Aside the fantastic performance, Sokolov knows the secret of true drama inside the notes.

Oh, that wonderful fugue with the repeated semiquavers ... Absolutely no surprise why Bach was moved to transcribe this. A masterpiece.

Do I hear birds chirping in the background of the recording, or am I imagining things? Birdsong is probably the only extraneous noise I'd excuse on a recording of such an exquisitely crafted composition. Thank you, THANK YOU, Herr Bach. (And birds!)

I have never found anything in Bach's original works but black marks on buff or tan paper.
