I’ve seen some comments talking about make-up brushes, remember… Dust doesn’t just magically disappear! It has to go somewhere… hence why vacuuming is the best method. Cleaning those brushes isn’t easy.

It really is easy to clean makeup brushes actually, just put them in the tube of a vacuum cleaner and it literally cleans them in a second

I use a makeup brush and a lint roller. I dust then *dabdabdabdabdab* on lint roller. Easy and been cheap.

I have a few other options: -An air spray canister (specifically designed to clear dust from nooks and crannies) -A regular feather duster -Keep all your Lego imprisoned in glass cages

Also a note for anyone with a weak HVAC system: investing in a whole-room air purifier can go a very very long way. I use Honeywell HPA300s near my lego and guitar stuff and it prevents the vast majority of dust accumulation

It's a never ending battle with dust and LEGO, my main method of fighting dust build up has always been make up brushes! They're cheap and easy to find, and have different sizes for the intricate parts of LEGO bricks. I also use air duster to get large amounts of dust off, though I am considering replacing this with an electric air duster, seeing as it would be way cheaper in the long run. Carpet is something I never considered using before, will definitely have to keep this in mind! 🥰

I second the use of make up brushes, the soft bristles are great for dusting around any delicate parts of a set.

Fine paint brushes work too (be careful, some can scratch your sets, choose softer ones)

Aren't you just brushing the dust on the floor? Does the brush actually pick up the dust? Bc if not, then like I said it's just going on the floor which will just end up back on the lego set.

My best advice is do not have carpet in your lego room. Wood floors and a cheap air purifier has lead to virtually no dust in that room!

I used hairspray one time in my bedroom. It’s crazy how much dirt stick to the surface after a tiny little spray. I use hairspray, deodorant, aftershave and all sprayable products away from my Lego. Also never put those spray airwick smells in your room with Lego. Using lighter solutions like plugins or candles are way better. Hope this tip helps!

microfiber cloths are really nice because instead of just moving dust, it picks it up which is super helpful.

The Dyson scratchless attachment is great. You don't actually need a Dyson though. I cut the tab off and bought a universal attachment to use it with any vacuum. Way better to get the dust up then just blow it around.

I have the head but can’t find any adapters to put it on my regular vacuum, where did you cut it? The universal adapter wouldn’t work with it even if I cut the Dyson only attachment part

I have a lot of dust… my house also has an older H-Vac system and since I’m a teenager I have no control over that situation. The thing I use most of the time is either a Swiffer cleaner or a Electronics Air cannon duster. They both work great!👍🏼

I couldn't help but laugh a little when you brought out the carpet sample, because when I was a kid, I used to rub my dusty loose bricks on carpet to clean them. It really is very effective. Nowadays, I just dust using makeup brushes of different sizes, along with an air purifier to minimize dust. One thing I'd like to mention about HVAC systems is having someone come out to clean the ducts (and have the system inspected to ensure it's running optimally) should also greatly reduce dust throughout one's home.

I didn’t try the carpet but I found that microfiber dust cloths work like a charm! The concept is similar and they’re much more malleable than the carpet piece. And you can just throw it in the washer.

$500 Dyson is ok but the $50 hose might not be worth it. Swifter works better and you can get soft attachments for ANY vacuum.

I'm a little sad because a few years ago I brushed out all the dust with a vacuum that left scratches. Now I have them in a closed space where few dust enters or completely disassembled.

I have tried a lot of methods with dusting my Lego builds. However a $20 rechargeable mini vacuum I found on Amazon has works the best. It has the soft bristles and enough suction to clean up the dust but not enough to pick up a 2x2 plate or tile. It does on occasion can pick up a loose 1x1. since the mini vac it has a small enough canister I can pick those out rather easily. I use the mini vac when I am exhibiting or at home.

An Airbrush works well as well. Do it outside as inside will just blow the dust around and it will settle on another Lego set. LOL! James 😁

Using those free carpet samples is a great and cheap idea! I love it! I personally have mostly used fuzzy-ish (I guess also polyester) blankets for dusting, however having a more rigid square piece of carpet makes dusting larger flat areas easier… Thanks for the great tips!

I bought a set of makeup brushes, I highly recommend it. Mine has five sizes, meaning I don’t have to take sets apart to clean them. Makes the sets look brand new

Swifter pads actually work really well. I use an air can duster for the more intricate parts.

So not only do I have dust problems but I get a lot of fur and some misplaced pieces because of my 4 cats. Luckily we’ve found ways to circumvent many problems but it’s still annoying (especially when building or placing stickers).

Mate I cannot stress enough how helpful this video has been! I bought a Dyson 6 months ago for regular household use, but I’ve been collecting Lego for almost 20 years. Given I was about 6 when I started, I never wanted to disturb any of the carefully placed battle scenes I made with my Lego, therefore many of them have NEVER been dusted. This attachment you’ve recommend has blown me away with how effective it is, and I can now dust away in peace 😍

Miniature war gamers have the same issues… I use a air purifier for the room every few days, Makeup brushes and a cloth to brush off and collect the particles once it’s “noticeable”.

As a very cheap/nearly free method, I've always used a feaher duster (real ostridge feathers work best) and dust vigorously in all directions. For more stuck on dust or a deeper clean, I use the cheap toothbrushes the dentist gives you for free after an appointment along with some soapy water & maybe some isopropyl alcohol (not on any printed or stickered parts though.) Hopefully our next house has better HVAC, I don't love how quick the dust accumulates.

PSA: If you use a vacuum make sure it is AIRTIGHT SEALED on top of a HEPA Filter. If you smell anything when you use your vacuum it's basically trash and making the air quality super unhealthy. Not enough people realize that bad smell from a vacuum means it is spraying dust particles everywhere, making the air quality nasty, and most likely somewhat dangerous(detrimental to your health) for several hours. Sadly you can't buy a vacuum that is good enough to have this feature for under $100 but once you get around >$110-120 USD some options appear, just be smart while shopping. Edit: I think the vacuum he used is good but extremely expensive as he mentioned

The best way to get rid of dust is to never enter the room or make a separate space. Reason: dust = dead skin, more human = more dust. So i'd just recommend putting a glass cover in front and on top of your racks. Also note that if you blow away the dust that dust will eventually settle again😅

My brother and I have actually used fuzzy blankets in the past, and that works well too. We have also used the carpet method but that was mainly if we were taking something apart or building it back together, we would just rub each piece in the carpet on the floor and then build it! 😂

I find a few paint brushes work just fine. Finer brushes get into the tiny areas and larger brushes clean the flat areas quite well.

Depends on if you live in a dusty area/road too. At my old house it was miserable, but now that we live between two lakes and have a nice HVAC we get way less dust as long as I keep the humidifier refilled with distilled water during winter

I use in one hand a small paintbrush with 'long' and bendy hair and I keep the hose of the vacuumcleaner in my other hand close to the brush. Works perfect, because I get in every small and tiny opening in a Lego set.

Like that you showed the Death Star as an example, that thing eats dust more than any other set I have and since it is so big it takes a while to clean. Will eventually probably pick up the Dyson at this point.

I just use a duster to dust my Lego sets. It works pretty well for what it does. Or I will use a wet cloth to do the job.

Paused this 5 minutes in as I had to look up HVAC. I’d heard of it, but didn’t know what it stood for. We don’t really have these in the UK. Most homes have central heating and that’s it. Something that keeps dust levels to a minimum sounds amazing!

I use a record brush. Relatively expensive but best, delicate brush that won’t scratch a thing. The trick being it doesn’t build up static, unlike many others. Takes some effort though.

i highly recommend if you don’t have a compressed to use this dumb sounding trick get a pc dust spray can and attach a small vacuum to it the dust flys into the air and the vacuum sucks it up

Dyson makes a good product but they have adopted an anti consumer repair policy just recently. Until the beginning of this year if your Dyson had issues once the warranty ran out you could buy parts to fix yourself or take to a 3rd party repair shop. Dyson has stopped selling parts to everyone period, if you need a belt for example, you now have to send your product back to the manufacturer and pay an exorbitant cost for even the simplest fix. Spending 500 for something that after the warranty runs out becomes a money pit in order for you to buy another is not a sound investment even remotely.

Dyson is like Apple of vacuum cleaners Luckily, any decent vacuum cleaner with a soft bristle attachment will handle this Lego dusting job just fine! I bought my no-brand brush nozzles for 5 euro (per piece) at our local hardware store 👍

@@user-op8fg3ny3j Yeah, as one can tell from the currency, I'm from Europe and the standard design of vacuums differs from US! Here most domestic models use wall power and roll along on their own wheels, whereas in the US and UK vacuums seem to be these "upright position" ones and often also cordless.

Love these ideas. We are invested to the Dyson system, so the dust attachment is consideration, but I have secondary smaller powered head, and spare carpet pieces from a floor.

Dust is the worst when it comes to collecting LEGO, I can never keep up with it. That Dyson vacuum would certainly help, although it is definitely not in my budget lol. Informative video, David, great as always!

There is an even more expensive thing - negative air pressure room - chip manufacturers like TSMC have negative air pressure in their factories so if even a single dust particle comes into the clean room it gets sucked up towards the ceiling where it goes through fine filters before being returned via the floor.

I like to make the city realistic as possible so i add weather when dust accumulation happens. Category 5 leaf blower hurricane storm does the trick perfectly👌

I usually use a brush which came with a dino dig kit which I got from a museum gift shop years ago. It's effective for cleaning other objects besides, and doesn't cost me a penny.

I’ve gone the nuclear option and used Clorox wipes with a combination of a toothbrush when it comes to non-stickered sets. The buildup on my 2014 star destroyer was clumped together at a point, and normal methods would not work to clear it. The Clorox disinfectant combined with a toothbrush really made it looks brand new.

The carpet sample method is ingenious. So far I am using normal dusting tools like vacuum cleaner and one off dusters. Most of the time it works well but I will give the carpet method a chance and compare the results!

If you are going to dust something with a brush, set up a little table outside and do it outdoors. If you are doing it inside, you haven't really removed any dust permanently, as it will just resettle onto something else.

Wow, the carpet is genius! I will try that myself, I think they offer samples of carpets in Norway. We don't really use the wall-to-wall carpets on our floor, we only have smaller carpets. But I am sure someone is selling that kind of carpets and offering samples. I actually use a make-up brush. Highly recommend it. I also use something called "Swiffer" I believe. It is a blue feather/ cloth that is amazing for dusting off. I dust my collection every week. It takes maybe 30 minutes as I do it so regularly. That way, the dust never gets time to set, and it is just loosely on top of the bricks.

When I worked at a home improvement store over the summer I would push carts and once I found one of those carpet samples in a cart so I took it home and what's great around that one is that the fibers in the carpet are more spaced out than the one in the video so I think I can get in tighter gaps with it.

The solution I've found was to put my Lego into a display cabinet. Minimises dust and gives a more professional look

i just keep my room clean and blow the dust off my table once in a while. it's gotten to the point where i only need to dust like once a month, very nice. as long as i maintain movement in the lego area of the room to disperse any dust particles floating around every few days and give a quick blow, it stays moderately clean with little effort.

I use a gel sponge such as Colour Coral or Cyber Clean. Has to be replaced from time to time but it works very well for the most part- gets between all the studs and leaves them pristine 👌

I’ve dunked them under the faucet without issue. Take off any sticker pieces first. Leave them on a dish rack to dry. Worked fine.

I used to have compressed air cans for computers and laptops.. but since I use those a lot professionally I decided to buy a electronic one, that runs of rechargeable battery to basically have infinite compressed air. And it works great on lego too! Just make sure you blow the dust away in another place, otherwise you just blow the dust particles in the air and they will land on the lego again the next day. I just do it on a balcony next to the room the lego is in.

Instead of replacing the HVAC system even older systems can get air duct cleaning. Doing this every 3-5 years will greatly minimize the amount of dust you seen in your home.
