I cannot believe it, the oldest surviving film star in the world it's unthinkable, they cannot possibly not run her. "What about Olton Hall, she's static" Perhaps there were not railway enthusiasts of sufficient faith for Olton Hall

Lion, albeit as Thunderbolt, was one of my favourite trains as a kid. I would love to either see her in person or in running order. I would love to see a replica (especially as Thunderbolt)

There is a group on Facebook that's been in talks about building a replica of a Liverpool & Manchester Northumbrian Class 0-2-2, and a replica Lion has also come up as a possibility. Honestly, as new-build projects go, this seems on the surface to be one of the easier candidates due to her small size, relative simplicity of components, lack of space requirements for assembly, and thus lower cost. And it has the benefit of the real thing still technically being with us, thus allowing it to potentially serve as a reference for any information that cannot be gathered from other sources; i.e. if you can't find what the left-hand linkage on the valve gear is on any surviving plans, just ask the Liverpool Museum if you can crawl under her with a measuring tape (carefully, of course, and out of regular opening hours so as not to give Joe Public any silly ideas). As for health & safety concerns, beyond what would be covered by either a thorough restoration or replica the main counter-argument I see to any such concern would be the operating replicas of Rocket and Planet. If they can be run safely, why not a new-built Lion?

Replicas of early steamers do seem to benefit from their size and relative simplicity. On my side of the pond, quite a few 19th century locomotives have been replicated. The biggest issue I think with smaller size locomotives is probably the issue of utility, after all if they are too small to pull anything of consequence then it's hard to set up excursions. Of course, I suppose with something like Lion you'd want to replicate the original carriages she pulled anyhow which would alleviate the problem somewhat, and of course the larger North American loading gauge tends to introduce problems I don't really think British preservation runs into as much.

Meanwhile 15 entire years were spent in Denmark by the Danish railway museum to build a replica of an 1846 Sharp brothers 2-2-2 engine called Odin (Denmark's first ever steam engine). It's an impressive replica don't get me wrong, but considering the size, that's a very long construction period

Another benefit is the group looking at building Tiger/Lion replica built the Planet replica between 1986-1992 and operated it until 2016 so know what is needed. A few also operated Lion when it was still in steam in the 1980s. The tender would be identical to the one used on Planet and there is a lot of common parts between both replicas. A lot of the moulds from building Planet still exist so there wouldn't be a lot of additional patterns to make.

Don't know if this counts as a replica, but there have been several Gauge One live steam models of Lion made by Aster and other makers, both in prototypical and in the Titfield Thunderbolt guise. As for restoring the original engine to steam, I'm always of the opinion that a working locomotive is better than a stuffed and mounted keepsake that simply sits and deteriorates from lack of use, but ultimately that is up to the people who own her to decide With steam locos, the "ship of Theseus" concern about keeping everything original is almost a moot concern, as the very nature of a steam locomotive means that during the course of their lives components were replaced, rebuilt, or upgraded countless times in order to keep the engine in good running order, almost analogous to a living creature. There's practically nothing left of you from when you were an infant, all your cells have been replaced numerous times and your body has changed as you grew, but are you still the same person as that little infant? All signs point to yes, and I would argue the same for a steam locomotive, or a ship, or an old car, or anything else you'd care to go about restoring and operating.

judging by what ive read and herd on the grape vine ..sooner than you think !! from what ive been told money for it is already there and waiting for the word go ..personaly I think a replica would suffice giving the age of lion and like you said the amount of modifications needed to run would quite possibly spoil her completely ..pluss it would give us younger generation a chance to see one in action ...just ashame she's in there slowing gavering dust ....whos with me on a day to clean her ?

At the end, the commentary mentions that it is a tank engine. This is completely wrong, as it definitely has a tender attached to it. Nobody knows how much of this locomotive is original, as to run it on the main line, the boiler needs to be replaced every seven years.
@ChristheXelent
@ChristheXelent 4 жыл бұрын
In my research, one of the curators of the Planet replica, who is writing a book on Lion and has inspected the locomotive, explained there was no record of identifying the engine as 'Lion' in the 1920s. As the Mersey Docks owned other engines, he believes there could (albeit unlikely) have been a change in loco between the years 1870 and 1917. As for the tender, it is not the original, but a collaboration of former Furness Rly tenders in the 1930 restoration. If you listen carefully to the commentary, you'll find that I never confirmed 'Lion' as a tank engine. However, according to the curator referenced above, any engine swap would have likely been with a tank engine. Hence the implication is open to interpretation
