Thanks again for such an informative video! regardless of what Brian Weissman says ... most of us crafters are creating EVERYWHERE -- in the kitchen, in the side room while watching TV -- even though extreme safety is an issue - your videos are realistic :) thank you -- there is common sense involved and if you don't know when to use a torch with FLAMES then you really don't need to be using a torch.

Hi WOHW. We haven't made that one yet, but it's in the works. We'll be sending out an email or other notification when it's ready to go out. Great idea though on linking all the You Tube videos together, we'll see what we can do. Thanks Mark N Tech

What about the torch? Is there another video that discusses what kind of torch to start out with? Thank you for making this video, it was so thorough and helpful. I’ve watched a few videos about basic tools/equipment for soldering but yours was the most helpful.

There is a fire proof drop cloth you can use for the floor. Can get aprons that are fire proof too. These you can get at a welling shop or I am sure online. Thanks for the video. Keep safe

Hi Stormy, what a great question. I think it’s because I have a beard and masks don’t work very well for me, that, and the fact that I don’t know many people that wear masks during soldering. But wearing a mask rated for fumes is a great idea especially if ventilation isn’t an option……and you don’t have a beard. Thanks for mentioning it. Mark N Tech

Mark can you please do videos on the copper wire solder you guys carry???
@RioTechs
@RioTechs 8 жыл бұрын
+Christy Mccullough Thanks for watching Christy, i"ll put that on our list of things to get done. Until then, if you have been silver soldering already, it's not much different. The only differences i have noticed are. A. it has a higher melting temp than silver solder so you'll need more heat. B. it doesn't flow as nice as silver solder so it's a little harder to run a long seam. I find i add more smaller snippets of copper solder along the seam than i would with silver solder to compensate for that. C. use a paste flux like HandyFlux, the past solders can handle the higher heat better than the liquid fluxes. I hope this helps. if you have more questions please feel free to contact our Tech Support team. 1-800-545-6566 or at Technical@riogrande.com

Hi Mark - Do you have any good video / book recommendations on mixed metals, e.g. soldering copper, brass, silver together in various combinations...?
@RioTechs
@RioTechs 8 жыл бұрын
+Zippy DoDah Hi Zippy. i haven't seen a book or video that deals specifically with this. Really it's not much different than soldering silver to silver or gold to silver. It's the same techniques. The only caveat that i can think of ( the only thing that's a major factor) is use brass. If you solder brass and sterling together with silver hard solder, you can watch the brass sink into the silver. And then there's the type of brass you use, yellow v.s red. Each of the different brass alloys can can present different difficulties. If you have more questions feel free to contact our Tech team. They can be contacted via email at Technical@riogrande.com. I hope this helps. Mark N Tech

What's the best solder for soldering. Having a had time picking one.
@RioGrande1944
@RioGrande1944 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It depends on the metal that you are working with. For soldering silver, copper and brass, we recommend silver solder. These come in different melting temperatures (densities); when working with these metals you will need to have at least a hard medium and easy on-hand. If you have multiple solder joints on a piece that you plan to solder at different times, then you will want to do step soldering. For example: if you are making a pendant with a bezel for a stone, you will want to solder the bezel together with hard solder, solder the bezel to a back plater with medium solder, and solder the bail to the pendant with an easy solder. This will help to prevent melting previous solder joints, which could cause them to fail. As far as decoding between wire and sheet - that is a personal preference! One of our Jewelry Tech Members let us know that he prefers wire, because he can snip off pieces for delicate jobs and can wire feed for larger jobs. Lastly, for gold - you will always want to use gold solder.

I wouldn't want to work on a straight table. Where would all the precious metal scrap end up ? on the floor I guess..so better to get an old table and where you will sit, make a half round cut in the wood and hang a piece of leather underneath so your precious scrap won't end up in the vacuum cleaner ;-)

Hi debinha209, what a great idea. a pizza stone is made to absorb heat. You might consider going to the hardwarestore and getting some of those little rubber feet to put under it to to keep it off the surface of the table. After a long day of soldering i had my pad heat up and burn my bench top. After adding the feet that has yet to happen again. Thanks for sharing your cool tip. Mark N Tech

This is a horrible video - the safety advice you give will most likely get you sued. The fact that you mention soldering in your kitchen is horrifying. You mentioned putting plastic down to cover the floor in case something hot falls off your bench, really? Plastic is flammable! The fluxes your are using have fluorides and whenever you use oxygen with a fuel gas you should definitely wear shaded glasses a #2 or #3. There are several other safety issues with this video but I've run out of space.
