Will an education in solar engineering prove to be a route out of poverty for women in Jordan?
Rafea is the second wife of a Bedouin husband. She is selected to attend the Barefoot College in India that takes uneducated middle-aged women from poor communities and trains them to become solar engineers. The college's 6-month programme brings together women from all over the world. Learning about electrical components and soldering without being able to read, write or understand English is the easy part. Witness Rafea's heroic efforts to pull herself and her family out of poverty.

Many people don't understand that knowledge and skill in itself gives confidence - whether she can use it or not - what matter is that courage she realized she had and the knowledge that she can make a difference and what it will bring to her and her communities lifestyle. It takes more balls than most people have put together - this woman has not even travelled to a big city alone - here she is traveling to a country she has not heard or knows much about it - to a place with a language and culture which is totally alien - with no preparation whatsoever and learning to live by herself and to provide for her family. So yes, the journey itself will produce great change and solar power will produce add to that. It's the next step in supplying humanity with electricity and many arid countries - where people couldn't do anything with the land - can do something with it that will help improve their livelihoods. Kudos to this lady and her courage! Kudos to this empowering initiative and all those who work for these noble goals! May the World prosper!!! :)

@Mirrorwarrior it's hard for a community whose ruled by men for women to flourish and be heard on their rights specially for an Islamic Nation that has its vast and stiff rules deeply rooted in its culture that prohibit women to thrive over men. Luckily, women in Jordan has its Gov't backing that seems to embrace a new world, the new era of women empowerment. Kudos to the Indian Barefoot College where they prove that indeed, knowledge has no boundary across diverse Culture, Language and Nationality.

I met Rafea and Mona the documentary producer in the airport in Abu Dhabi. She told me her story and I was amazed . This video randomly popped up while browsing, I never thought I'd see this.

Absolutely wonderful to see how an uneducated middle-aged woman from a poor community can become an agent of change in her community by desiring to attend a 6 month course in solar engineering at the Barefoot College in Tiloni in India and subsequently bringing back that knowledge to her community, be it in Jordan or Burkina Faso or Columbia or Fiji or wherever there has been no light previously. Bravo, Rafea, and all the other women who decided to be the agent of change for their own poor communities!:)

Rafea is amazing, a voice for her village. This was especially interesting to watch since her and I are the same age. Then I realized she grew up in the desert and had 9 more kids then I did. Watching them interact at school makes you realize that people are people and women are women no matter where in the world you are.

I love it when I saw how joyous the women were when they first gathered around at Barefoot College. It was the excitement to live independently and a freedom to follow their own pursuit, outside of their family duty. It was amazing for me to see such happiness.

This was such a heart touching and inspiring documentary. It really opened my heart to the pain and suffering of poverty, lack of education and no opportunity to grow. Rafea's courage is inspiring to go after what we would love for our life. It also clearly shows how some men just destroy the spirit and potential of women to keep women small and under their control. So great to read of Rafea's accomplishments!

The next time I see some tumblr feminist complaining that some teenager called her a naughty name on the internet, and how oppressed women in the US are, and they're such victims, I'm sending them this video. These are women who are ACTUALLY oppressed, and THEY went out despite the heart wrenching separation from their children, despite the mentality of their county, despite the difficulty, to go get an education. :\

This is proof that one person can actually turn the society around. Not being feminist here but like what they say, teach a woman, you will educate the whole village. and cheers to the Minister of Environment to realise how important this can be (if he decided this on his own) to both her, her family and the country.

Really Awesome India Grows and Teaches World Indians are real Engineers , Inspired by changing the world Damm unemployed in US, even Developed nations on war, But India is Challenging only training program in the whole world where an illiterate woman can become a solar engineer in 6 months I never expected so exciting ever

Jordan, my country, the land of poverty and hunger. Jordanians are really very clever, but there are no opportunities. Opportunities just go for those who have relatives working in the corrupted government. They can take scholarships even though they do not deserve them, but what poor people like me can do. I have graduated with a high percentage from the university. I have studied electrical engineering, but I could not find a job in Jordan. Young people like me have just one dream. We dream of leaving our country and go to USA or Canada. There we would be treated like humans, not animals. I wish one day I will leave Jordan and I promise I will never get back. This country will never ever change. Jordanians have to suffer forever. Can you imagine, I am an engineer and I am nearly homeless, what a bad country.

Seems like the husband is uneducated and ignorant while the wife was only uneducated. The idea that she would gain knowledge that was important for the community must have terrified him.

I really hope those women make it and can help their entire communities. It was also nice to see so many woman from so many nations come together peacefully and work together. I do not know if we guys could ever do that.

fantastic... this video inspires hopefully more funding for women in disadvantaged areas as it gives a strong example of the achievement and hopefully escalating achievement of both an empowering and environmentally friendly project. It also shows that everybody, women and men, all over the world, we have the capability to achieve something awesome if given the chance. More chances like this should exist

Incredible. After merely 5 yrs primary education, these woman can build biasing circuits for fully-regulated LEDs, a feat many of us 3rd-year EE's struggle with despite a fully-privileged upbringing and physics background. There truly is hope in the world! :)

I would congratulate the Bare Foot organization for organizing such a wonderful program to alleviate the hardships of the under privileged section of the society. Empowering women in rural areas is a big stride towards development. I wish in Kashmir too such programs to be launched. ❤️

I wish I could learn this too. I live in rural America does that count? These women are so smart and beautiful. I was so proud of the lady who went back to Jordan and stuck up for herself and accomplished her goals. Just because you’re not educated in a school does not mean you are dumb. You can be ignorant to things you’ve next experienced but ignorant does not mean dumb. She knows how to survive in the desert where a lot of other people may not. She’s just educated in a different way. Just like I know how to hunt and skin a deer and how to fish. How many educated people in the city would know how to do that? I really love to learn though and reading is my passion. I just wish I had the money and opportunity. Btw, poor doesn’t mean dumb either. So proud of these women 👏 👏 👏

Je vous remercie pour partager cet film inspirant. C'est une histoire aussi incroyable, tellement surprenant. Au début du film en tant que les femmes dansent ensemble, elles me donnent un grand sourire. Je les trouve magnifiques, les tous. Wow.
