Great stuff. Your note on coir not having nutrients probably saved most of my plants. Thank you!

I can see that combed coir on Luna and now can't get it out of my head. Reasonable James has really upped the production quality of his vids. The audio is so clear and well paced. That was an incredible difference between the two rudbeckias. As always, thanks for sharing your experience and expertise.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to make and post this video. I bought some Jiffy Seedling Starter Mix which looked a lot like coconut coir was a main ingredient. That stuff didn't soak/accept water for beans. I came looking for info on coconut coir and your video was very helpful. This has helped me understand CC better. The bit about applying nutrients from the get-go with CC is very helpful. Thanks again.

the most beautiful blue flower in my mind is the wild chicory. they are all over Tuscany and California,my two homes and theres no greater joy than waking up to fields of periwinkle blue. they close during the heat of midday. they are perennial, self seed and,if you like the bitter chicories, are a great addition to salads and stir fried greens.

The problem is Coco coir doesn’t just use water to rinse off the salt, it uses harmful chemicals. Then they have to use massive amounts of water to rinse off those chemicals. Those chemicals are than rinsed back into the waters of the poor and already polluted countries we are importing the coco coir from

Personally, I think video length was perfect and thank you for sharing the process as well as the amazing comparison (17 wks vs. 6 wks) - I'm convinced to try coco coir with more vigor!

Thanks for sharing! I started seeds outdoors in my greenhouse without any supplemental lighting and I have mixed results. I just setup lights in my garage and I'm going to test the difference to see if there is any.

I'm glad you said that about the fan. My delphiniums suck. I'm going to point a fan at them, or the one plans which hasn't perished and see if that helps with that dastardly mold. Luckily I have a fresh batch which just germinated with some dianthus. I hope they're all fancy! Now I'm going to look for coco coir too.

This was so well done! Thank you for sharing this journey with us. I'm going to start growing a lot of seeds this year using coconut coir as well, but I'll mix mine with some perlite since we have high humidity in the PNW.

a very informative and must say relaxing video. Enjoyed seeing that coir work well with some seedling and not with others. Question, when you finally plant the seedling into your garden does the coco coir break down and become part of the soil?

Seedlings don't need fertilizer for the first week or two. Mother Nature blessed them with everything they need right inside the seed itself. The cotyledon leaves (seed leaves) are a perfect example. Once the first set of true leaves (normal looking leaves) comes in then fertilizer can be applied.

Seedlings do need fertilizer in the first week or two. I'm doing an experiment and could already tell a difference in the first week or two between potting soil and soilless with no added fertilizer

Peat also has a natural ph of around 4-4.5, if I'm not mistaken. That could be one issue for germination without additional treatment.

This is awesome but I couldn’t afford that light setup 😢 Can you just plant the seed in the bigger pot avoiding transplant? Or is that not ok?

Remember to rinse your (tropical) Coco several times to flush out the salt and fine sand. This also washes free all the tiny particles which together can act like a clay.

Do you have any problems with fungus gnats using coir? I always get so many with bagged potting soil. Coir may be a solution if it does not produce fungus gnats.

I definitely noticed a few fungus gnats here and there before I realized my fan wasn’t working. I eventually got the moisture situation under control and I haven’t seen them since.

I was thinking that too, but then read fungus gnats actually like coir. I don't understand why consider coir is hard to break down, that's what I heard... I'm having a battle with fungus gnats
