Great video, great idea about forming the solder wire around the pipe, and heating just above to melt it. I was having the same problems as the guy before with the solder , but hopefully this has solved it, thanks for your help.

Good video. When I try soldering small stuff like steam pipes no matter how clean I get the work piece and even using flux applied first I never can get the solder to stick or go round the joint but bubbles off into small blob's of solder. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like either your components are contaminated or you are melting the solder but not warming the pipes sufficiently for the solder to flow into the joint. Try de-greasing your components with brake cleaner after cleaning with fine wire wool and before the flux is applied. then make sure you warm your pipe along with the solder. This engine had factory solder so I could heat from the piston side of the engine frame. If I'm fitting new pipes I have never successfully fed solder into a heated joint. I wrap fine solder around the pipe to the volume I want in the finished joint then apply heat starting with the pipe just above the solder. I have created some very tidy joints this way.

@@madasatrout1483 Thanks for the advice. Will try that and thinking maybe it's not enough heat and so just bubbles off but I try to hold it on a while but the other thing may be not clean enough.

I made a jig to be able to solder them in one go. What nuts are you referring to? Have you soldered bolts in the rivet holes?

Hi, It's some time since I made the video and I don't recall any reference to soldered nuts. The only nuts I soldered were those that secure boiler closing plate studs. Also some NnB engines were resembled with the engine frame secured with a screw made to look like a brass rivet. The nuts securing these screws were also soldered. When I have soldered TE1a engine steam pipes the pipes have been jigged with gaffa tape.

Hi have you a link to which mini blow torch you used I need to solder the steam pipe to the cylinders Can I put a ring of solder around the joint and heat that up

When fitting new pipes I wrap fine solder wire, to the amount of solder I want in the finished joint, around the end of the pipe or pipes and then solder as in the video. It's a chefs mini blow torch. Available from cook shops, eBay, Amazon etc

Hi Mark, I use brake caliper paint from eBay. I also use it in black for the fire and smoke box.
