The passing-out parade for the British Army's newest and youngest professional soldiers is a proud day for the men and women marching off the square.
Former soldier, now reporter, James Wharton knows this feeling personally, as almost 20 years ago he passed off the square at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate.
As 500 new Junior Soldiers graduated, he was able to revisit his old platoon lines and even spend some time in his old bed space.

I joined the army as a boy entrant when they were apprentice training schools when Harrogate trained mostly building trades but I went to Arborfield near Reading for three years then went on to serve ten years. There was a lot to remember about growing up there.

Brilliant work every one of you. Congratulations. I just wish I could've done the same thing. I've always wanted to at least go through basic training since I was in my early teens, but wasn't allowed or was discouraged by the military doctors a over two years ago, due to some small complications. I'm still young enough to sign up, but who knows what will happen of change in the years to come. Figures crossed I might be able to get into the Reserves someday. To all who were excepted though and have made it this far, I wish you all the very best of luck in your careers in the army.

I joined as an Army Apprentice in 1961 didn't enjoy Chepstow, but that, and other service experience set me up for life. I can still remember well our passing out parade in July 1964. I left the R. E. in 1973 as my plans and the Army's plans did not match. I serv ed a further 32 years in the civil service achieving a senior grade and now enjoy a nice pension. Thanks to Beachley. M J S. 61C. B coy.

Does anyone know why some of the junior soldiers have those red and black ranks on their arms? Also why did the junior paratrooper and rifleman go up to the general (I would assume to receive an award of some kind but I don't know what) Going to sign up for next year at Harrogate once I've finished year 11
@davecaddy513
@davecaddy513 2 жыл бұрын
Unless its changed from when I was at Harrogate the red and black stripes are junior soldier ranks, When they pass out and move to their units they loose the stripes and go back to being privates (or the equivalent)
