Because of you, I learned how to do backpacking. Because of you, I was able to teach my 26 year old son about backpacking and the Appalachian Trail. Because of you, today he finished his section hike and made it to the NC border! (I was supposed to be there too but had to go home earlier this week from Unicoi Gap due to what turned out to be my second round of Covid. 😖 thank God he was negative and able to go back and finish! I’ll finish GA this year come heck or high water!)

Dixie! Without the " being slow and not getting up early " you would have just been another through hiker. My standard pace is 2.5 to 3 mph, but I stop All The Time to watch little critters or look at flowers. I get way too distracted to take pics though. But I guess that's ok too just to keep it in my head and heart like you did that first time at Springer Mt.

I'm so glad that you trusted your gut and stepped out on the Appalachian Trail and out of the more secure and profitable, mundane life of engineering, Dixie. You have done so much to help others to get out and enjoy wild nature with confidence, knowing about what to expect through your experiences growing from a brand-new hiker to a triple crowner, and beyond. Your cinematography and music choice are as inspirational as nature itself. Thank you!

Great “critter“ shots in this video. Your photo skills have certainly grown with you over the years. Really nice. And nice camera. Someday I’ll complete the triple crown of watching all three video series of the AT, PCT and CDT. And Camino de Santiago as a bonus. I have stayed up way too late way too many times watching your videos. I’m a “Dixie Groupie.” There, I said it. Be well and walk in beauty.

When you were at the Benton mackaye and Appalachian Trail cross trails you weren't 7 miles from where I used to live. The last waterfall you were at I have Camp there so many times I really lost count, you should have gotten up under that thing, it is cold!!! Thanks so much for taking me on this trip with you, I actually felt like I was there since I have been there a lot a whole lot. After you left that big waterfall when you got down at the bottom of the hill and cross the gravel road if you would have taken a right on that road that's the direction in which I lived, it's actually the long way to my house when you go that way. Thanks again for the Memories young lady I thoroughly enjoyed them. Right there where you were sitting for the sunset, as the crow flies was only a mile from my house where I could sit on my back deck and look directly at Springer Mountain. I so enjoy this, thanks again. I know you enjoyed it. I wrote this before I seen the very end. I only did not hiking one time while on the Appalachian Trail, I ran into a bear, he went one way I went the other and I never did a night hike again. Now that's the end.

So- I have been watching you for years. And love your channel. Also love to pick 3 or 4 folks hiking the AT, PCT, CDT every year to follow. I was watching a lady hiking the AT today who has previously mentioned as you have that there aren't a lot of women on the trail and how she would love to encourage more women to thru hike. Todays video, she ran into a girl scout troop doing a day hike on the AT. They asked if she had time to talk to them a minute about her journey. And she said no, that she had to keep moving if she was ever gonna get to Maine. I wish so much they had run into you. I can see it now.... "Can you talk to us a minute about your journey?" Dixie- "Sure" Stops, dumps pack, goes thru every item while telling them how she used to hike with her mom at their age and often thought about hiking a long trail before she knew what thru hiking was. Next- While you set up your tent and sleep system for them to hop in and lay down you tell them how it makes you feel alive and see and experience things that you can only find on trail. Then you realize that you might as well stay there and answer all their crazy questions while you make your supper, wishing that you had enough to share with all of them. Finally, as their leaders are trying to herd them up to finish their hike and get back on time. You tell them all that they can do anything in life, to stop and smell the flowers, to help the turtles across the trail, let the butterflies ride on their hats. That the world is there for the taking. You are a great inspiration That is all.

So many comments about what all you see when you’re hiking. The truth is, once you start hiking you see it without noticing at first that you’re seeing absolutely every tiny thing and then it hits you one day...”hey, I see every single tiny thing.” Great video. As time passed though, and this video demonstrates, I came to realize How exceptional you are at presenting the feel of it. The lucky among us never loose their sense of wonder. Slow? Nah, just taking in the beauty of the trail I'd say. Thanks for taking us along I've been watching since your AT hike. My son and I hike the portions near the Washington DC area. Virginia in particular. I kind of "hiked' in the US Army when I was younger, but that was different of course and not enjoyable. You, and that past experience rekindled it in me (more you on YT). Your videos made me appreciate the beauty of it, and the US Army gave me the mental and physical awareness/toughness. I'm 53 and my son is 18 and he and I are going to do some hikes this summer of course. His experience is hiking with me and with the Boy Scouts (He's an Eagle scout and now aged out). When I retire in about 2 years, I'd want to do the AT thru hike. I'd like him to come with me but school, work, and other stuff may make it hard for him.

I have been backpacking with the Lanshan 2 for about 3 years now. There are better ways to run the guy lines than the factory way and doing that makes it easier to get a good pitch. Putting a prop under the side guy outs really helps get that inner mesh out of your face. Lots of videos on KZfaq about it. Its not a perfect tent but it has never gotten me wet and I have been through some wicked summer storms in it. Thanks for the videos!

With the floppy bug netting inside the lanshan, if you find an obliging stick, preferably with a forked branch stump, around 1.5 to 2 feet long and prop up the side guy lines like a washing line, then that will really expand your head room. Or pull them up to a tree. You can mod the hooks that attach the net to the fly so there is less space in between. I also sleep diagonally. Congratulations on seeing Springer Mountain again! ⛰️

Hard to think I’ve been watching your videos for seven years. Your videos have been a constant source of peaceful nature. You don’t know me; but, I feel like I know you. You have shared so much of yourself, your sister, mom, boyfriend and dogs, over you videos and the years. There are quite a few of us out here. We laugh, cry and sing along with you, sharing your emotions. I still get all choked up when I see you swimming, with your pack on, the fast creek out west, on the PCT. We enjoy your vision of tiny critters, squeaky high voice, when you talk to them, along the way. I held my breath, then laughed out loud when you tooted on your harmonica, at the cougar. Thank you sooo much. May God be with you, love you, protect you and give you peace. Maybe some day we’ll meet, hiking on Ol’ Rocky Top Mountain, in East Tennessee, heh, heh…. Kentucky

I actually used the lanshan 2 for most of my through hike. I loved all the extra room. You can help with the sagging inner tent by using only one of the plastic clips and just the strap on the other connection. Also tying the side guidelines to high branches to pull out the material or using sticks on the ground to prop up the guy lines in between the tent and ground stake. Also, another helpful hint if anyone is still reading bring along two extra ground steaks for the vestibules it's a lot easier than trying to connect them properly to the vestibules guy lines.

I just can’t splurge $700 for a zpack douplex(19oz). That’s $37 per ounce compared to the ULF landshand (40.7 oz)at $3 an ounce approx.

What a ... wonderful tribute to the beginning of your jouney! You have impacted SO many lives, including mine with your channel and your adventures. This video was not only well made and edited but also shows the "magic" that happens when we follow our dreams and our hearts. Thank you Dixie. You are an inspiration to so many on so many levels. In peace - the Sandman (ask Sunny - he gave me the trail name. LOL)

You have absolutely inspired me to start backpacking! My wife and I are in our sixties, and I never thought she would go with me, so I was surprised the first time she said she would go. I was even more surprised when she outdid me on I our first outing! We are planning our next adventure now and I can’t wait to get out on the trail at Oil Creek State Park in Pennsylvania. I have watched every video you have posted and enjoy your videography, narration and insights. Thanks for all that you do to let us live vicariously through your videos.

Hey Frank, good to hear that you and your wife are going to do the Oil Creek State Park, I'm going to be a little farther downstream at Kennerdell, downstream on the Allegheny that is! Here's hoping you have good weather.

Wow! Thanks for that. I decided to thru hike the AT in 2015 and immediately came upon your videos. I watched you as you made your way to Mt. Katahdin and couldn't wait for your next one to come out. I did a successful thru in 2016 and felt like I was walking in your footsteps much of the time. Good luck in the future and keep putting out videos.

Brought a tear to my eye. You're such an artist with the stuff you capture out there in the wild. Glad you followed your heart, although engineering also sounds interesting to me. I'm technically a biologist but I love camping and hiking too. I just never take a video of the whole thing. Of the videos I do take, most of them are of the camp fire. lol

I love that you've been rocking this tent. It's been my "go to" for two years now. I've got other more expensive tents that are fine, I just like this budget tent more.

Absolutely LOVED this one. You have been such an inspiration to me. I have dealt with some chronic pain issues the last few years and have been unable to backpack, but I am on the mend and absolutely can't wait to get back on trail! Thank you so much for all you've done for me personally. I have a Lanshan 2 (not sure which model) but it's a PITA to pitch and I still have to do it probably five more times before I'm comfortable with it. But I'll get there!
