Join me on a Solo bushcraft camp.
On this trip I choose 4 items of camping gear to take with me winter camping.
I build a natural shelter, and cook wild game over the fire.
This was a fun test of my winter camping skills, and a fun bushcraft overnighter.

When you go far into the forest, when your phone is silent, it does not catch the signal, and the sleeping bag on the foam replaces your favorite bed! When your dinner is boiling in a black pot on a hot fire, and all your clothes are soaked through with smoke. You forget about all your problems, they simply do not exist, there is you and the silence of the forest! The silence from which is muffling. Your senses sharpen as you hear the wind, the rustle of grass, and leaves. The creaking of the trunks. At this moment, you feel that you are alive, you are alive now, you listen to your breath, your heart, Nothing can replace these feelings. You are cleansed of all that weighed on you yesterday. Just you and nature. And you're on your own. You're alive now, and that's all that matters. For this we go to the forest. To experience it, over and over again. Those who have experienced it will understand. Those who have not experienced it, still have everything ahead of them. Thank you for giving me this feeling. Thank you for making such content that attracts people to put on a backpack and go to wander along the forest path, your work makes people really happy. 👍

He'll be the first to admit, the key is not to spend more time hitting your flint but to spend that time accumulating better wood chips, bark or anything flammable. (Learned the hard way, by doing it for 20 minutes and then, going out, getting dried grass and cutting small pieces of wood, prepping slightly larger, and slightly larger - caught immediately and fire was roaring in 3minutes - FML. lol live and learn)

This is why you have the fire steel...AND fireproof matches...AND a Bic lighter...AND a small windproof butane torch that could start a fire even when things are wet. Good to travel light, but not smart to go into a survival situation with just the fire steel. You spent way too much time struggling to start a fire when you could have started it with a butane torch and some tinder that you brought. Increase your pack's weight by 3 ounces, save 30 minutes of hard work.

I love that you explain what you are doing unlike a lot of other bushcraft channels. You also include your mistakes. For the longest time I thought I was bad at bush craft bc I would always mess up when I was building a shelter but the only reason I thought I wasn’t good it bc I saw these guys making shelters on youtube and never messing up mostly bc they edited everything out.

I like the ‘pulled a Joe’ incidents...makes me feel better, since I have a massive list of bonehead moves of my own...like the time a spark popped out of my fire and landed on my topo map...or the time I set my fire starting kit on the car roof to adjust the pack job in the trunk and drove off without putting it in...or the time my friend and I misread the map on the north rim of the Grand Canyon and committed to a trail that was 10 times longer than we thought because we somehow missed the decimal...the list goes on. It's wonderful to be with you again. Winter bushcraft is one of my favorites. Even though we live in a more congested area than you (Aspen/Marble, Colorado) there are still areas that are free of arrogant, rude, people glamping on top of you. To prove that point, my daughter went, semi-rough camping with her 5 kids plus one, with nothing more than sleeping bags and a believe a tarp. We always go to the free camping as we've always referred to it. It just means, find a beautiful spot with a great view of the peaks and stay back a ways from the creek or any water supply. They left at midnight Friday (3rd) and aren't back yet (6th, Labor Day). I raised all three of my children and the older grandchildren how to take care of yourself in the woods. My daughter took to it more than the 2 boys. All the grandkids love it also. Our family has not visited a paid campground since we took our in-laws from Los Angeles. They sent instructions that they'd require a shower, a tent large enough to separate the girls from the boys with a tent with 2 vestibule and two sleeping ares. Nice clean grills for cooking, oh, and flush toilets stocked with only Charmin T.P. You get the picture. I went to J.C. Penny's and bought a 20' x 10' canvas wall tent. I slept outside on the ground. Sorry for always bringing the conversation around to my experiences but you're always doing what I've done at some time in my 75 years. But, Joe, that's what you do, you stimulate my great memories and then take me (as I've said, I'm an invalid since 2014) with you on these great trips. I appreciate that soooooooo much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Tom Shields, P.S. I have one story that I half to share. (I'm sorry) I'm camping on one of the only flat spots between the switch backs in that are on this huge flat topped mountain (10,800') So even though I'm occupying this select flat area, there are maybe 50 or more places to camp. I'm by myself and I have my nice evening fire going and a 300 foot motor pulls in and puts the levelers down and then I hear the football game going on inside. (The Los Angeles Rams and and some eastern team) They have it loud and they are all yelling at the T.V. Well I got out my AR-15 and shot everyone. No, I would never, ever do that. I broke camp and moved to the next flat area further up the mountain. But I lost my water source. By the way, California plates on that big boy. Did I tell you that it was 700 feet long. G'day mate

We hiked, camped, and fly fished all over these NC mountains. Dogs don’t live long but they make up for it because they live life daily. They don’t care about yesterday or tomorrow. Just livin in the moment. We have a lot to learn from them.

Why does this video get 4.5 thousand thumbs down? What were people expecting? A lady Gaga video or something. I mean, why come to this video if you don't want to see what is clearly stated in the topic of the video. I found it amazing. 2 weeks ago, we had record cold blast here in Texas and half the state was in a deep freeze and 45% of the state was without electricity and water. I live in Central Texas, Killeen, and it got down to -2. I was fortunate and didn't lose any power or water, but I thought that was brutal. Of course, last summer, we had over 100 days of over 100 degree temperatures. It's brutally hot here, but I take the heat better than he cold. I couldn't imagine surviving in this bitter cold.

Another awesome video. I sprayed my cheap Spyder gloves with Scotchgard so they don't get as soaking wet when I am at my bug out camp in snowy Vermont. It's same thing you can treat your shoes with to keep them clean and water resistant. It worked wonders. No issues with cold wet gloves anymore.

Fun... Almost like a blooper reel. LOL! A few thoughts: 1. Always boil the remains of the carcass for extra nutrition. 2. You would have been better off keeping the fire going all night... the bone broth at the ready to help keep you hydrated and nourished, the fire to keep you warm, abd to help keep any wildlife at bay. 3. Alcohol makes you FEEL warmer and more relaxed, but dilates your blood vessels, causing you to lose body heat faster, and impairing judgment, which makes it a danger in a survival situation. Cheers. brother. SEMPER FI -Caprice Fowler, EMT- PS- So sorry about Scout and Tripper. I feel your heartbreak, brother.

The forest beckons us, fills our thoughts. You can't stay at home anymore! You literally rip your jacket and backpack off the rack. You go on a journey where there are no people, and nature is especially beautiful. The smell of last year's wet needles and leaves is carried by warm air, which permeates you with a strong stream. You cannot get enough of it. The forest accepts us as we are. We are his guests, not his hosts. And we are grateful to him. How can it be boring for someone in this world to look at a drawing of veins on a green leaf for several hours?

Joe, a little trick I learned with the Ferro rod, I'll take the back of my knife and will carefully (very slowly) scrape off a little pile of magnesium (or what ever it's made of) then place that in my tinder bundle. Once you strike your Ferro rod a time or two, it finds that pile and instantly catches everything in fire. When it burns, It kind of looks like you just lit a little pile of gun powder on fire. Try it sometime and let me know what you think about it. One thing to remember though, rotate your rod as you're scraping it, so you don't wear down an uneven spot on your rod. Hope it helps buddy!

You know what else works fantastic? Lithium metal you can remove it from cheap dollar store batteries. I keep mine in a small glass vial in my waterproof case. Throw a couple tiny bits in your kindling and ferro rod/ ignite it. Roaring flames in half a minute. And you can make a very small amount go a long ways. Highly economical and reliable for when conditions are wet or snowy. Warning: wear protective equipment if you open batteries, chemicals used in their construction are poisonous and highly corrosive. Be careful

Flint and steel works better when the steel is magnesium and you don't need to find rocks. Also, if you forgot to thaw your frozen rabbit, cook it in small pieces on a stick (much faster), instead of the whole thing over a spit. Still, an interesting video, because things will happen and you need to adjust.

It's inspiring to see your patient attitude toward Nature, Joe. You take everything in your stride, whether easily acquired, or the type of task which provides that greater challenge. It pays testament to both your respect for the elements, plus your gentle presence upon the land. I live in the UK and rarely see such extreme weather conditions, let alone sleep out in it. One fascinating aspect is your creativity when faced with seemingly few items for survival. Keep 'em comin', Joe. Great videos. Hugs to Scout. Got huge respect for you, Joe. Looking like a rookie there Joe! Several options for tripod starting with forked poles or even forked sticks to put in the ground to suspend rabbit across the fire. Could also lean pole against a tree and place firepole across it. Do this to both sides of the pole. Even with all the mistakes, the video is still interesting because it shows that even with experienced campers things can still go wrong. Keep up the great work. Two large garbage bags would have served you well as ground cover/keeping in body heat.

So long as it's not near the evening, and you'll be working (warming yourself up), there shouldn't be too much of a problem with eating snow when that's all you immediately have available.
