Always a pleasure watching you build. Pushing 80yrs now but you make want to give it a try. Grandfather died digging a waterwell by hand and Great Grandfather fell off the roof repairing shingles. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Yep . Finishers will always put an L-bolt right where a stud will go , In the middle of a garage door or an entry door or at a king/jack./cripple . Small builds like this , I'll mark the forms for placement .. On larger jobs , We just gotta accept it and they never get the bolts right standing close to plumb LOL Gotta put a nut on top and smack it within reason . Hopefully it won't shear off the edge of the slab . Liked the start . Spade run wild !!. Use a ship auger and it'll pull you through , Use a forstner and you'll get a cleaner hole . You are correct about pre-sheathing a wall on a sloped slab . Out of level , squared walls beget out of plumb walls . "I don't get it Big Dan " .. Though I have had to pre-sheathe walls on a sloping monolith . Had to use quantum physics and meltdown my brain stem to know what the cross number differential had to be . Worked , but not for the mathematically challenged LOL . One of my last jobs " My Swan Song " .. The finisher couldn't fathom why my forms were out of level for the garage . He pulled out a laser to show how stupid I was , All the amigo's laughed in unison . " Just pour the dang thing to the top edge and trust me , and BTW . those little things around are set to the plane of the finish . Please go no higher or lower than those . Capiche !! . .. Ha! . You said 92-5/8 " studs . . Did you start at the front of the garage and benchmark with 92-10" and end in the back taking into account the slope? Each individual stud reduction ?? .Hope so !! didn't hear you mention that and that is important , I'd still use H-clips . But that's just me I guess . Wall sheathing . That can be argued a thousand ways to Sunday Some local codes might dictate it be run on the horizontal , Some engineers call it out , Code say that 25% of the first and second floor walls be structurally sheathed and 40% of the first of three stories . Also OSB has little arrows that indicate the structural axis . Back in the days , Some guys would put a standing sheet on each end and run the next three as foamboard or celotex . Soon as they cut out a corner window . 75% of the shear is lost . LOOL . Wonder why this wall'd rack is going back and forth " Don't get it Big Dan ?" . I now generally horizontally sheathe , but not religiously . I get especially picky when breaching the floor band . The center of the sheet whenever possible is centered on rim joist . Ties lower walls to the uppers , Even if straps are in place .Rule of Thumb " If you can gather strength by doing something simple , Do it " .. I went to Home Depot and looked . " Oh Heck No " 10 grand for a box . So I built my 22x24 for $4,800 complete . Slab, garage door , French door , two double glazed , vinyl siding , Hardi fascia and soffit , Architectural shingles .. Took me 48 man hours .. Had I had 2 more guys helping it would have taken 200 man hours and 199 of it arguing LOL .. When I got struck down with stage 4 cancer , My neighbor behind me wanted to help me . Asked me if I could design and build him an addition .. Sure !! motivation , Come home from The Cancer Center , hop the fence and go to work until sunset . I went turbo and used every cost saving method I knew , But also made sure it was built like a tank. My work is world renowned !! . With free labor I tacked on a huge two car garage with a 560sq ft bonus room , Stone lower facade with Hardi-shake . Curved beams and columns . 1200 sq ft finished .. Total damage $25,000 ..LOL .. I told him you just got 200 grand for 25 . But he did keep me supplied with bologna sandwiches . Told him . I don't even build decks for 20 a ft !! ,, On my own garage . All my truck would carry was 12' 2x6. didn't want to ride down the road with 16' bouncing around , Too cheap to have it delivered , Plus I could hand pick and scatter the Depot with all the bananas and boat keels . and 14' are usually trash . I ran the math and wanted to get the maximum pitch and have a little triangle fall off when making the rafters . Came out to a 4.34/ 12 . Max everything out . Lowered the collar ties to produce a vault " Had this argument what a collar tie and a ceiling joist is with a inspector 35 years ago .. They can become both !! . Didn't want to buy 22' and have a lattice of 2x's . The back wall I ballooned framed . Whenever I can . I like to go bottom to top and avoid that hinge and better for wind . Though I have worked with others than I could push that wall in an out a 6" . Ha! . Run a brace to the ridge to the top plate . I am a pest . I am not a carpenter anymore , Washed up " Used to Could " and to some degree live vicariously through vids like this .. I enjoyed it . I spent years building monster homes in gated communities , I reasoned " Why an I doing this. Too many pages of prints , Too big and takes 3/4 a year to frame , Too much detail and 7-8 carpenters to lead and hold hands . When I could build closer to the ground and the only fear I have is . Stepping on the owner's petunias . Peace . Enjoys

Doing a solo build 24x40 shop. No longer than 10 foot sections of framing so I can handle it myself. Not a carpenter by any stretch of the imagination, learning as I am going. We have been getting brutal heat the last few weeks so I get a few hours in the morning and a couple hours after the sun goes behind the hills, probably averaging 4 hours per day and it looks like I will have approximatly 60 hours just in the framing. Can't wait to get to the sheathing part of it. Not bad for a man with little carpentry skills I guess. Lots of reading and KZfaq videos have helped. The one thing I found is there is more then one way to do much of this. Hoping to have it ready for Roof Trusses that will be showing up in 2 weeks. Just so they can put them up on the top rails with their crane so I don't need to struggle getting them up myself.

@MyDIYAdventures thank you sir. Funny thing is. I do my corners exactly like you do. Window openings I found really slow me down, over an hour for one 8 foot section with a single 36x36 window. I found if I assemble them separate with double kings, Jack's and the header, it makes it pretty easy to place it where I want it. Always try to use one of the kings in a main stud position to kill 2 birds with one stone, then add my cripples after I place it in the framing. I use double kings just to add a bit of extra strength, code does not require it here. One 40 foot wall left. This one Will get 2 windows(already built, just need placed), exterior door, and a single 9x7 garage door. Supposed to cool down the next few days, so I should be able to make a bit of headway, I hope.

Always like watching your builds, can you show and explain how you square the building before you start framing and show how you snap the chalk lines on the floor after you square it?
@MyDIYAdventures
@MyDIYAdventures 2 ай бұрын
I just pull measurements from corner to corner to check square. Most of the time they’re within an inch of square, so I just follow the edge of the slab…no need to snap lines then.

Morning! If I'm doing 2x4 walls on 4x8x16 CMU blocks, should I be running a 2x6 frame on the garage, and then 2x6 inside framing as well? Hope that makes sense! Watching a ton of your videos to get a handle on my own garage build. Thanks!

When installing the sill plates do you inset them 1/2” from the edge of the slab so the sheathing ends up flush with the slab? Or does sill plate sit flush with slab and sheathing hangs over 1/2”? Not sure how I should do it and wanna get it right

If only the corners were getting OSB, then yes, but since the whole wall has it, it doesn’t matter.

Im building a 18w x24L garage and am trying to decide on door size ...some of my research has some people saying a 16w door on a 18w garage can be week/flimsy and recomend going with a single door whats your opinion on this ? Can it be tuff to get a 16w door to work well with a 18w garage? (10 foot walls) if that matters
@MyDIYAdventures
@MyDIYAdventures 2 ай бұрын
With only 2’ of framing on either side of the door, it doesn’t have a lot of shear strength…but we build them that way all the time. Just make sure your sheathing spans the side wall and onto the header in one piece, don’t piece it in.
@rsmith2786

What method do you use to determine your ridge height?
@MyDIYAdventures
@MyDIYAdventures 2 ай бұрын
I figure the height as determined by roof pitch, in this case 54” (9’ x 6/12 pitch) then subtract for the ridge and birds mouth (usually 4”). So on this one I put my ridge props at about 49-50 inches.
@Whistlin10Speed
@Whistlin10Speed 2 ай бұрын
