I'm started to learn Freecad and I know that it should not compare to any paid licensed cad software. Funding is always problem in software like Gimp and Freecad. People who use these software should donate back something to them if they are using regularly and get income. This way we get more proper and good free software in future.

I have used Autodesk Inventor and solidworks before during university. I prefer Autodesk Inventor. However, when I graduated, I didn’t have the funding and do not want to pay the subscription fees for both of them. Therefore, I eventually go for FreeCad and found that is fantastic. Even though not comparable to the Inventor to some extent but it gets the job done. I am thinking of OpenSCAD in addition to that as it may give me more flexibility to create and manipulate the object and the text-based CAD can save my hand from mouse to keyboard.

@@himanshusingh5214 I just used OpenSCAD. I designed the complex singular part with FreeCAD and make the array of the exported model with OpenSCAD. 3D printing with OpenSCAD is much easier than with FreeCAD. The constraint-based design with FreeCAD is more intuitive. I would say that FreeCAD and OpenSCAD are not entirely in a "one versus one" situation. They can cooperate together to aid convenient design. There is even an OpenSCAD workbench in FreeCAD.

Freecad seems to not be very easy to work with but i think if you can get past the rough edges, open source CAD software is extremely powerful. -There is no "Business"-Version of FreeCAD which costs anything. Or did I misunderstand something in this video at 8:38? -FreeCAD also is parametric & history based but FreeCAD with its "Part" or "PartDesign"-Workbench is not a hybrid like Solidworks with part parametric and part direct modeling, but basic concepts of modeling are mostly the same. It's about $5k for a license, and they want to get you for a few $K/yr in "support and upgrades", however support is something that most competent people never use. Also, if you're running an older version, you're often stuck, because newer versions can open older versions, but not the other way around. Reading through the comments, I noted a compariy with Inkscape and Illustrator. The point I will make applies to all such comparisons. When talking open source vs closed commercial, you have to take into account that the social systems we live in are closed source biased. This is why: we are in a gaming system, seeking to collect tolkens for trading. This is the natural environment for closed source - commercial. If you had a different social paradigm that was the natural environment for open source (non gaming) - open source development would be crushing closed source. Social environment creates specific incentives and outcomes.

@@lucywucyyy They have a lot of work to do. They have a lot of silly features that aren't even remotely relevant to most target users. Blender had that problem too. This gives them a dropdown menu for toolbars so long it becomes a mess. FreeCAD is a mess, and seems to lack focus. When they fix that, as Blender eventually did, then it'll be good software. But first, the developers of it have to realize these things, and figure out who their target audience actually is. They should be focusing on the hobbyist community. No engineering firm or manufacturing company is going to replace their Solidworks or Inventor licenses with FreeCAD, but if they focused more on simply being a Fusion 360 alternative, it could be quite good. I have been working with CAD software as a professional for over 30 years. I have used many of the commercial products available. I can tell you that Solidworks is obsolete garbage. The drafting side of it has always been, and still is, terrible. It only functions with simple drawings. Any reasonably complex assembly and it goes turns to crap. The software is not multithreaded. Which means it only runs on a single core. My computer has 16 cores, so SW is only utilizing 1/16 of it's power. As such, it is still as slow as it was 20 years ago. Any company that is paying for it is getting seriously ripped off.

I've used Soldiworks and Creo for work. Although the latter is very hard to configure and more difficult to use, it turns out to work better when the model needs to be changed. With SW I could not manage to modify a simple assembly (two plastic shells) without mistakes, conflicting contraints etc. The best I've tried is Catia however

SW can't possible be as bad as FC. FC is the most buggy piece of software I've had the displeasure of using in my 35 years of computing. FC is free, I get that, but what good is free if literally every project I've ever attempted to create with it has been an abject failure due to bugs? As of today, I have abandoned yet another parametric, spreadsheet-based project because I cannot get it to render a specific feature correctly when updating a single spreadsheet value: constraints on a specific sketch that make use of the changed spreadsheet value break in ridiculously bad ways, depending on how many times I change the value: horizontal distance constraint from the origin to a vertex on the sketch moves itself to another vertex, or vertices from multiple line segments get fused together into a single line segment, or segments completely disappear from the sketch altogether. This is just one example of many that will have you hating FC if you try to do anything but the simplest of things. I always end up going back to Blender to create my models. It sucks, though, that Blender does not support parametric design.

Sure you can and you should. You might not get very favorable results for FreeCAD yet, but well, at least you get some idea of how far away you are from eventually reaching that version 1.0 These things are literally decades long projects, a lot of patience is needed.

You can. A great example. Blender and (the entire Autodesk 3D suite) Of course maya and blender have some differences and and some are better in some aspects than the other. And IMO blender is better to the point of having access to a full license I prefer using it (having learned 3D in maya) Another great example is photoshop and Krita. IMO photoshop is better but krita is very close. To the point that if I weren’t able to get a full license to photoshop I would use krita and not feel any real workflow difference. Free shit is getting better by the day. Solid works is still miles ahead of freecad. But in the future who knows how this will sway

I am a professional and I use FreeCAD. Nice, Hassel free way to get it installed on many computers without a license and simply boot it up an load work on any computer. I typically design fairly simple parts that are meant for function/ease of machining rather than aesthetic though and so SOLIDWORKS might be much better in that regard.

what do you mean, "there is no hard or easy software"? I don't know if you got started rambling and just weren't thinking about what you were actually saying, or if you spew out random nonsense because you think it sounds smart and profound, like Yoda. There are definitely hard softwares out there. Some are notoriously difficult, even for people who took the time to learn said software.

As a CAD user I find that SolidWorks and FreeCAD are two of the least intuitive, hardest to learn, CAD softwares. As you actually used Autodesk footage in your video Inventor is actually way easier to use. Not saying the previous two are bad but they are terrible to learn if you have other options like Inventor, Fusion360, and SolidEdge. The easiest CAD software I have used (even for 3d) is AutoCAD, of all CADs.. It is very easy to draw objects with it. The down side is that AutoCAD doesn't have all the mechanical features that SolidWorks and Inventor have.

I laugh in Pro|Engineer. The difficultmostest, heart breaking software in the universe. Never try to wing it. Nothing intuitive about it. You must read a complete book and watch many videos before getting the hang of how it works. But if you can persevere to the end, it becomes smooth sailing.

@@mclam5623 It still seems to be free for personal use? I've been trying both FreeCad and Fusion 360, but working with constrains in FreeCad feels quite clunky and if I want go back changing something in first object I've created it usually explodes everything attached to that object. So I donated some money for FreeCad and went on with Fusion 360. FreeCad doesn't seem to be getting much money so I don't expect it to evolve much in future.

@@finnderp9977 I'm not that far into freecad to see the hurdles yet. And Fusion = Autodesk = free until the most features are working properly and most of the bugs are solved. I'm using Autocad since v.13, and always the same story, some time for free, then paying. And there's the problem for me, I'm a hobbyists, I don't create spectacular things. I don't design tools, machinerys, vehicles, boots nor plains. So I can't afford it to pay that amount Autodesk asks. And I don't blame them, they have to make money, just not mine 😄

@@mclam5623 Yeah, well I've printed parts designed in FreeCad so its not limited in that way. It just takes more time, maybe few crashes and if you change design you probably need to repeat stuff several times. Or maybe there would been better way to do things but couldn't figure it out.
