading out soon with an Ontario CT1 12" Traditional Cutlass Machete . I think I'll have better luck with it than the SOGfari. Thanks for watching and commenting.

do you realize machetes are for brush clearing? i know guys that have had $5 machetes last 15-20 years, it's all about using the proper tool for the job
@Imakebootysclap9 жыл бұрын
I can see why it failed you.. you need 3/16 thick blade for that kinda chopping.. a thin lil machete is for light twigs weeds small vines.. get a condor Kershaw camp or something like that if you want a machete that's more like an axe
@Knivesandguns10110 жыл бұрын
Get the tanto machete 10 inch way better than that I don't chop nothing bigger than 1 inch wood and branches with mine but it is great for brush
@timgodwin4779 жыл бұрын
Use an ax. Machetes are ment for long brush an vines not chopping wood or wood processing. A hatcet worked best for that.

You can easly break a $100+ machete the same way with hard use cutting trees and thick logs, tree that's what axes are for not machetes. I can understand if you're torture testing it but that's not practical use.
@tekrit324910 жыл бұрын
Btw it's not a saw blade, you use that side to grip onto loose branches and yank them down
IMHO: In malaysia our parang AKA Machete , has to handle everything we throw at it. we use it for everything , even digging... and it only cost about USD$10
@MentalD-Fox10 жыл бұрын
I would come to this conclusion, yes a machete can be use to cut wood but not this 1, something probably sturdier.

Very negligent use of a machete...its a fabulous tool for its intended use (BRUSHCLEARING) Theres a proper tool for every job as we all are aware.SOG makes novelty knives in my opinion but you get what you pay for.If you only paid around ten dollars and are getting that kind of action out of that blade then in my opinion you got more than you paid for considering that chopping down stumps and trees were never intended for the SOGFARI..Use a COLDSTTEL if you want maximum use that can take the abuse and still be usable.
@mephysto699 жыл бұрын
I agree with you fully. I see so many people that buy Machete's and try to use them as an axe or hatchet if you want to clear lumber such as in this video buy an axe or hatchet. If any are having a hard time grasping this concept ask yourself. Would you go on a logging road or into a mudding track designed for 4x4 trucks with porsche ? the right tool for the right job, and if your not using the right tool for the job maybe your missing two tools instead of one. The other being the one between yoru shoulders.
@stephenbeard98829 жыл бұрын
A decent machete won't have any problems cutting down a tree. It might be more work than an axe, but it will do the job. I used an $8 Imacasa as a kid for years with no failures.

i have the 18" version and it seems to do the job fine i would trust it. i have used and abused it and it hasn't given up yet. also every other review i have looked at has said the same thing that it works great and is a really good buy for only being $20. I think you just got bad one.
@TheSKS762399 жыл бұрын
I absolutely hate sog knives. Last year, I broke one of their seal pups doing some minor wood processing, and they said "That's not covered in the LIFETIME WARRANTY." Then I got the seal pup elite, and it came with the blade duller than a butter knife (not exaggerating) and multiple chips on the edge. And it's impossible to sharpen. Don't buy sog.
@cbr600rrturbo10 жыл бұрын
mine waved in 2 spots so u know its gonna chip & break its only a matter of time,for me every brand ive tried beats this out except the gerber, go with Ontario,coldsteel,condor or kershaw

Stick with cold steel their good and even the tramontina is good. I've also use the 14 inch old hickory butcher knife with 1095 steel as machete. I had the sOG fixation Bowie break the very first time I used and batoned once and the sOG field pup the blade snapped. I just sold my sOG flash 2 (good knife) and only have the sOG magnadot left in inventory. Goal is to have no sOG .
