We're on Confederate Avenue next to the Monument to Tennessee for some soldier accounts and stories.
Dr. Caroline Janney is the Director, John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History at the University of Virginia. You may recognize her from the History Channel's 2022 program about Abraham Lincoln.
This piece is part of our coverage of the 159th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. You can find all of the videos here: • 159th Anniversary of G...
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

My great , great grandfather George T. Wynn, served in the 24th Texas Cavalry and sent a number of letters home to his wife . They are still preserved in Foard, Texas in a small museum. He spoke about all the hardships the soldiers went through and then later on as POW's having been captured in Arkansas during the Vicksburg campaign. He died of pneumonia in the Federal Prison and along with hundreds of other confederates is buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. He left behind a widow, my great great grandmother, with two small children.

THAT was a fascinating glimpse into the past...I have really gotten into reading a lot of Civil War books written by soldiers, from both sides, about their experiences while at the battle. I think a lot of people thought that most of those soldiers were just "dumb hicks"(no offense) that werent all that smart. But after reading quite a few personal accounts some of their writing styles and descriptions are just "mind blowing". The used words and descriptions that we would never use or think of. I just love reading about "inside the ropes" details from actual participants. Thank you all for the great tour of Gettysburg, where i may never get a chance to visit.

Caroline, I think all military personnel think like confederate soldier. As for myself, I miss the danger and excitement. Sometimes it is down right boring. This is the best example I can come up with. Think about it like this, you have a job at the INDY 500 as a driver. You are going 250 mph in the straight away, banging tires, trying to get in and out of the pits as fast as you can. The next day you get a job parking cars. I think all soldiers feel this way, especially those who have seen combat. Maybe this helps you understand

There was an extra brigade, Mahone, that was resting in the shade of the trees on Seminary Ridge. Anderson the division commander refused to send in as support of Wright or Wilcox, who could have done great things with just a little help.
@crippledcrow2384
@crippledcrow2384 2 жыл бұрын
I've posted on another episode about Anderson and Mahone staying back in the woods and napping during the engagement of July 2nd. Wilcox men had used up almost all their Ammo and just destroyed the 1st Minnesota but had to retire because of no support from Anderson. Wright had it all the way to the crest of Cemetery Ridge but had to retreat because of no support when the Union was getting up a force for a counter attack. Both Wilcox and Anderson had to leave their captured artillery on the field because of no support. Anderson and Mahone were well liked by their superiors but I can see why Wilcox and Wright might want to argue that.

My 2X Great Grandfather and his brother were in Wilcox's Brigade who sent messengers back to Anderson to send reinforcements because they had just destroyed the 1st Minnesota who were the last Union troops to stop the Confederate troops from taking that part of the field. Wilcox men were almost out of ammo and dog tired. Anderson and Mahone were taking a nap during the engagement.

I never understood why either of them were so well thought of. Anderson seems like somebody that did just enough to keep his job.

@@louisdemoss6215 Anderson lead his troops from the Wilderness to Spotsylvania in time to head off Yankee cavalry from taking over the road there. That is his only outstanding achievement. Longstreet and Lee liked him. Lee liked Mahone too and all he did was lead some troops to retake the Crater at Petersburg.
@louisdemoss6215

@crippledcrow2384

1:41 I will tell you my view on Mahone was and what he and Anderson were up to on July 2. Mahone's Brigade was being protected by Anderson. The Brigade was made up of Virginians and they didn't like throwing Virginians into battle as long as they had others to use first. Mahone and Anderson were resting behind Seminary Ridge during the attack. Messengers were sent back to Anderson to request support during the attack. Wright and Wilcox both sent runners. Anderson, if he could be found, never sent either brigade any help. The attack fizzled out for lack of ammo and Union reinforcements coming in. Anderson not Hill was to blame for the failure on the 3rd Corps part. Hill was sick on June 30-July 2.
