This is another EasyPeasy project that doesn't take long. It won't break the bank or your back. A really fun DIY project. Allows you to leave your plants unattended for days. You can place your plants where electricity is not available. This planter design reuses water and fertilizers. Uses inexpensive Dollar Tree $1.25 stackable planter trays and a repurposed solar-powered drip irrigation system.

UPDATE: I've adjusted my water flow from 2 times a day for 20 minutes to 2 times a day for 5 minutes.

I have a similar set up using 5 gallon buckets from the big box DIY stores as my reservoir. I don’t have a yard and have several different indoor hydroponic systems. Instead of a solar pump I use a small fountain pump. I have a central pvc pipe that connects to the pump and the top stackable. The water/nutrient solution drains from the top unit down through the bottom tiers and back into the reservoir. The pump is on a timer. I use soil less media, coco coir/perlite, in my stackable system. I use coco coir because it holds on to the nutrients more efficiently than other soil less media. I use the stackable system for strawberries and some herbs. I grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, greens and herbs in my other hydroponic systems.

If you Stack. them inside each other first and then Drill through about five of them at a time then you won't have to worry about the thin plastic cracking because adding More of them Keeps them Sturdy and not cracking While drilling. Worked for me 😊

Only thing I would change is offsetting the drain holes so it’s not watering the plant itself but the soil. Some plants don’t do well with constant dampness on the leaves if you plan on veggies.

Good idea. I mostly used mine to root cuttings and they were placed around the outside of the cups.

Have a go with using a solder iron to poke the holes...they have cordless ones now. No cracking of the flimsy plastic! I used one to poke holes in water bottles for self wicking planters

Thanks for sharing this project. Its got me thinking how I might be able to do this with my outdoor potted plants especially when my husband and I want to go camping this summer. Not always easy to get someone to come by to water plants.

This is great. I had wanted to try the Dollar Tree stack but was not sure how to set up a watering system. i will definitely give this a try. I appreciate the detail to not put holes in the depressions on the bottom of the pots to insure the wicking process. Thank you!

First time using the DT stackables this year. I had good success with plants but watering was thee worst. I used 10’ electrical conduit to stabilize the planters. I also used the smaller DT stackable planters as spacers between the larger ones. This enabled better air flow and rotation to get even sun exposure. Your video has given me a good plan for next year. Thank you.

This is the best approach to Dollar Tree stackables that I have ever seen. Genius!!! 😄👍 Guess I'll be going to the Dollar Tree tomorrow so I can give this a try. Yes, this is an inexpensive way to have a low upkeep plant container. With this big tub I'm using for a reservoir I think I can go for a month or more without watering. Thanks again for watching my videos.

Hi - not clear exactly where the T connector comes in. Can you give a little more detail on how that works?

Let me see if I can help. You can see the water that flows into tier 5. Tier 5 drains into tier 3 that drains into tier 1 and back into the reservoir. What you can't see is water also flows into tier 4 via the "T" which is placed in the water line just above the potting soil. Then tier 4 drains into tier 2 which drains into the reservoir.

Hi, great video. I have question I like you live in a hot area, Central Florida, so was wondering if you have a problem with the water in the reservoir getting too hot? I was/am going to experiment with reflectix. Any thoughts on this?

I have had no problems with the water overheating. There is a large evaporating area in the trays that would have a cooling effect. It worked really well for rooting cuttings. Thanks for watching.

Great video. Is it possible to use the same pump for two stackable sets of 6 that sit next to each other?

I don't think it will pump enough volume at that height. In the first part of the video I stated that I only made this one 5 high because there was not enough volume if I went higher. Well yes, there is a way but it complicates things a bit. It all has something to do with head pressure. You could mount the pump and reservoir as high as the highest tier. But then you would need to have a catch pan under the tiers and catch the water. Then pour the water back in the upper reservoir. Good luck if you try it. Thanks for watching.

@@GardenSpaces thank you. What I was thinking was to have two different sets at 5 high and split the water hose between the two. I suppose that would also be an issue with volume going to two different hoses. This really is a great idea. I was just trying to save having to buy two pumps. I am thinking of using a 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it as the reservoir.

Can you tell us where you placed the anti-siphon device? Is it nearer the water source or the solar unit?

My kit did not come with an anti-siphon device although the instruction manual shows one. It does not show where to place it that I can see. If I had one I would place it close to the output of the pump. This is such a short run of tubing I did not have any problem with the pump priming itself. Wish I could be of more help.

The water from the bottom tray will drip into the holes you cut in the top of the bin, but what about the water drip from the second tray? Seems to me it would just drip on the lid and collect there. How did you solve this?

Level 1 and level 2 both drain on the the reservoir lid which drains into the reservoir. Level 5 drains into level 3 which drains into level 1 which drains into the reservoir. Level 4 drains into level 2 which drains into the reservoir. I hope this helps if I understand your question. Thanks so much for watching my video.

@@GardenSpaces It seems, from the video that you drilled holes, in the lid, where the hole for level one (bottom) would be, but did you also drill holes for the second level (one above the bottom)? It would seem to me that it being well above the lid that the holes would have to be quite a bit larger to stop the water from pooling, as it would just flow out rather than the first which would flow directly in. Is it conceivable to add a small length of tubing, at each "wing" to the holes in the second level that would go down through a hole in the lid, for draining?

Not really. The timing of the pump is important to allow the proper drainage. Additionally, the composition of the growing media is important as well. Using a growing media that provides air pockets is recommended. The addition of perlite will increase air pockets. Many soil less growing media, such as coco coir or LECA, are more effective at providing air pockets.
