Also, when done soldering, clean the tip with brass wool as shown. Then clean the tip with tip tinner to remove any impurities followed by brass wool again. Lastly, apply a liberal amount of fresh solder to the tip until it's about to drip, then turn off the iron. Coating the tip with solder will keep it from oxidizing and pitting. I've been doing this for 10+ years and I'm still using my original tips.

I like the video, but, at the end, when the hand's supposed to be turning the iron off, is it actually being turned on? It could be me.. .🙄

@@giraffesushi8112 Interesting.... is this also an exercise in subtle humor? 😉 Oh no! My life has been a lie for the last 2 years. I need time to think about how it all went wrong. 😔

I don't know if it's just me but i find Collin's voice almost hypnotic, his knowledge and the way he presents shows just keeps me hooked.

I love my hoof tip. Thanks for the tips

I find that with a proper setting on the soldering station, I get better results from a large hoof on small parts than a small tip. I set it just a little above the solder’s melting point, get a tiny dot of solder on the iron to be a heat bridge, and then flow solder into the joint. However, I don’t do anything smaller than 0805s... stuff like SOIC and QFP devices are done with drag soldering. Also, magnification is essential (I’ve got a stereo microscope, but even a desk-mounted magnifying glass helps).

what about his signature curved conical tip?

Thankyou very much for uploading this informational video. 👍 (Mudy) Hoof tip is so commonly available over here. If we ask for a soldering iron over here shop keepers will give the hoof. And i have been using it for years it's so bad , no life, and it will damage the circuit board too. I have damaged many more by using this soldering iron. I would like to order pointed one.

I think there's some variant of the hoof tip that's great for drag soldering, has a little dent in it. I don't have one yet though.

60 watt soldering iron in use here. I find that the hoof form works best for desoldering DC jacks etc. The fine tip never seems to work out for me, not even when desoldering smd components. It just isn't able to transfer enough heat to melt the factory tin. Always have to use flux, then my own bought tin to touch it with so it starts melting. But never by itself.

hold the side of the conical tip to the pin and not vertically like a pen. Mr. solderfix has videos showing this
