R.I.P. Sir William McAlpine 1936-2018

The engine really suffered under Marchington's ownership. He took advantage of the engine having carried an A4 boiler since 1977 and increased the pressure to 250 psi. He also bored out the cylinders from 19 to 20 inches and made several other changes in an attempt to "improve" the engine. The Gresley A1/A3 frames simply weren't designed to deal with that kind of power output. It was already bad enough with the frames having to hold up the weight of the A4 boiler (A3 boilers were lighter). The engine was in the worse shape it's ever been in when the NRM bought it. Allegedly it was worse off mechanically than some engines you'd find in a scrap yard. The forward part of the frames were found irreparable and had to be replaced. Hopefully the work done to return the engine to its proper A3 specs and tip top running condition will negate the need for such drastic overhauls in the near future. The A3 boiler, built in the 1940s, was aquired from Salmon Trout during a 1965 overhaul at Darlington and used by 4472/60103 from 1965 to 1977. The A4 boiler was built around 1960 and bought by Alan Pegler as a spare around that time.

It's such a shame Scotsman was the only A3 to survive the cutter's torch, the last two survivors under BR; Spearmint and Prince Palatine would have been excellent machines in preservation. I suspect the A3s were very much overshadowed by the Streaks.

Yes. I admit. I've been wanting this to happen. For almost as long as SOLE SLIPs has been around. I laughed out lout at the Thomas and City of Truro references. This video helped me to clear up some confusion about Flying Scotsman. I hope someday I am able to see her myself.

This locomotive is no doubt the most famous steam locomotive of all-time! It should never, and I mean NEVER EVER be scrapped! She was the first ever locomotive to surf and navigate the globe. I would like to see her one day, but I live in the U.S. Maybe one day I will.

Ah, Flying Scotsman. I was hoping for a SLIP about her one day. It's safe to say that her fame has been both a blessing and a curse. It's a great shame she's the only A3 left. Papyrus defiantly should have been preserved, as she was the world's fastest non-streamlined steam locomotive. Singapore made the fastest run between Newcastle and King's Cross by a steam locomotive, Flying Fox had the highest mileage of the whole class, and was the longest lived, and yet they were all brutally executed. If only there had been a Barry scrapyard for LNER engines. Alas, there was not, and we can only be thankful that Flying Scotsman is still there for us. The world's most famous steam locomotive, and an important part in the story of Britain's railways.

When Flying Scotsman returned, you knew that you were going to do a Sole Slip on her and can I say job well done! ;)

As both a student of history and a raving railfan, The grace and importance of Flying scotsman is well worth the price tag, so to speak.

Great film. I was one of them who said it was a waste of money but seeing her on the main line and at the bluebell last week, it is great to see peoples smile and respect to our hobby caused by this loco. So for that reason she gets my respect.

I think the problem people have with Scotsman is we get the same documentary about it over and over again made by people who know very little about railways, while this on the other hand had some very lovely cinematography of the locomotive on the Bluebell and told me something new and makes me feel the opinion of an amateur historian with a passion is much more worth the money than a journalist or minor celebrity following the latest human interest story, this was a very nice surprise Chris, thank you!

I had an inkling that 60103 would get the 'SOLE SLIP' treatment sooner or later, and may I say, you've done that brilliantly as usual. To add my penny's worth... You either love or hate her (yes I know, a cheap Marmite gimmick!), but there's no denying that she is a genuine icon of 21st Century engineering. And I admire her for that fact, regardless of the controversy surrounding the last overhaul and the subsequent stick that she got for it. 4472 (as I first got to know her as a 9 year old at Llangollen, in 1993), like many people, was one reason I got into railways in the first place, and became a good part of my life. And I hope that will continue for a long time to come, especially since she continues to draw the crowds and hopefully get more of the younger generation involved in the world of railways... Top job as ever chief, a much deserved thumbs up!

The city of Truro was the first engine to hit 100 mph But the flying Scotsman was the first engine to hit 100 mph that was recorded.

Yes! I was wondering when you were going to do a video on Flying Scotsman, and now it's here. The waiting period has been worth it. That engine's had quite a history, and I'm definetly happy to see it running once more.

Yes she cost a lot.... but what a loco indeed! The crowds will have helped the heritage railways throughout the UK.... and lets not forget they have to buy food etc in these local towns (helping the economy!). Great job as ever, Chris. Keep up the good work :)

Flying Scotsman is significant, important, and well worth the money put into restoring it. Few locos have had such a good relationship with the general public outside of train nerds that we need it to help keep the hobby going. Scotsman has a claim to fame, and a long and interesting history. 100 years on, and it’s live a good life.

Excellent Sole SLIP Chris! I was looking forward to you making one about the Flying Scotsman and I'm glad you finally made it! At 6:36, if you're referring to the time when Flying Scotsman came to the United States and needed other American locomotives to tow it like from New Rochelle, NY to Harrison, NJ, that was actually with electric locomotives, not diesels. Penn Central GG1s were used to tow the Flying Scotsman on the section of the Northeast Corridor from New Rochelle, NY to Harrison, NJ because steam locomotives in steam are banned in Manhattan. I don't remember seeing or hearing anything about a diesel towing Flying Scotsman in the United States due to legal reasons, except for the GG1 electrics to get it through Manhattan in New York City.

Some people may say Scottie was a waist to restore, but that's not my opinion. Here in the states, we're restoring a locomotive that costed as much as Flying Scotsman's extensive overhaul to build (in modern currency). The engine in question is Big Boy 4014, and it's estimated 20 Million U.S. Dollars are to be put into restoring her, maybe even more now that they've got a better look at the damages. Now THAT, is a waist of money.

Scotsman is and always will be a spectacular puffer

It's truly a crime that Scotsman is the sole A3 to survive. With 79 of the class built and 6 A4's, 3 Duchess's and 10 Merchant Navy's surviving, there is no excuse for just one A3 to be left. More of these lovely machines deserved to be saved from the cutters torch. If we had 3 A3's, we could have Scotsman in Apple Green at the NRM alongside Mallard and Green Arrow, and one of her shedmates could run mainline tours.

My favourite Locomotive by far. I know that the streaks have a better reputation but Scotsman set the standard of speed at the time. It's truly a marvel to see it in action again. Though I'll say one thing, that might start the comment section: I think that Scotsman should have been painted BR Pacific Blue in 2016. Why you ask? because you barely see the livery and plus 60103 never had the livery so it could interesting to see, I know it sounds stupid but I honestly think that it would look nice on the girl Cheers Avi

Nice one Chris. I watched The Flying Scotsman arrive, traverse The Bluebell, and depart back to NRM. The number of views on KZfaq is testament to the popularity. I've seen crowds, and I've seen the attraction that this locomotive offers. Yes a chequered history, but you made it an interesting watch, with your usual research and wit thrown in. And in regards to its' Australian tour (as I found out from a person involed with it all), oringaly Aus Steam 88 wanted to have the Flying Scotsman in the first place but never thought they would ever get her, so ask asked for Mallard instead, and the rest is history!

I'm imagining a parallel universe where Scotsman was bought by the Strasburg railroad, who are probably the only place in the US that could maintain Scotsman.

I do prefer the apple green livery, I sa pose the is a represtation of Flying Scotsman in 1963 on its last days of service. Not keen on the German smoke Defectors.

Don't care what haters think, this locomotive always has been and always will be, my favourite locomotive of all time. As an American who got to ride behind this glorious locomotive when I was on holiday in England, I have never seen one locomotive get such a response. Every platform between Bristol and Taunton, plus seemingly half the fields up and down the line, were filled with people to see the locomotive. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Beyond that, consider yourself lucky to have mainline steam and be able to go see it at speed. The mainline railways over here, particularly in the eastern US, want nothing to do with letting steam run anymore. Seeing locomotives that are that gorgeous and of such historical importance is a gift

The fact that Flying Scotsman had to be fitted with a cowcatcher reminds me of the episode Thomas in Trouble

On my side of the pond, when a steam locomotive gets to her mandatory 1472 day inspection, that's it for the engine. Think of the few over here that survived a 1472 day and returned to service. Only Nickel Plate 2-8-4 765, Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 and the Union Pacific 4-8-4 844 ( notable for never being retired and donated or sold for scrap!) "survived" this regimen. That Scotsman has been able to survive the fiscal turmoil privately owned steam locomotives can get their owners into, c'mon Chris, admit that you're just not hot for her because she's such a cultural icon.

I think the people who say spending more than 1 million on a loco are out of touch. Dozens of exotic classic cars like Astons, Bentley’s, Ferrari’s and Lambo’s regularly change hands for much more than that, and their maintenance or full resto’s cost similar amounts. Obviously a car is much smaller than a steam engine, and those cars only do 50 miles a year with 1 - 2 people on board.

As for the cost of the Flying Scotsman's overhaul, 1,000,000 pounds doesn't sound all that much for the work that needed to be done. Here in the States, a regular 15 year (coincidentally enough also referred to as a 1472 day inspection) costs between $400,000 to $600,000 every time one of those is required.

Flying Scotsman has always been a favorite of mine. Coming from the land of the free and the home of the brave (yes, it's obviously America), I myself would like to fly over to England and get a ride on the Flying Scotsman's passenger train one day.

Minor error - the Sharpe Army Depot isn't in San Francisco, it's in Lathrop about 90mins or so outside of Sacramento, CA.

Such a beautiful locomotive. It’s a crime that she was the only A3 preserved. I love her in BR Brunswick Green with the double chimney and smoke deflectors even though shes was in LNER Apple Green in her pseudo-A1 configuration when I got to love her as a kid. As an East coast Scot I know I’m biased, but IMHO the LNER always has the most beautiful locomotives out of the big four.

City of truro got to 100 mph first but it wasnt pulling a dynometer car so it wasnt official. However the Flying Scotsman reached the speed pulling the special car, therefore making it offiacally the first engine to reach 100 mph.

Hi Chris. Another great episode but you may want to check your facts regarding Scotsman's record trip across Australia. In fact there was a previous Sydney-Perth transcontinental steam trip in 1970, behind ex-New South Wales C38 Pacific 3801. Other than this, a well-produced and edited episode - please keep up the good work.

The spare A3 boiler was bought by Alan Pegler in the 1960s. Alan Pegler bought that boiler for Flying Scotsman's overhaul in the future. Alan Pegler gave Scotsman's boiler to the people of the National Railway Museum because he wanted the people of the NRM to save Flying Scotsman from scrap if he could not afford to run the engine in service anymore.
