I’ve been to that shed/display last year with a birthday party and thought that this engine was beautiful (like most victorian engines).

I’ve seen this loco in person and Barrow Hill, and it’s a lovely little loco. The cab paint is crumbling and it might need a good clean, but it’s still nice. I’m somewhat slightly inclined to prefer the Midland Spinner, but 158A is none the less a solid survivor.

Always love a new Sole SLIPs. May I presume that a look at the Johnson "Spinner" Single will be coming soon, considering (if I recall correctly) that engine and this one are on display in the same museum?

It is rather a shame that other Midland engines could not be preserved, such as the Kirtley and Johnson designed 0-6-0 goods engines, despite a few Johnson Goods engines also making an appearance on Railway Roundabout. Or the unique 2501 and 2511 class Moguls built at the Schenectady Locomotive Works, but did not survive into the twenties due to their design being non-standard.

This is the latest 'Express Engine' according to F S Williams 'The Midland Railway - its Rise and Progress' 1878 (4th Edn, engraving p162). I'd love to see it run with a restored American Palace Car...one used to see several over the system in the 1960, grounded and heavily tarred.

Odd question, but given how old this engine is, and how the Hogwarts express supposedly started at the dawn of passenger steam railway in the UK (Ik its a harry potter comment on a train video), and supposedly has used the same locomotive through out its entire existence (converted to run on magic rather than coal naturally). Think that the actual Hogwarts Express locomotive looks more like this rather than Olton Hall (Hogwarts Castle, still a beautiful locomotive), Or would it be some kind of single or perhaps some other locomotive entirely?

To join the conversation a few years later, you’re right that the Hogwarts express would realistically look more like 158A. Oddly enough, the lore of Harry Potter states that the Hogwarts express was built in 1837, 100 years before Olton Hall. I just assume they swapped it out or modified it. I have the headcanon that (at the very least) the film version of the train is an entirely normal train running on normal coal, but with a charm that repels muggles from seeing it.
