Brian Kelly is just 5 years old, but he's developed a love for yard work, something he and his dad used to do together all the time. After his dad, an Air Force captain, was deployed, Brian had to find a new partner. Steve Hartman reports on the story's happy ending.

That boy will remember his neighbor and those good times for the rest of his life. Back in the late 60s, when I was 3 & 4 years old, we had a neighbor who would meet me at the unused dirt road that ran between our houses. Almost every day we would walk and pick up rusty old nails that we found there while we talked and he told me stories. It was one of my favorite things to do and I looked forward to it every day. It never dawned on me how there could be so many nails in that road. It wasn't until some years later that I found out that he would go out every day before our meeting time and scatter those nails in the road. We picked up the same nails every day for two years. That was 50 years ago and I still remember how I looked forward to our daily walk and remember many of the life lessons he taught.

Growing up I lived at my neighbors place. They still are my neighbors to this day. We would go there straight after school and help with house work, watch TV, talk. My parents would have to come across everyday after work to call us back for dinner. Which a lot of the time we had already eaten by their house. We were and are so tight with our neighbors that we have a gate between yards to allow us quick access. Have a good relationship with a neighbor is a priceless bond.

We had the same close relationship with our neighbors. Their Dad was funny, outgoing and a Navy pilot. My Dad was funny, generous and an Army officer. Their Dad had nicknames for some of us, we knew them that well. Now in my 60s, we’ve known them mostly through my parents staying in touch for our whole lives. They were like cousins to us.

Yes, and more importantly, such neighbors keep each other's kids safe. My sisters and I all "ran away from home" at least once each, and we headed for Eileen and Marvs. Make sure your kids have a safe place to run too when home is not right. I never had kids, but I told all my nieces and nephews that if they ever felt they had to run away they could run to me. I'd pay bus tickets, air fare, whatever, and then we'd work it out with their parents. They haven't taken me up on the offer yet (and I think both my sisters thought I was being a little weird) (oh, I cleared it with them first), but you never know.

Oh this just makes my heart smile after all these years. I am a proud daughter and mother of a Marine. I am also a proud wife of a Soldier. When my husband was deployed, my fatherinlaw asked for a Support your Troops magnet for his truck. He said his way of supporting the troops was doing his son's yard. He was such a sweet man. I am so thankful to all those who serve and the family and friends who support us in so many ways.💜🙏🏽🇬🇺🇺🇸
