You both noticed and commented that her light mix is truly emotive and conveys the emotional context. It's always interesting to me when folks feel Sohyang's belting as screaming. Vocally, there is a clear difference between screaming and belting. There is plenty of discussion on this on the web among those smart folks who can talk vocal pedagogy. Some felt her dramatic facial expression indicates strains or difficulty. That is certainly not the case since Sohyang's range far exceeds what's shown here. There are also those who simply don't like high belts, believing that they are signs of excessive showmanship and instinctively provokes a negative reaction. Not sure which camp you belong but that is not the case for me. The emotional impact of Sohyang Bridge Over Troubled Water is tremendously powerful for me. I was grateful to have learned about her and have been a fan for over three years. Sohyang is a devout Christian with her roots in gospel music. You can probably tell the influence int this performance.

It is strange, but it is usually the Filipinos that say that Sohyang is screaming. Most of the rest of the world worship her belting. I have watched many reactors to this particular song, and 95% love the interpretation of this song and quite a few teared (even some vocal coaches). To me, overdoing a song is like Katrina doing Somewhere Over the Rainbow - way too many riffs and runs, and changes of tune. You should do a little googling into Sohyang background. She is such an incredible person. More of an angel from God than human being and also multi talented. Anyway, to each his own opinion. I have read from a few diehard fans of Sohyang that they also wasn't able to connect with her the first time. The more they listen, the bigger a fan they became. For me, my first listen is Arirang Alone and I fell in love with her.

All I have to say is Sohyang is technically perfect. She doesn't scream in her belts, because they're all fully supported.

You can tell the guy on the left is trying not to piss off his Filipino subscribers or he does not know what a beautiful supported and resonant belting actually sounds like. Their channel so far only have Filipino singers. Coincidence? I think So Hyang is amazing as well as the Filipino singers also.

As much as I respect the talent of the great famous divas of our time - the Whitneys and Celines and Mariahs and other legendary singers of that caliber - I sometimes cringe at their tendency on occasion to overdo it with all the unnecessary runs and what sounds like showing off, which can ruin an otherwise great song, TO ME. One of the things I love about Sohyang is how much she DOESN'T do that, so it's weird to hear the one guy say she was overdoing it in this performance, because I didn't think she was at all, although I'm not a big fan of one of her other popular performances (Lean On Me) for exactly that reason, but it's a one-off. Most of her performances, including this one and also Arirang Alone, Hug Me, Breathe, Fate, and many more just blow me away. And she's astute enough to know when she can take a legend's song and run with it making it her own and arguably improving on the original (eg I Have Nothing by Whitney), and also to know when not to do that and just sing it straight because to do more would be excessive (ie The Power Of Love by Celine). I think she's the best singer in the world at the moment, and I know that's all subjective, but the reason is because of not just her talent, which is immense, but at her ability to connect on an emotional level. I'm not Christian or religious at all, but Sohyang speaks about singing for God, about comforting people, spiritual stuff, and to borrow a Christian expression, she touches my soul. It's a cathartic experience I've never felt from another singer. Also, this was a gospel arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Stylistically, this is how you do it. There was no screaming. Still enjoyed the reaction though.

That´s so not screaming! At all!! If it was she could not sing all the song like she does! She is fully supported and the proof in her vocal cords, just look at her neck, her throat, there´s absolutely no tension!! You have to learn to identify when is your personal taste and when is a technical aspect, other wise don´t say you are a singer in your videos/channel or whatever.

I respect your opinion, Amigo... My wife can't stand her 'screaming', but for me, I thought it was done just right. I do have some problem with her other songs where she does seem to overdo the high notes. However, for this song, If she just sang a higher note version of Simon and Garfunkel, it would have been a bit boring... I really am curious what Simon thinks about this Cover; I am thinking he might prefer this over the Garfunkel version. I read Simon told Garfunkel to sing like a Choir boy for this.

If it sounded like she was screaming, perhaps your stereo is just not up to the task of reproducing her vocals accurately. It was not a scream but a perfectly pitched vocal. If you were listening to it on a laptop computer, well, you get what you pay for. Try listening to it on a GOOD stereo with a big screen HDTV. I think it will suddenly lock into place for you. I think I know what you may be reacting to. Perhaps the style of singing is not to your taste. That is fine. We all have different tastes. When I listen to Mariah Carey, for instance, it so often seems to me that she is just displaying vocal gymnastics because she can, and they are not at all in keeping with the spirit of the song. Some people like it but I find it tiresome and have to change the channel.
