Just put the terminal in your vice, heat it up and fill it half full with solder and slide the wire in.

That’s called cold soldering and it will work but not for long

Nice tip. You might consider a grommet in the frame hole before the metal rubs through your nice new cable.

Nice job. Everything is clean and neat: from the routing of the battery cables, to the ground terminal “lug” you made, to soldering the positive battery cable terminal. Nice job and attention to detail ! The ground lug is my favorite.

Back at the old battery cable plant at Packard Electric, they used to have solder pots. Thwy just dip the entire connector/cable assembly in the pot. Maybe a dozen or two at a time. Solder didnt stick to insulation. I dont recall seeing adverse effects. I was only passing through, wish i paid closer attention to fluxing/crimping...

No need to drill a hole. Just put the connector in a vice and prefill it with solder.

I started out soldering my terminals but the price of solder has gone way up. Bought a $10 hammer crimping tool. Works great and from what I’ve read is better than using solder

Constant flame/heat required. Not this wiggling. Other than that it's fine. However inside the lug I suspect the flux hasn't travelled that well because of irregular heat corculation inside. Therefore the bonding of flux and solder will be imperfect.

I've done a few of these and struggled with getting the solder into the fitting and not burning up the insulation. I'll have to try both of these things next time.

Thanks for sharing the video - how do you know when the terminal is full of solder? Are you looking for it starting to wick to the other side?

You're welcome. I wait till it drips out and soaks in the insulation end.

@@MattsShop Never say never 1. That shoe is smooth inside. An idiot may come by and pull on it to drag the battery over the floor. The crimp creates a connection that can take a significant pull. 2. Solder has a different expansion rate from copper.. so due to heat differences the solder may release from copper in time. This really does happen. 3. It not industry standard so a pro will never do it like shown in this video. Filling the shoe with solder does increase the connected surfaces and makes your connection electrically better. However you can not look inside the shoe so you won't know if the connection is still good in time if you don't crimp it. I like the little hole for filling it up, and the wet cloth as a heat sink, great ideas!

Shit should be crimped. If you don’t want to invest in a crimper, find a diesel shop. They will have one.
